Plans for Splashway
Waterpark trip on Aug. 5 The Sunday School and Youth Group are taking a trip to Splashway Family Waterpark on Sunday, August 5. We will leave from church following worship service that day. You can pack a sack lunch or buy something at the park. Ice chests are permitted but cannot contain glass bottles or alcohol. Splashway is located at 5211 Main St., Sheridan. We will have a reserved picnic table area in the same location as last year. Contact Eva Nell Griffith or Lana Jarzombek with any questions.
Blessing of Backpacks to
be held on Aug. 5 and 12
August 5 is the first Sunday for the Blessing of Backpacks, which will be repeated on August 12. Students of all ages – from preschool to college students – are invited to bring their backpacks, tote bags, laptop bags, or anything else they take to school and to receive a blessing and prayer as we ask God’s blessings on them and their studies for the coming school year.
Requests for Pastor visits
or hospital visits During the summer months, Pastor's schedule is more flexible than usual. If you wish to visit with her, she can meet with you either at church or in your home. Just give her a call or send her an email. Her contact information is located on page 8 of this newsletter.
Confirmation class
resumes on August 19 Confirmation class resumes on August 19 at 10:15am in the sanctuary. Our five students and Pastor Anne are ready for their year studying the catechism in preparation for Affirmation of Baptism this spring. We will also meet on September 9, with other dates to be decided on as calendars are checked and re-checked!
Celebration of Christian
Education Sunday to be
held August 26
The 9am worship service on August 26 will be a celebration of our entire Christian Education program, with the singing of Sunday School songs, old and new. We'll also be presenting Bibles to our 2nd graders (and any 3-5 graders that haven't received a Bible yet), installing Sunday School Teachers, introducing classes and teachers for 2018-19, and recommitting ourselves to Christian Education for all ages at St. Peter's. After worship, at 10:15, we'll have our final Spark'd Bible study about Jesus blessing the children. Then we'll Rally together in fellowship over a potluck meal. NOTE: There will be no communion on this Sunday, August 26. It has been moved to August 19.
Youth Group to hold
Planning Meeting and
Swim Party Youth of all ages are invited to a swimming party and planning meeting on Friday, August 10, from 5-7pm at the Jarzombek residence, 459 Beck Road in Goliad. We will plan activities for the fall and discuss upcoming leadership opportunities for youth. Bring your calendar! A clipboard is available in the parish hall for families to sign up to bring refreshments.
The second session of the Spark’d Summer Study for families was held on July 15th. Families gathered to read the story “David is Chosen” from their Spark Bible. Children learned that, although David had several older brothers who were stronger and more handsome, they weren’t fit to be king because they were missing something important- joy and love! God saw inside David’s heart and saw that he was FILLED with joy and love. God knew that David was the one fit to be the king. Youth discussed how God sees inside all of our hearts and wants us to be filled with joy and love. Pastor Anne taught the youth the song, “Two Little Eyes to look to God” and introduced them to the new Bible memory verse- God has chosen me to do his work. Following the story and song, children went to the kitchen to participate in a brownie challenge. Ms. Sarah took the group of experienced bakers while Harley took the younger kids. Each group tried to see who could make the most delicious brownies. And wouldn’t you know, much like the story of Daniel, the younger, less experienced bakers won the challenge! Unfortunately the
experienced “big kids” were missing something important- oil. Just as the older brother’s weren’t fit to be king without joy and love, the big kids’ brownies weren’t quite right without oil. For the craft component of the lesson, Ms. Jill and Ms. Jackie assisted the youth in creating beautiful kaleidoscopes. Youth used an assortment of colors to create beautiful images that could only be seen when you looked inside of the kaleidoscope. Just another reminder of how important it is to take the time to look inside of things and get to know others instead of focusing on outside appearances. We are officially half way through our series and invite everyone to the next session on August 12th when we study “Young Jesus in the Temple”.

