PAUL’S UCC NEWSLETTER JUNE 2018 103 South Second Street Marthasville, MO 63357 (636) 433-2482 [email protected]www.stpaulsuccmo.org A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World Letter from the Pastor I know we’re a couple weeks late on this topic, but I want to cover Pentecost. Pentecost, as we all know, is when the Holy Spirit comes down and goes into the apostles. They are sitting in a room and are consumed by the Spirit. We’re told they go out into a festival and are able to preach the gospel to everyone and to speak to everyone in their native tongue. Some people are moved, but others think they’re drunk. This day is the celebration of the Holy Spirit coming into the world for all people. It is a day that seems kind of strange but is incredibly important in the life of the church. This is the fulfillment of God with us. It’s always amazing in this story to me that there are people from all over that are gathered at this festival with the apostles. These people are from all over the ancient world. Yet, they hear the message preached in their own native tongue. This is something that is really incredible. I think that’s what the Holy Spirit can do for us as well. These people heard the message of God in a way that would have comforted them, as well as in a way that they would have best understood it. This, in and of itself, is quite the miracle, and I think it really speaks to meeting people where they are. How amazing would that have been present there? In an unfamiliar city, not knowing many people, and then to suddenly hear the gospel message being preached in your native tongue—I imagine those who heard it were very grateful for this gift. That’s the great thing about God. We get exactly what we need from God, exactly when we need it. That’s part of the beauty of Pentecost for me. Not only does God give us what we need, but also that God sent a tangible reminder into the world for us that we aren’t alone. God gave us the Holy Spirit to be with us always— to guide us and walk beside us. Just like the people at Pentecost so long ago, we have this spiritual guide that is the spirit of God upon us. Pentecost is literally God with us through the Holy Spirit. This is the joy of Pentecost—that God gives and continues to give to us through the Holy Spirit. We simply cannot ask for a much better gift than that. See you in the pews, Pastor Jeff
