The Gospel told the parable of the Good Shepherd. In it John reflects that a good shepherdcares for, and keeps his sheep safe from harm. They recognisehis voice and will follow him. In telling this parable Jesus is identifying himself as the shepherd who will keep his flock (us) safe from harm. But Jesus goes further when he identifies himself as the gate of the sheepfold. If the sheep are to flourish they have to go through the gate of the fold. If they stay within the fold they will become malnourished due to the lack of pasture, so they must venture out for food only to return to the fold at night for the protection provided by the shepherd. So too, we are called to come and go from Gods care into the wider world to search for nourishment and to spread the good news of the gospel. However, we must continue to seek interaction with God and members of our faith community to continue to grow and be nourished by Gods word. It is only in this way that we are able to have eternal lifewith God. MOTHERS DAY—SUNDAY 14 MAY—We hope all our mothers and those like mothers to us, have a fabulous day on Sunday. NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS WEEK—This week is National Volunteers week and, as a school, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who volunteer their time and effort to help make St. Patricks School the fabulous school that it is. Your effort does not go unnoticed and we appreciate the things you do, both big and small, to help our school be successful. Dear Parents and Members of St Patrick’s School Community,

SUNDAY 7 MAY—Last Sunday was the fourth Sunday of Easter. The Gospel told the parable of the Good Shepherd. In it John reflects that a ‘good shepherd’ cares for, and keeps his sheep safe from harm. They ‘recognise’ his voice and will follow him. In telling this parable Jesus is identifying himself as the shepherd who will keep his flock (us) safe from harm. If they stay within the fold they will become malnourished due to the lack of pasture, so they must venture out for food only to return to the fold at night for the protection provided by the shepherd. So too, we are called to come and go from God’s care into the wider world to search for nourishment and to spread the good news of the gospel. However, we must continue to seek interaction with God and members of our faith community to continue to grow and be nourished by God’s word. It is only in this way that we are able to have ‘eternal life’ with God.

different materials and resources around the room to help him with his Maths sums. He has been working really hard to complete tasks. Well done to both Cooper and Olivia.

CROSS COUNTRY— Congratulations to all our senior students who completed in the local cross country organized by Nhill College on Monday. It was very pleasing that all our students completed the course with determination. Four students qualified for the next level at Kaniva on Tuesday 16 May. Heath came 2nd in the 11 Year Boys, Nessa came 4th in the 11 Year Girls, while Shai came 5th and Jayda 6th in the 10 Year and under Girls. Parents will need to make arrangements to take their child to Kaniva. Permission notes for this event were sent home on Wednesday. On behalf of the school community I wish these four students all the best for next Tuesday’s event.

READING AWARDS—Last week we congratulated Tia and Erin for reading 30 books since the start of the year. Great work girls.

NAPLAN—Congratulations to the Years 3 and 5 students who completed NAPLAN assessments this week. Reports to parents will be prepared by an external body and distributed later in the year.

READING CHALLENGE—Staff having been busy planning a ‘Reading Challenge’ to expand the types of books that students read, as well as promoting the idea of reading books written by a variety of authors. All students who complete the challenge will go into the draw for a significant prize (which is yet to be determined). To enter the draw students will need to complete 5 of the 7 possible tasks by Wednesday 28 June. The winner will be selected on Thursday 29 June. One of the tasks involves reading to someone else which could be any member of your family. Please encourage your child/ren to engage with this challenge. It will be a lot of fun.

CONGRATULATIONS SIENNA for achieving 10 out of 10 on your spelling test last Friday. What a great foundation for reading and writing.

HIGH TEA PREPARATION—Senior students really enjoyed the opportunity to prepare food for our Mother’s Day High Tea. It was a great opportunity to put some Maths skills and personal and social skills into practice.

UPCOMING EVENTS

MOTHER’S DAY HIGH TEA—We are really looking forward to sharing High Tea with our mothers, grandmothers and those like mothers to us tomorrow between 2:15 and 3:15pm. The students have enjoyed preparing food for this special event.

JUNIOR CLASS NEWS from Mrs Dent

This week in the Junior room we are reading a book called 'I wonder why the sun rises'. We continue our learning about the sun, earth, weather and seasons. Our vocabulary words for this week include, busy, sprout, frozen and orbit.

In Writing students are finishing off the fantastic job they have done on their recounts about the Gingerbread man,. Students have the opportunity to use the computers to publish their work. Students in Foundation and Year 1 have started to create their own books based on the story, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. However, instead of it being about a caterpillar it is about the students.

In Maths, Foundation students have begun learning about addition. Years 1 and 2 students continue working on subtraction and a range of different strategies they can use to solve subtraction problems.

In Integrated Studies, students are learning about natural disasters with a focus on earthquakes this week. Students have had the opportunity to put together a puzzle of the tectonic plates to see where earthquakes are more likely to occur.

In Physical Education this week students continue to work on their gross motor skill with a focus on throwing and catching.

SENIOR CLASS NEWS from Miss Anson

Congratulations to all students who have completed NAPLAN testing this week. This week in English, the students have been reading about climate change for shared reading. The students have been creating Mother’s Day cards and vouchers during writing time as well as writing invitations to the community for our upcoming Open Day. Our vocabulary chart words this week are ‘climate’, ‘migrate’, ‘gradually’, ‘landscape’ and ‘prehistoric’.

In Mathematics the students are studying subtraction. They have all been learning different strategies to work out subtraction sums such as breaking it apart using their place value knowledge, using number lines and also algorithms.

In Integrated Studies, the students have been researching and learning about earthquakes. The students have specifically looked at tectonic plates, how long an earthquake lasts for and how far it is felt, as well as the effects of earthquakes on people and animals.

We ask that students bring a gold coin donation which will be donated to cancer research and we also request that all families provide a plate of morning tea for us to share with our guests. Please invite family and friends to this great fundraiser for Cancer Research.

KIDS AND MEDIA from Kids Helpline—Children and young people have access to lots of social media, TV, movies and games. While the wonderful array of content available offers many positive learning opportunities, there is some content that may have potentially harmful effects on young people.

Keeping an eye on what media children and young people are accessing, and any changes in their behaviour, is a good way to help avoid any long-term worries down the track. Kids Helpline (KHL) has put together Tip Sheets that suggest ways to help manage worry and concerns some may experience due to exposure to some media content. The Tip Sheets are available at the following website—

https://kidshelpline.com.au/kids-and-the-media

As always, please contact the school if you have any questions about what is happening at St. Patrick’s School.

Kathryn Bendall, Principal.
