A MESSAGE FROM AARON KELLY, THE SEMINARIAN WHO HAS BEEN ASSISTING FR. VAN LIESHOUT AND HELPING OUT IN OUR PARISH THIS SUMMER
Dear Friends in Christ,
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for your kind welcome over these past few weeks. St. Peter’s Parish already feels like “home” because of your kindness and prayers. I want to thank Fr. Van Lieshout for his hospitality and for everything he has taught me already in these few short weeks. For those whom I have not met, I look forward to meeting you soon.
In order for you to get to know me, I would like to share a little bit about myself. I am from a small town, Breesport, NY, which is near Horseheads, in the Southern Tier of our diocese. I come from a family of five, with my wonderful parents Kim and Jeff, and my two younger sisters, Abbi and Emma. I graduated from Horseheads High School in 2013 and entered the seminary immediately after graduation.
From a very young age I felt the call to be a priest. My dad tells the story that one night at dinner he asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” To which I responded, “A Father.” Thinking I was talking about being a dad like him, I said, “Like Father at Church.” In third grade, I remember having to do a project on what we wanted to be when we grew up, and again, my answer was “a priest.” That desire has remained constant over the years and has only continued to grow and intensify. Amazingly, many of my initial reasons for wanting to be a priest have remained the same, but have matured and been given new meanings. I credit a lot of my vocation to being involved in liturgical music and developing a love for the liturgy at an early age. When I sang in the children’s choir, I always thought, “I want to do that,” especially when it came time for Holy Week and the liturgies of the Paschal Triduum. In short, my desire to be a priest is rooted in a desire to celebrate the sacraments “with and for the people of God” and to be a father, who gives himself tirelessly out of love for his children.
In order to respond to that call and “put out into the deep,” I decided to enter the college seminary rather than attend a normal undergraduate program. I spent my freshman and sophomore years of college at Cathedral Seminary House of Formation and St. John’s University in Queens, NY. I was then asked by Bishop Salvatore Matano to transfer to The Catholic University of America and Theological College to complete the Basselin Program, a three-year program in philosophy. In May 2017, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy; then, the following May, I graduated with a licentiate (Master’s degree) in philosophy, both from The Catholic University of America. Following graduation, Bishop Matano asked me to complete my theological studies at the Pontifical North American College and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, Italy. I will be starting my third year of theology in September, and God-willing will be ordained a deacon in 2021 and a priest in 2022.
In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano and organ, reading, going for a run, or going out to dinner with family and friends and enjoying their company.
God has blessed me abundantly over the course of these past years. Saying “yes” to his call has brought me greater joy and has taken me on an adventure I could have never imagined. So much of this is thanks to the kindness and prayers of people like you. Please continue to pray for me and for other young men and women, that they may respond generously and say “yes” to God’s call.
Pax et bonum,
Aaron Kelly

PHASE III OF OUR PARISH RE-OPENING Our parish re-opening is going well and this past weekend, two of our 4 Masses were at their 25% capacity. Thank you to all those who are attending and lovingly (albeit uncom-fortably) wearing masks and practicing social-distancing. The good news is that we now have requisite permission to expand to 33% capacity! That should make us all the more able to accommodate those who are ready and desirous to return to Holy Mass!
All of the previous precautions still remain in place: 1) Masks are required to be worn for the duration of Mass. 2) Holy Communion will be distributed after Mass in a slow-
er manner that will allow Father to purify and sanitize his hands in between Communicants as needed.
At the same time, we realize that there are those within in our parish who, due to health concerns, should not return to Mass and/or who do not feel safe doing so. Be assured that Catholics in the Diocese of Rochester are still dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.
Having said that, we would love if ALL 4 of our weekend Masses were filled to the newly expanded capacity. We still anticipate that we should be able to stay within that limit at all of the Masses--with the most room for "growth" available at the Saturday 4 pm Mass and at the Sunday 8 am Mass.
