Corpus Christi

Sunday June 10, 2012

Today we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ. As Cath-olics, we are truly blessed to have such a gift like the Eucharist, what an incredible and awesome treasure our Lord left His Church. Looking back to the Bread of Life Discourse in John 6, we read that Jesus taught that the bread and wine were His Body and Blood, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. This teaching cost Him many followers who had been faithful up to that point, for drinking blood was expressly forbidden by the Law (Genesis 9, Leviticus 7, 17) because of its sacredness in making life possible. In discussing the bread and wine as His Body and Blood, Jesus was presenting Himself to the Jews as even more than the manna their ancestors had eaten in the desert. This would have been shocking to many people; even more so because the word we translate ‘eats’ was an especially vivid one. There could be no mistake about what Jesus meant: it was like saying ‘he who munches on my body’. When Jesus saw many followers leave because of this, He turned to the twelve, who had faith to stay with Him, despite not know-ing exactly what He meant by this, yet. Fast forwarding to the Passover Meal shared by Jesus and His Apostles just before His trial, death and res-urrection, which we call the Last Supper, we see how Jesus changed this bread and wine into His Body and Blood for the very first time. During the meal, Jesus took bread, blessed it and broke it: ‘take, eat: this is my Body’, then He took the cup, gave thanks and said: ‘drink of it, all of you, for this is my Blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins’. The Apostles would have been reminded of the Old Covenant from Exodus 24, referring to the ratification of the covenant between God and Israel. It was no accident that the Last Supper was a Passover Meal. Jesus is the perfect Passover Lamb, the Perfect Sacrifice – for the atonement of our sins. Jesus is instituting a new covenant, ratification with His own Blood, where all can have contact with Him, even after the Ascension: The Eucharist, the First Mass, all took place in this upper room in Je-rusalem and is considered the New Passover. The Eucharist truly is Christ, which He instituted at the Last Supper (Matthew 26), and those who would be like Christ take every opportunity to receive the Eucharist. Jesus Himself taught that the bread and wine are, not just symbolically, His Real and True Body and Blood. (He didn’t chase people when they walked away)(John 6) This doctrine, which the bread and wine change into the True Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, is called tran-substantiation. The Eucharist is the chief Sacrament from which all others spring as a direct result of Christ’s Death, Resurrection and Ascension. It sums up the sacrificial nature of Christianity in a clear way every time Mass is said. Though the other Sacraments also embody the sacrificial principle, they receive their direction and mean-ing from the Eucharist. The Eucharist completes Christian initiation and is the source and summit of Christian life, with which all other Sacraments and Church ministries are bound up and toward which all are oriented. In Christ, Jeremy Hylka

And as they were eating, He took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, 'Take; this is my body.' (Mark 14:22)

And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, 'This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.' (Mark 14:23-24)

EXCHANGE STUDENTS COMING TO JCA We are looking for homes for the 4 German foreign exchange students who have been accepted into Joliet Catholic Academy for the 2012-13 school year: There are 2 girls and 2 boys from ages 14-17, all B+ students, with interests from photography to fishing and cooking to tutoring. We’re looking for good families to open their heart and home to these students. They come with their own spending money, health insurance and good English skills. They don’t have to have their own bedroom; they may share with your child of the same gender. You don’t even need to have a child of your own in the home. They just need a loving family. You can call Jayme Cook 815-795-4458 for more information.

Beginning in July you will re-ceive your weekly offering enve-lopes from a new provider. They are very colorful and are less expensive showing good stewardship. We thank you for your continued support of your parish and hope you enjoy the new envelopes. Thank you. Lynne and Denise