Council News from June
and July At their regular meeting in June, council heard updates on current projects including pictorial directory, review of policies and procedures, reenactment of Mutual Ministry Committee, Pastor Anne’s activity report for the month, and progress on church security. They addressed the unreliability of the current phone service in the church office and suggested publicizing again Pastor Anne’s member visitation process through the clipboard list. In Christian Education and Youth Ministry news, council heard a report on Camp Ministry Sunday, upcoming dates for VBS, Summer Sunday school, Summer Family Trip to Splashway, Blessing of Backpacks, Summer Adult Bible Study, Rally Day and the start of Fall Sunday school. From the Property Committee came a report on recent septic system work. Council was provided information on proper procedures for using electronics to review and discuss at a later date. Final plans were made for New Member Reception. It was decided to have a Council Retreat in July on the regular date and time, instead of a regular business meeting. The Council Retreat was held in July with a focus on team building to further enable individual members to learn more about each other and increase their ability to work together to lead St. Peter’s in God’s will. Members participated in a meal together and some impromptu conversation using sentence starters and questions. They opened their minds to God’s words through a devotion led by Pastor Anne and shared their Biblical knowledge through a trivia game. The future plans and concerns for St. Peter’s as well as acknowledgment of the strengths of the congregation and its ministries were all addressed at the retreat.
ELCA missionary, the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Schneider, led St. Peter’s worship service on June 24. Pastor Schneider, who has been teaching at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Hong Kong for the past 3½ years has finished her missionary work, and will soon be going to Mexico City as a student.
At the July 17 worship service, the sign painted by Gerald Griffith with the new name selected for the picnic area was dedicated. The sign will now be placed at the picnic area.

Southwestern Texas Women of the ELCA 31st Annual Synodical Convention will be held September 28—30, 2018, at the Pearl Hotel, South Padre Island. Registration forms are on the bulletin board in the parish hall. The Bible verse for the convention weekend is “Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “peace, be still” and the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”—Mark 4:39. “Pop Tops and Flip Flops”— pop tops for the Women of Faith projects that help provide care for St. Johns, San Juan; flip flops for Saturday sunrise service on the beach. Convention offerings will include monetary offering to go to La Posada Providencia Mission. La Posada Providencia, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Divine Providence, is a ministry for people in crisis from around the world, who are seeking legal refuge in this country. The Shelter staff provides a safe and welcoming home; mentors to promote self-sufficiency and cultural integration; and imparts values which witness God’s Providence in our world. The physical offering, for La Posada, is asking for Walmart, Target, HEB, gas cards, etc. The Silent Auction will be divided 50% to Costa Rican Lutheran Church and 50% to Family Crisis Center, Inc. Family Crisis Center Mission works to assist victims and children in preventing and ultimately ending domestic violence and sexual assault in Northern Cameron and Willacy Counties.
Lutheran World Relief
collection of kit items St. Peter’s Women of the ELCA are collecting items for 2018 Lutheran World Relief kits. For your convenience, post–card size lists of the required school supplies are on the bulletin table in the narthex. Complete listing of all the kits and required kit items are found on page 33 of the 2018 St. Peter’s Church Yearbook or pick up the “Supplies for LWR Kits” page on the table by the closet between the narthex and fellowship hall. Please place all kit items in the plastic container by the closet. Money may also be designated for purchasing kit items or for shipping. When using an offering envelope, please designate “LWR kits” or “LWR shipping fund” on the envelope. If there are questions regarding Lutheran World Relief donations or kit items, please contact Linda Dornburg, LWR coordinator for St. Peter’s.
Invitation to help in raising
funds for Cross Trails Ministry We would love for you to have your members attend the Lutheran Fall Festival in Fredericksburg on September 15, 2018. However it is even more fun if you are involved. Get your men’s, women’s, youth, family or congregational groups together and sign up! There are several events that are all explained in the letter on the bulletin board in the parish hall. Check it out along with the flyers and registration forms needed for participating in a great cause to benefit Camp Chrysalis and Ebert Ranch Camp.
