Sayings of the Church Fathers
H ow many myriads there are of evil demons and how numberless are their
varied wiles! They urge us to speak evil of one another, or, speaking sweet
words, to conceal bitterness in our hearts, to criticize the outer aspect of our
brother, while we harbor a wild beast in ourselves, to quarrel among ourselves and op-
pose one another, wishing to have our own way and appear as the most upright. Every
man who enjoys sinful thoughts falls willingly when he welcomes (as in sympathy with)
the suggestions of the enemies and when he expects to justify himself solely by his visible
deeds, while within he is the abode of the spirit of wickedness, who teaches him every
evil. The body of such a man will be full of shameful uncleanness - for he becomes a prey
to devilish passions, which he does not repulse from himself. Demons are not visible bod-
ies, but we become their bodies when our souls accept dark thoughts from them. For,
having accepted these thoughts, we accept the demons themselves and make them bodily
manifest.
It is known that the body has three kinds of carnal movements. The first is a natural
movement, inherent in it, which does not produce anything (sinful, burdening the con-
science) without the consent of the soul and merely lets it be known that it exists in the
body. The second kind of movement in the body is produced by too abundant food and
drink, when the resulting heat in the blood stimulates the body to fight against the soul
and urges it towards impure lusts. Wherefore the Apostle says: "be not drunk with wine,
wherein is excess" (Ephesians 5:18). In the same way the Lord commands His disciples in
the Gospels: "take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with
surfeiting, and drunkenness" (Luke 21:34). And those who are monks, and are zealous to
achieve the full measure of sanctity and purity, should take particular care always to keep
themselves such that they can say with the Apostle, "I keep under my body, and bring it
into subjection" (1 Corinthians 9:27). The third movement comes from the evil spirits, who
thus tempt us out of envy and try to weaken those who have found purity (who are al-
ready monks), or to lead astray from the path those who wish to enter into the door of
purity (that is, those who are as yet on the threshold of monkhood). However, if a man
arms himself with patience and an unswerving faithfulness to the commandments of God,
the Holy Spirit will teach his mind how to purify his soul and body from such movements.

To the parents of our young children
may we suggest…
Relax! God put the wiggle in children;
don’t feel you have to suppress it in
God’s house. But do prevent them from
kicking people in the pews.
Sit towards the front where it is easier to
see and hear.
Quietly explain the parts of the Liturgy
to your children.
Sing the hymns, pray and voice the re-
sponses. Children learn liturgical
behaviours by copying you.
If you need to leave Liturgy with your
child, please feel free to do so, but
please come back. You can also take
advantage of the “cry room”.
Remember that the way we welcome
children in church directly affects the
way they respond to Church, to God and
to Christ. Let them know that they are
at home in this sacred space.
We love pew art! Please use the blank
papers and colouring sheets provided in
the “cry room” (not pew envelopes) for
your child to draw us some
beautiful art. We can hang them on our
parish bulletin boards for all to enjoy.
Do your best to attend Liturgy on time.
In fact we’d love it if you would come up
to the priests before service and give
them a “high five”. When kids know the
priest they feel more
comfortable.
To the members of our parish…
A smile of encouragement is always
welcome to parents with small, active
children.
MASSIVE CHURCH CLEAN-UP - DON’T FORGET!!
On July 4 - 8, 2016, we will be cleaning out all the corners, cupboards, closets and storage rooms in the whole church.
We ask all groups and Individuals to:
Clean up your stuff in the whole building prior to this date. (Make sure you can access all your gear, equipment, paper, binders, files etc. by booking the room and time you will be in to clean with the Office Administrator)
Get a pink “cleaned & sorted” paper from the main office, fill it out, and tape it on all the stuff you have cleaned up and want to keep.
Things without a pink “cleaned & sorted” paper attached to them will be assumed abandoned or for general church use. These non-labeled items will then be gone through and dealt with as the cleaners / organizers see fit.
We may ask you (your organization/ministry) to move your stuff to a particular area to keep things orderly. (For example: Sunday School stuff should be together in the Class Rooms, Knights stuff in the Knight’s storage area, Choir stuff in the choir loft, etc…)
Thanks for your cooperation!

I ’m writing this reflection piece on a Saturday night, as one of the
many loose ends to tie up before leaving on my appointed sabbatical.
(Actually, I gotta lot of loose ends—more than I anticipated. So many papers!
And boxes of KraftD and Girl Guide cookies! But I digress.) When I looked
at the calendar some time ago, I realized July 1st (official start date of sabbati-
cal) is so close to Sunday, July 3rd, that it seemed best to look forward to cel-
ebrating services, preaching, and seeing everyone one last time, as opposed to
quietly “sneaking out the door” on the previous Friday.
That’s because there is an almost unspeakable beauty and dignity when we
stand before the altar of God in the Divine Liturgy—me, as His unworthy
priest, and you, as the priesthood of all believers.
Thank you to many for this incredible opportunity and life-changing experi-
ence of eleven months’ planned sabbatical. I will be back June 1st 2017.
My website blog will have all the latest news and pictures. Check out

My cellphone will be off for the most part; please consider refraining from tex-
ting or calling after August 24th as I will be either in retreat at Combermere, or
on the road, or in San Francisco, or finally in Rome and Ukraine.
