THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

States and provinces regulate fishing seasons within their

own boundaries. For some species, the fishing season is

open all year long. For others, there is only a brief time that

the fish can be legally taken. The season for sturgeon spear-

ing in the upper Midwest can last just a couple of days de-

pending on where the spearing takes place and when the

limit imposed by regulation is reached. According to data

collected in 2011 by the US Census Bureau, over thirty-

three million Americans go fishing. In that year they spent

nearly $42 billion on fishing activities including trips,

equipment, and licenses. The number of people going fish-

ing jumped by eleven percent from 2006, making it one of

the most popular outdoor activities.

Peter's fishing trip in this weekend's Gospel is not quite as

involved as some trips that modern day fishermen might

take. Since he was a fisherman by trade, he likely walked

out of his house, grabbed a few of his buddies, and went out

in the boat for the night hoping to make a good catch. While

there was always preparation to be done (mending the nets,

repairing the boat, etc.), from the Gospel story it seems that

Peter's decision to go fishing was pretty spontaneous. It was

near dawn when Jesus showed up and they caught a tremen-

dous amount of fish.

Any avid fisherman is always ready to go out and fish.

Once you're out there, it could be just the right moment to

pull in a lot of fish. Like a fisherman, we never quite know

when the moment may come to "catch" someone for Christ.

As Christians, we always have to be prepared to tell the sto-

ry of who Jesus is for us, not in any kind of "preachy" way,

but by living our lives as kind and loving people. The wit-

ness that we give by our example is the only kind of net we

need to attract others to the Lord.

is again being subsidized by local businesses that ad-

vertise. If you own or manage a business and would

like to find out about advertising in our book, please

This past week Archbishop Schnurr named Fr. Rob

Muhlenkamp as the Pastor of the Hamilton Pastoral Region

beginning this summer. The Region is comprised of St.

Joseph, St. Julie Billiart, and St. Peter in Chains parish-

es. This means that Fr. Muhlenkamp will be Pastor of all

three parishes, both St. Joseph and St. Peter this summer

and, the following summer, of St. Julie Billiart as well.

Among his assignments since his ordination in 2010, Fr.

Muhlenkamp was teacher/chaplain at

Badin High School while living at St. Peter in Chains.

More details will be forthcoming. Until then we congratu-

late Fr. Muhlenkamp and extend to him the warmest of

Hamilton welcomes.

We thank Fr. Patrick McMullen for his three years of ser-

ST. PETER IN CHAINS, HAMILTON, OH

SHARING THE GOSPEL

After Jesus rose from the dead, he must have looked very different. Jesus helped his apostles catch a lot of fish, just as he

had done before. Jesus invited his friends to eat with him, and he still broke his bread to share it in the same way he always

had. The disciples still recognized Jesus by the things he did.

Prayer

Dear God, help me to always recognize Jesus.

Something to Draw

Draw a picture of Jesus cooking fish for his friends.

Mission for the Week

Invite a friend over to eat dinner with your family, so you can share food just like Jesus did.
