SERVICE PROJECT
Saturday March 28th from 9 to 12am, Tour the Aid for Friends building on Townsend Rd and help package prepared meals.
We will also be bringing frozen meals with us. If you are interested in participating in this activity or would like to send a meal contact [email protected]
About Aid For Friends: With food and friendship at the heart of our mission, we discovered that many of our clients have unmet needs that threaten their independence and sometimes their very safety. In response, we developed programs providing additional aid and advocacy. We have developed strong collaborative relationships with other social service organizations and religious groups such as Catholic Social Services, Episcopal Community Services, Deliverance Evangelistic Church, the Salvation Army and others to better serve economically disadvantaged areas. Together we form meals centers. Aid For Friends provides the meals and the other organizations help distribute the meals. Operation Quick Serve provides interim meals and outreach services to those waiting to be matched to a volunteer visitor. We provide free meals for family members who care for seriously ill or disabled loved ones through our Caregiver Support Program. For our many clients with health issues, we provide supplemental foods such as orange juice, soup, Ensure, etc. so that they are receiving the necessary vitamins and minerals, and calories. Our demonstration/production kitchen provides a venue for group cooks to cover any shortfall in the meal supply and to ensure variety when needed. Aid For Friends provides essential items to our client/friends when they are not able to obtain them. These items include such as toaster ovens, fans, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, reflective address numbers. If our client/friends qualify for special assistance or support from other agencies, we help them access those programs. We send birthday greeting cards to our client friends and distribute donated Gifts of Warmth such as new afghans, sweaters, robe, personal items, and slippers for special holidays. Each client also receives a poinsettia at the beginning of the holiday season.

MARCH 2015
Chapter 5:
Creating the Future
Sexual intimacy
between a man and
a woman raises the
possibility of children. There are many other
honorable relationships which include degrees of
commitment and affection, but marriage has a
unique mission: to integrate the fertility of male and
female with the fidelity of God’s covenant. Catholic
parenting relies on the same rationale as
sacramental marriage: love in the shape of service,
sacrifice, trust, and openness to God’s will. If and
when a marriage is blessed with children, love
orients parents to their children’s education and
spiritual formation. Jesus said to his disciples “Let the
children come unto me,” and it is the responsibility of
all Catholic adults to shepherd children into a
relationship with God and the people of God. The
whole parish should be involved in supporting
marriages, families and children. We build the
future of our society child by child, family by
family. Vatican II called the family a “domestic
church,” and the little church of the family takes its
orientation from the faith and mission of the larger
Church. It is a mother’s and a father’s responsibility
to be with children at home and in church, and to
pray together regularly. Children will learn the faith
only when they are taught. The way a family
responds to adversity, or gathers for meals, or
makes financial decisions and sets priorities - these
and many other aspects of “home economics” shape
the values and identities of our children. “Love is our
mission” because even in the middle of our humble
daily routines, Catholics live with a bold and
glorious purpose.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 5:7-
9; John 12:20-33
In today’s Gospel, Jesus
compares his life and ours
with a grain of wheat. If the
grain falls into the earth and
dies, it then rises as a stalk of
wheat that gives life by
feeding others. Like the grain of wheat, we must be
willing to lose our lives in order to gain eternal life.
Jesus knows that the hour of his death when he will
be lifted up on the cross is coming soon. But he also
knows that when he is lifted up, he will draw
everyone, Jews and Greeks and all the world's
people, to himself.
What does it mean to you to hear the words
“Whoever loves his life loses it…”?
To lose your life means to lay down your attachments
to anything or anyone that prevents you from
following Jesus.
For people your age in today's world, what might
some of those things and persons be?
Who or what helps you to be a faithful follower of
COVERING OF THE STATUES – You will notice this
week that once again the statues and crucifix are
covered. The custom of veiling the images during
the last two weeks of Lent hails from the former
liturgical calendar in which the Passion was read on
the Fifth Sunday of Lent (hence called "Passion
Sunday") as well as on Palm Sunday, Tuesday and
Wednesday of Holy Week, and Good Friday. For
this reason the period following the Fifth Sunday of
Lent was called Passiontide. Today, many churches
still cover images starting this Sunday until the end
of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday.
The purpose was (and still is) to help us concentrate
and reflect more deeply on Christ’s work of
redemption and prepare to enter the holiest week
of the year. Take time this week and reread over
and over again today’s psalm response… “Create a clean heart, O God.” (Psalm 51)

THE CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL FOR 2015 “GIVING HOPE”. This year’s video highlighted some of the areas where Catholic Charities is able to touch people’s lives.
Courtney and Christopher Hanes were elated with the birth of their second child but their elation was soon tempered with
the realization that their son had Down syndrome. Knowing that Mick would be faced with unique challenges they worked hard to find out how to give him not only the kind of education that would prepare him for life, but one that would also give him the Catholic identity that is so important to their family.
After carefully evaluating their options, Mick was enrolled in Our Lady of Confidence and the Hanes have never looked back. Mick, along with his classmates are taught reading, math, telling time and understanding money. In addition the program includes physical therapy, speech and language therapy, music and art.
Without the support of the Catholic Charities Appeal, Our Lady of Confidence would not be able to provide Mick and his classmates the one-of-a-kind education that they receive along with knowing their Catholic identity.
These are just a very small sampling of the services that can be provided when we “Give Hope”. With our help we have the ability to sustain, and hopefully expand these worthy services. Please pray for the success of this year’s campaign and be as generous as you can to this worthy cause.
