Dear Parishioners,

As a promised last week at Mass, I present you this Family Prayer Book. As I stated in my sermon, A Family who Prays Together, Stays Together. Only those Families who are grounded in Prayer can be what they are called to be as Proclaimers of the Gospel in the World in which we live. It is my hope that this prayer book will help renew the families of our parishes.

In this book, I give three different ways to pray together as a family.

(1) The first way is the Rosary (the way my family prayed together in my childhood) - you might have different members of the family lead a decade. I have provided the Rosary in a step by step format.

(2) The second way encourages the Family to encounter the Lord in the words of the Sacred Scriptures. It begins and closes with prayer. In this book a provide a Gospel Reading Plan which allows you to read the four Gospels twice in a year.

(3) The third way allows the Family to pray together some basic prayers of our Catholic Tradition. This is particularly helpful for our younger families because it will assist small children in learning their prayers.

I am sure that if our families put one of these ways into practice, that Our Gracious Lord will richly bless them.

With Prayers,

Praying the Rosary

1. On the cross make the Sign of the Cross and pray the Apostle’s Creed.

T. I BELIEVE IN GOD, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

U. I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

2. On the first Large Bead we pray the Lord’s Prayer

This last method of Family Prayer uses the Basic Prayers that every Catholic Child needs to know. By praying them together daily as a family, young children will learn them easily.

The Sign of the Cross We make the sign of the cross by touching with the right hand the forehead, saying,

In the Name of the Father then the breast, adding and of the Son and then from the left shoulder to the right, while saying

and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

O UR FATHER, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

H AIL MARY, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy

womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

G LORY BE to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall

be, world without end. Amen.

Act of Contrition

O MY GOD, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of

heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend You, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of You grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

The Apostle’s Creed

I BELIEVE IN GOD, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, Our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Sign of the Cross Repeat Sign of the Cross on Page 27.
