At any rate, with joy and delight, I say: “Welcome Home!” As we journey home, let’s once more refresh our faith with the grace-filled spirituality of the Eucharist by reflecting on these insights of Henri Nouwen, one of the spiritual writers of our times, when he wrote: “The EUCHARIST is the most ordinary and the most divine gesture [of Jesus]. It’s the story of God who wants to come close to us: we can see him with our own eyes, hear him with our own ears, touch him with our own hands; so close that there is nothing between us and him; nothing that separates, nothing that divides, nothing that creates distance.” So, today, as we come back in-person in the celebration of the Eucharist, let’s rebuild a sacred space of Christ’s body and blood in our hearts – so that we can concretely experience God’s real presence in our lives. When this happens, we are not far then from the words of Pope Francis, when he said: “Eat this sacred food, so that your bond of unity with Christ may never be broken. Drink this sacred blood, the price he paid for you, so that you may never lose heart because of your sinfulness.” Then remember the promise of Jesus for those who “eat his flesh and drink his blood,” his guaran- teed reward is “eternal life.” (JN 6:54) Again, “WELCOME HOME!” Blessings, Fr. OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God’s love. We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ.

Dear Holy People of God:

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the BODY and BLOOD of Christ SUNDAY! It’s the festival of our salvation enshrined in this Eucharistic Prayer:

"This is my BODY…given up for you; this is the chalice of my BLOOD… poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins."

How wonderful it is that we’re able to hear again in-person those words of Jesus as we REOPEN this weekend (June 13 & 14) the Church for public Masses. As we begin our Masses, it’s limited to 100 attendees in every given Mass. This is to comply strictly with Diocesan Directives and State Guidelines. For more detailed information about the REOPENING, please visit the parish website: www.sptacc.org

After almost three months when it was closed due to COVID-19 pandemic, everyone must be excited with Bishop Barnes’ announcement, but at the same time, some will be disappointed and frustrated because of the limited number. But remember, this is only the beginning, and in due time it will progress to the Church’s full opening. So, please, please and please, be patient! At any rate, with joy and delight, I say: “Welcome Home!”

As we journey home, let’s once more refresh our faith with the grace-filled spirituality of the Eucharist by reflecting on these insights of Henri Nouwen, one of the spiritual writers of our times, when he wrote:

“The EUCHARIST is the most ordinary and the most divine gesture [of Jesus]. It’s the story of God who wants to come close to us: we can see him with our own eyes, hear him with our own ears, touch him with our own hands; so close that there is nothing between us and him; nothing that separates, nothing that divides, nothing that creates distance.”

So, today, as we come back in-person in the celebration of the Eucharist, let’s rebuild a sacred space of Christ’s body and blood in our hearts – so that we can concretely experience God’s real presence in our lives. When this happens, we are not far then from the words of Pope Francis, when he said:

Then remember the promise of Jesus for those who “eat his flesh and drink his blood,” his guaran-teed reward is “eternal life.” (JN 6:54)

Again, “WELCOME HOME!”

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD.

— Deuteronomy 8:3b

Food from heaven God sustained the people of Israel for forty years in the desert with manna sent down from heaven, and Moses doesn’t want them to forget it. God brought forth water from stone for them to drink, and Moses doesn’t want them to forget this, either. And Moses tells them—twice—that the food that God sent was a food that neither they nor their ancestors before them had ever experienced before.

Jesus too speaks of food come down from heaven, food that the Jewish people had never experienced before. Recalling the manna in the desert, Jesus doesn’t want them to forget it ei-ther, explaining that he is the food and drink of eternal life. And Paul reiterates to the Corinthi-ans and to all of us that in the bread and in the cup, we share in the body and blood of Christ.

Evangelization & Faith Page 7

W hen we receive Holy Communion, we hear the

words, “This is my Body” and “This is my Blood,” to which we dutifully answer, “Amen.” But have you ever considered ex-actly what those words mean? Today’s Gospel asks us to ex-amine Jesus’s statement in a new way, because when we really look at them, his words are as shocking now as they were two thousand years ago. Jesus is telling us to eat his flesh and drink his blood! Little wonder people thought he was suggesting cannibalism when they first heard this teaching. As Catholics we receive the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ each time we receive the Eucharist. But do we really believe that? It’s a question worth examining because in the Mass, Jesus is truly made present under the appearance of bread and wine. Each time we attend Mass, we celebrate the fact our God loves us so much that he nourishes us with himself so that we can become saints. It is both the greatest gift—and greatest mystery—of our faith. Ultimate-ly, it is also the principal reason to be a Catholic—in order to

receive the Lord in Holy Com-munion, just as he commanded the Jews of his day…and in-vites us to do today.

D IGGING DEEPER FOR ISCUSSION FORMED

members can watch the short “Opening the Word “ VIDEO free at sptacc.formed.org Reflect on these following ques-tions with a friend or family:

• Have you ever stopped to consider that the Eucha-rist is truly the Body and Blood of Our Lord? Does it seem shocking to you that, as Catholics, we be-lieve that we literally are fed by our God? Can you understand why it would be shocking to others?

• What two sacraments did Jesus institute at the Last Super?

P RAYER: Picture yourself listening to Jesus. You

hear him say that “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” For a mo-ment put aside what you know about the Eucharist and imag-ine what might go through your mind when you hear those

words. Are you shocked? Horri-fied? Curious? If you could ask Jesus a question at that mo-ment, what would you ask? Now imagine yourself attending Mass. It’s time to receive the Eucharist, and as you approach the altar, think about Jesus’s words. How does this change the way you receive the Eucha-rist?

R ESOLUTION: The next time you receive Commun-

ion, really think about the fact that you are receiving the actual Body and Blood of the Lord, under the species (or appear-ance) of bread and wine. Make sure that you are in a worthy state (no serious sin) before you receive.
