My Dear Parishioners

These are the blessed days when we have the most hours of daylight The dark days of the winter season have slowly given way through Spring to the promise of Summer While the weather this past Spring has been exceptionally delightful lately I do not have to comment on how very unsettling and challenging it has been as we continue to navi-gate our way thru this awful pandemic Thanks be to God we seem to be going in the right direction

In my letter this week I want to be a witness to how the Light is being manifest here at St Rochrsquos My thoughts immediately turn to the first of two Confirmation ceremonies that we will celebrate at the 11 orsquoclock Mass this weekend I consider it a great honor have been delegated to confer this Sacrament on some very fine young men and women whom I have gotten to know over the last two years as they have prepared to take this step Confirming a decision that their parents made for them to be baptized

On that all important day of their Baptism bringing them into the Body of Christ the Church they were given a candle lit from the great Easter Candle and this prayer was said ldquoYou are now a Child of the Light Keep the flame of faith burning brightly so that when the Lord comes to call you home you will be able to follow Him into Everlasting Liferdquo Getting to heaven is our ultimate destiny There are a lot of dark forces in our world that want to extinguish the Light of Christ within us and the consequences could not be any more serious

It is the grace of God through the guidance of the Holy Spirit that will allow the light to conquer the darkness I have come to love the young men and women to be confirmed It will be my constant prayer that they will stay close to Jesus and our Church and so have all the support they will need to persevere as followers of Christ Join me in this prayer we all need one another

Another shaft of light that has come about recently has been a way of beginning to communicate with our sis-ter parish St Annersquos in Chardonnieres Haiti At every Mass as I mention this parish in the prayers I have felt a twinge of regret that I have not heard from Fr Gilber Brutus for so long Then one day much to my delight I found a voice mail from him on my cell phone He left his phone number and by discussing this at our Webex meetings I found out how I was able to return his call The language barrier makes communicating by phone very difficult I was able to decipher that they are experiencing a sever drought that has taken a great toll on their crops On the bright side they have not been hard hit by the coronavirus Both of us were like little children excited about having made contact

Now another step in my education with technology There is an app Google Translate that one of our pa-rishioners Marty Stolz is patiently trying to help me understand My administrative assistant Teri Rawson has already mastered the use of this app therefore it look like the lines of communication are open Much more to come on this front

Today is Fatherrsquos Day a time to recognize the irreplaceable value of the love and guidance of fathers in the well being of their sons and daughters May all fathers be guided by the Lordrsquos grace and receive on this side of life our admiration and support The task before them is great but so important All the surveys show that if a father practices the faith the chance his children will is increased greatly

Let us continue to pray for and love one another

The Church of Saint Roch Oxford MA THE TWELFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME June 21 2020

Fr Roy
