SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS “The widow’s mite” would be a suitable headline for today’s readings. Ture generosity is por-trayed through the lives of two widows, the most vulnerable people in society. In the First Reading a widow, in the middle of a great famine, shares the last of her resources with the prophet Elijah. Elijah's trust and encouragement (“Do not be afraid.”) strengthen her truest in God and her generosity in sharing her last meal with Elijah is rewarded with a supply of food that lasts through-out the famine. Today’s Gospel reading opens with Jesus’ remarks about the scribes, and these provide the context for what follows. He is criti-cizing the Jewish scribes, the legal experts, for being more interested in receiving honor from people than serving them. Jesus singles out the way “they devour the houses of widows”-a dev-astating criticism! In contrast to their selfishness, Jesus observes a widow in the Temple who pro-vides an authentic example of sacrificial giving. Jesus draws attention to her putting “two small coins worth a few cents” into one of the thirteen collection boxes. Sadly, this translation has lost the beauty of a long English tradition! Literally, the translation should read: “a poor widow came and threw in two mites that make up half a far-thing!” The coin referred to here as “a mite” (Greek lepton) is the lowest denomination of a coin that has ever been struck by any nation in history! And yet she is giving to the treasury what in fact she could not afford. Both readings illustrate the genuine self-sacrificing nature of giving. The widows gave to the extent of hurt-ing! These acts of self-sacrifice by the poorest and most vulnerable offer a beautiful foreshad-owing of the genuine self-sacrifice of Jesus whereby he gave his very life for our salvation. ♦ Have you had an experience (as donor or re-

“There is no other way to describe Augustus Tolton than as a man of hope. He had learned to hope in the
face of incredible odds. Born a slave in Missouri in 1854, the second of three children of Martha Chisley Tolton and Peter Paul Tolton, both slaves and both Catholics, he escaped from slavery with his mother, sister, and brother during the Civil War. His father had run away to join the Union Army in St. Louis, where he soon died. Martha Tolton crossed the Mississippi River with her three children in a rowboat to Illinois where she joined many other blacks who had fled slavery to a free state. Growing up in poverty, Augustus soon developed a desire to become a priest. With the support of two priests in Quincy, one of whom was a Franciscan, he looked for a seminary where he could study, but no American seminary was willing to accept an African American as a student. Hoping against hope, with the help of the minister general of the Franciscans, Augustus Tolton found a place in Urban College in Rome, the seminary attached to the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, where students from Africa where already enrolled. When the time came for Tolton to be ordained, the cardinal pre-fect of the congregation announced that if the Americans had never seen a black priest it was time for them to see one.”
