Second Sunday of Easter (or Sunday of Divine Mercy)

April 23, 2017 “Blessed are those who have not seen

and have believed.” — John 20:29b A SEASON OF JOY “They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42). This first line of today’s first reading sets the tone as this fifty-day celebration of Easter opens before us. Today we listen to the teachings of three apostles—

Luke, Peter, and John—who remind us that even though we have not seen Christ, we nonetheless are filled with joy as we place our belief in his saving death and resurrection. Each week during the Easter season we will gather as a community of faith to find strength and support from our God and from one another. Each week we will gather to break bread and offer the great prayer of thanksgiving, actions that will manifest the very presence of the risen Christ in our midst. Let us be open to the wonders of this season of joy.

Second Sunday of Easter Page 4

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY! Dear Parishioners, Happy Easter Season !! Hope you had a great and wonderful Easter and the unique experience of the Holy Week liturgy, which for all reasons is spiritually empowering and elevating. It was so good to see so many people crowding the church at different services. May the Peace and Joy of the Risen Christ be always with you. The second Sunday of Easter was chosen to celebrate the feast of Divine Mercy because the gospel of the day speaks of God`s infinite Mercy imparted through the forgiveness of sins through the instrumentality of the

apostles who were given the authority to forgive sins in God`s name. This feast has also the origin when in 1931 Jesus appeared to Saint Faustina Kowalska of Poland, a catholic nun, in a vision she saw Jesus clothed in a white garment with His right hand raised in blessing. His left hand was touching the area of His heart from where two large rays came forth: One red and the other pale. The two rays denote blood and water. The pale stands for water of baptism which makes souls righteous and the red ray stands for blood which is the life of souls. Those two rays issued forth from the depths of His tender Mercy when His agonized heart was opened by a lance on the cross. She was asked to paint the image with the signature "Jesus, I trust in You". By means of this image Jesus promised to grant many graces to souls. This is the historical background of this feast. On April 30, 2000; the pope John Paul II declared the Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. May the Divine Mercy of Jesus be experienced by all who seek it. Alleluia and Thanks be to God for His infinite Mercy !!! Fr Innocent Subiza Parochial Administrator ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
