Still need JOSEPH, A STAR, THREE KINGS, SHEPHERDS AND ANGELS.
FROM THE PASTOR Praise be Jesus Christ!
Around this time of year, I always turn to the writings of one of my favorite saints, St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787), to help me in my personal reflections and prayer in preparation for Christmas. It just seems to me that he grasps and expresses the essence of Christmas so well—with theological clarity, but animated by such tender affection for the infant savior.
In one such Christmas meditation, he writes of the wonderful paradoxes of the Incarnation:
O my Jesus, my supreme and true God! What can have attracted You from heaven to be born in a cave, if it be not the love that You bear for mankind?
What has drawn You from the bosom of Your Father to lay Yourself down in a manager?
What has brought You down from Your throne above the stars, to stretch Yourself on a little straw?
What, from the midst of the nine choirs of angels, has placed You between two animals?
You inflame the seraphim with holy fire, and lo, You are trembling with cold in this stable?
You give motion to the heavens and the sun, and now You cannot move without being carried in some one’s arms!
You provide with food both man and beast, and yet You now require a little milk to sustain Your life?
You are the delight of heaven, and now how is it that I hear You weep and moan?
Tell me who has reduced Thee to such misery? Who has done this? --- LOVE HAS DONE IT; THE LOVE THAT YOU BEAR FOR US HAS DONE IT!
And we can add: The God of the universe who dwells in unapproachable light has so humbled himself to remain with us in the Bethlehem of our Tabernacles! What greater sign could He give us of his merciful, burning desire to save our souls?!
Do not be afraid to recommit your whole life to the Savior this Christmas. Make whatever changes in your life or way of thinking that you know are keeping you in some way distant from Him. Cast into the confessional whatever weight of sin (whether recent or in the long distant past) that might keep you from the joy and freedom that the infant Christ wants you to experience this Christmas.
I will be available for last minute Christmas confessions on Monday, December 23rd from 4pm to 6pm at St. Dominic’s church.
Merry Christmas to all and a sincere “thank you” to all of our parishioners!
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Father Peter Van Lieshout

DECEMBER: MONTH OF DIVINE INFANCY Many Roman Catholics traditionally observe the month of
December as Divine Infancy Month in honor of the Child Jesus, “the center of all preparations and celebrations during the Advent and Christmas Seasons.” The events surrounding Jesus’ birth are found only in Matthew‘s and Luke’s accounts
of the Gospel. In John’s account, which was written later than the others were, there is a very different presentation of Jesus
coming into the world, as “the Word became flesh” (John 1:14). The other accounts of the Gospel stress the humanity
of Jesus, while John’s prologue stresses the divinity. The essence of the John’s prologue is that it is important to
proclaim that God took on human flesh. God became incarnate in Jesus. So we celebrate both the divinity
and humanity of Jesus Christ.
