Elementary Catholic School Principal Candidates
The Archdiocese of Hartford is seeking committed, energetic,
visionary principal candidates interested in leading Catholic
elementary education into the future. Successful candidates will
possess at a minimum the following qualifications: Practicing
Catholic in good standing with the Roman Catholic Church;
Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college/university;
Five years successful teaching and/or administrative experience.
Interested candidates should contact Deputy Superintendent
Our Lenten practice this year calls us to rejoice in God who is rich in mercy. Pope Francis, asks that the whole Church throughout the world, including Hartford, unite on March 4-5 to pray and seek mercy for us and the world. This worldwide act of prayer is called “24 Hours for the
Lord.” Beginning at 5:00 on Friday, March 4th and continuing until 5:00 on Saturday, March 5th there will be exposition and adoration of the Eu-charist and the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation through-out the world.
In the Archdiocese of Hartford this will take place at three parishes: St. Peter Claver in West Hartford, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Hamden, and St. John’s in Watertown.
Everyone is invited to come to one of these parishes to pray and unite with the whole world in seeking God’s mercy.
This is a time, as Pope Francis writes, “to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives.” May we all continue to be transformed by mercy.
Thank you for sharing your gift of treasure with our parish!
Peter, James, and John wanted to build a “booth” for Jesus and
just stay on the mountain where His transfiguration took place.
But the Son of God, the Chosen One, knew that He must instead
keep moving toward His Crucifixion. We, too, must rise from
worship and do what we can to hasten the coming of the Kingdom.

(Here are some thoughts from last week’s Lenten homily)
About 25 years ago, when the AIDS epidemic was at its
height and basketball player Magic Johnson acknowledged that
he was HIV+, a quiet, powerful story was unfolding in a small
Catholic parish in Brooklyn, NY. Many of the young adults in
the parish were dying from the disease with little support in their
final days and funerals. After bringing their plight to prayer, the
pastor called the church community to walk with those who
were dying too young and alone. He decided to merge the funer-
al liturgies with the weekday Masses, inviting parishioners to
come together in prayer and presence to commend their brothers
and sisters to the Lord. When many families of those with AIDS
were struggling to accept their loved ones amidst the stigma of
the time, a community of Christians stepped forward to offer
their support. It so changed the spirituality of the parish - open-
ing them up to a deeper sense of God and broadening their com-
munal mission - that they were renewed in a profound way.
They were in the desert of illness, death and shame but together
found abundant life and God’s healing hope. And it all started
with the simple act of worshipping in solidarity and selfless care
for the ailing and dying of Christ.
It’s not easy acknowledging the desert places in our lives.
They’re challenging and filled with uncertainty and fear. We’re
not sure how to make our way through them especially if we
know deep down that we need to spend time there to meet the
demons and temptations that are part of who we’ve been or
where we are. But we have stories of faith that can strengthen
us for the trek through the rough places as we learn about God
and who we can be in the honest search of Lent.
Of the many lessons in the history of Israel found in the Old
Testament, perhaps none are more meaningful than the ones
which grew out of their 40-year desert journey on the way to the
promised land. They could have taken a more direct route; in-
stead the long walk of faith helped them learn how to love God
and tend to each other, even the strangers they met on the way.
When they finally did arrive at the land of milk and honey, Mo-
ses told them not to forget their walk in the wilderness, how
they became a people forged in heat and help, prayers and care.
Their basket offerings to Yahweh would be filled with the fruit
of their hands and their spirits, blessings and challenges, grace
and struggle. These were baskets from their lives trying to be
covenant people, and they were deep and plentiful, made from
desert memories.
Jesus tapped into those memories when he went into the de-
sert dripping from his baptism and determined to understand
what it meant that he was God’s beloved Son. His own 40-day
exodus was a time of fasting and searching, finding and refusing
as the tempter came from around the bush prodding him to get
all he would need in an instant. But Jesus would have no part of
cheap food that doesn’t feed the spirit, power that fails to serve,
and a life disconnected from God through others. His would be a
slow, deliberate ministry of sacrificial love, a basket filled with
words of inclusion and acts of close healing and wide compas-
sion. It would start in the desert and end at the cross, showing
us that the tempter cannot counter baskets formed from within
as we move in and out of the deserts nearby.
Prayer of Abandonment Father,
I abandon myself into your hands;
do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do, I thank you:
I am ready for all, I accept all.
Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures.
I wish no more than this, O Lord.
Into your hands I commend my soul;
I offer it to you With all the love of my heart,
For I love you, Lord,
And so need to give myself,
To surrender myself into your hands,
Without reserve,
And with boundless confidence,
For you are my Father.
