FORGIVENESS What does Jesus really expect from his disciples? If a brother sins against him as many as seven times, is he still going to be expected to forgive? In his day rabbis taught that you are required to forgive the sin of one against another to the third offence. Surely Jesus will be impressed that Peter is willing to forgive seven times! Seven is a biblical number of perfection and completeness; Jewish people connected it with God. Peter is willing to forgive as much as the Father. But Jesus challenges Peter. No, he insists, not seven times but seventy times seven. That makes 490 times! That kind of forgiveness could take a lifetime. The calculation of the number is not important; the point is that it is a multiplier of Peter’s original seven. Forgiveness in the kingdom of heaven is going to be limitless. Jesus will teach in a parable what he expects from his disciples in regard to forgiveness. The characters in this story grab our attention as do the fantastic amounts of money that are bandied about. The first servant owes the king 10,000 talents. A single talent was equivalent to fifteen years of daily wages, so the debt covers over 150,000 years of work! The servant begs for mercy and shockingly receives it from the lord. No more debt for you or your family, all is completely forgiven! That same person then goes home and throttles a neighbor who owes him a comparatively small amount—only one hundred days’ worth of wages. He has just had 150,000 years of debt wiped away and now he is throwing a neighbor into debtor’s prison until this lesser debt is covered. Of course, his behavior is reported to the master! This is unjust and the master orders a correction. The first character faces torture until his original debt is paid. This is impossible in the real world but becomes a compelling story in the context of the parable, which must have a shocking element that arrests our attention and leaves the mind in doubt as to its precise meaning. This parable works on every level. Parables allow us an insight into the mind of Jesus as he crafts stories that demand our attention, our theological consideration, and our response. He uses hyperbole and exaggeration to make his point—150,000 years of wages weighed against a debt of 100 days of work! One is cancelled, the other is not. Sins forgiven seven times? Sins forgiven 490 times? Is this number meant to be understood as literal? As a finite expectation that limits acts of forgiveness? If so, who is keeping count? No. We understand these numbers as symbolic. They allow us an opportunity to hear an important truth and understand another facet of the kingdom of heaven that Jesus is revealing: Unlimited forgiveness will be the mark of Jesus’s disciples, something Jesus demands among those who will live in the kingdom of heaven. Even I can forgive three times. With some grace possibly seven times, but not 490 times and counting. I am going to need some serious grace to get there! I need to know that I have been generously forgiven so that I can forgive others in the same way. To those who have been given much, much will be required. This is the expectation of Jesus in regard to forgiveness as well. Forgiveness is not an end result but a process. To get good at it we have to practice. There is an old saying that harboring unforgiveness or bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Forgiveness, the kind Jesus is talking about, is good for the soul. It frees us to love as we have been loved. It is a defining hallmark of a Christian. We are called to be the church made up of people who follow St. Paul’s direction in Ephesians 4:31-32, people who have learned how to forgive and love one another from the heart.