WELCA plans for 2018 Convention
Collection of pop tops for
companion synod in Costa Rica Collection containers for pull tabs from soda cans are located on the table by the open closet in the narthex. These pull tabs (or “pop tops”) are used by members of our companion synod in Costa Rica, Iglesia Luterana Costarricense, to make purses and other crafts to supplement their income. The Women of the ELCA will be taking the tabs to the Southwestern Texas Women’s Convention that will be held on South Padre Island in September 2018.

Summer travels with Jesus
At the beginning of summer, Pastor Anne reminded the children that everyone should take Jesus along on their summer vacation and other activities. As a visually reminder that Jesus travels with us, she gave each of them a picture of Jesus on a stick to color and take with them. Here are some of the places that “Flat Jesus” has traveled this summer with St. Peter’s members and friends. Where will Jesus travel next?
Thank you from
summer campers
Dear Congregation and WELCA, Thank you for sending me to camp. I made lots of new friends in my cabin. My favorite part of Camp Lutherhill was the worship. I can't wait to go back next year! Love, Hunner Parma
Dear St Peter’s Lutheran Church, Thank you for letting me have the opportunity to go to church camp. I loved to have fun and also while learning about God! I absolutely enjoyed swimming in the pool. I also enjoyed the food! I am definitely going to go next year! Love, Jillian Griffith (cabin 12)
Dear St Peter’s Lutheran Church, Thanks for letting me go to church camp. It was my first year at church camp and I loved it. But my favorite activities were the pond and trampoline. I also love singing and praying and learning about God. Love, Lynleigh Griffith
Dear St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Thank you for helping pay for me to go to Lutherhill. Camp was really fun and I enjoyed swimming in the pool. The food was very good. I made friends with some of cabin 1 Lyles, because they were fun and made me feel better when I was hurt. Griffen, my cabin leader, helped me understand the lessons in Bible study. We had a love bomb war with cabin 9, where we wrote good messages to each other in chalk on their porch. On Wednesday, I enjoyed the labyrinth for Bible study. My cabin leaders worked in the canteen, where we played games like foosball and had snacks. I led the opening during morning worship. Thank you again for the chance to go to camp and learn that Jesus wants us to Be Someone. A Happy Camper, Gregory Schoener (cabin 11)

Cross Trails Ministry
Thank You
Dear Members of St. Peter's Lutheran, On behalf of Cross Trails Ministry, I would like to thank you for the generous gifts of $62 dated June 13, 2018 and $127.26 dated July 9, 2018. Many of the programs and opportunities that Cross Trails Ministry offers would not be possible without generous gifts such as yours. Your gift to the annual fund will help to provide financial stability and ongoing support to the overall ministry. It will be used to supplement the fees paid by all campers and retreaters to keep our programs affordable, provide financial aid for those who need it, and help us to keep the day to day ministry of our camps, retreats and expeditions going as we serve thousands each year! We are truly grateful for your prayers, support and partnership. Thank you once again for your generous gifts!
Yours in Christ, Deanna Christensen Executive Director Cross Trails Ministry
Upbring Thank You Dear Members of St. Peter's Lutheran, It is an honor to stand alongside loyal friends like you as we work to break the cycle of child abuse for our Texas children. Your generous gifts of $344 and $71.45 on 5/27/18 will create a beautiful legacy for generations to come. I simply cannot thank you enough for showing the brave children we serve that they are loved, accepted, and deserving of happiness. Because of thoughtful friends like you, Upbring has developed comprehensive and life-changing programs and services that make a profound difference at every stage of life and for each and every child who longs to see the world through a brighter lens. Together, we are doing essential work, and we are utterly grateful you have chosen to walk alongside us, and girls like 16-year-old Mara who is not only healing but thriving. “Whenever I am having trouble, someone is always there to talk to me. I am thankful for all of the staff and teachers who have helped me get on track to graduate high school early!”
Thank you, again, for your generous gifts. Everything we accomplish, each life we change, is because of gracious friends like you. Thank you for making a difference!
