Today’s gospel is a good one for us to reflect on as we prepare to enter into Lent this coming week. St. Peter has a powerful encounter with Jesus on the boat. Peter comes to see clearly the divinity of Jesus, and in that light he sees very clearly his own sins and weaknesses. He asks Jesus to depart from him because he feels so unworthy and sees his own sinfulness. Jesus does not reject Peter, and he does not tell him that he is beyond redemption. In fact, Jesus is going to call St. Peter to follow him. He is going to empower him so that he will be able to be an instrument of God’s grace. Peter’s redemption begins with his acknowledgement that he needs God’s forgiveness and mercy. God will now be able to work through Peter because he has been humbled.
The season of Lent is a special time to receive God’s forgiving and healing grace. Like St. Peter, we all need conversion and change. As we spend time with Jesus in prayer, and receive him the Eucharist, he will help us to see clearly where we need growth in our lives. God cannot do much with an arrogant spirit, but he can do amazing things with a humble heart. The good news of this gospel is that God can do great things through broken people. Like Peter we may have times when we feel so unworthy, when we tell Jesus to depart from us. Rather than departing from us, he will continue to invite us to follow him.
A great way to enter the season of Lent is to participate in one of the Ash Wednesday Masses. We have the times listed below. Having those ashes placed on our foreheads is a sign that we realize our need for God in our lives. We need his forgiveness and mercy. During Lent we will have extra times available for the sacrament of reconciliation. We will also be praying the Stations of the Cross on Fridays. There are many spiritual growth programs available for the whole parish throughout the season. Daily Mass is another great way to receive blessings during Lent.
May the Lord bless you and our whole parish during this holy season as we begin the journey to Easter!
In Christ,
Msgr. Steve

Fr. Browning’s Lenten Suggestions
T he beautiful season of Lent is upon us -Ash Wednesday is February 10th. It is a season of
renewal and conversion. Let’s not let it go by without taking advantage of such a rich opportunity. God gives many wonderful graces during this season. He is calling each of us to take the next step with Him on the path of discipleship. Here are some thoughts to get you started. Let’s pray for each other!!
Come up with a plan that is prudent for your state of life. 1. Daily Mass: will change your life. As often as you can. 2. Confession: at some point during Lent. 3. Daily Prayer: 15 minutes minimum a day, 30 minutes
is optimal. Suggestions: A. Morning Offering B. Rosary C. Read Sacred Scripture (Start with the Gospels or the Daily Mass Readings) • Sign up for one of the daily meditations at right. D. Divine Mercy Chaplet E. Read a good spiritual book (Interior Freedom, Fr. Jacques Philippe) or email me for other suggestions.
F. Stop by Adoration on Tuesday or Wednesday (another life changer) G. Pull out your calendar and write in a
family member, friend, co-worker, or difficult person, on each day of Lent. Offer all your prayers, works, joys, and sufferings that day for them. Powerful practice!
4. Fast: Is there something in your life that steals your time, or is sinful, or focuses you on yourself instead of God and others? If so, eradicate it from your life.
5. Almsgiving: Find a good charitable organization to support either financially or through volunteer work. Do corporal and spiritual works of mercy.
Daily Meditations: Dynamic Catholic follows the Rediscover Jesus book we offered at Christmas (http://dynamiccatholic.com/bestlentever/); Bishop Barron’s daily reflections (http://www.lentreflections.com/); RedeemedOnline (http://redeemedonline.com/); EWTN has some good resources (http://www.ewtn.com/faith/lent/).
The spiritual work you put into Lent will bear many fruits,

“Catching Fire, Becoming Flame” Facilitated by Our Parish Priests. Program by Fr. Albert Haase, OFM
9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Downtown • 7:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Crane Road
Tuesday, Feb. 9 — “The Spiritual Journey as a Process of Transformation” God longs to transform us into saints. During this session we’ll look at the stages of spiritual growth. This growth is a gradual, ongoing process of being transformed by God into a “little Christ” for the loving service of the present moment.
Tuesday, Feb. 16 — “Your Image of God” A person’s image of God has a tremendous influence on the way they live their life. A spiritually healthy image of God leads one in the direction of holiness. We’ll explore this vitally important area of spirituality.
Tuesday, Feb. 23 — “The Examen” This prayer practice, designed by St. Ignatius of Loyola, has a 500 year history. It will deepen your sensitivity and awareness of God’s presence in your life.
Tuesday, March 1 — “Seven Principles of Prayer” These principles are at the heart of the scriptures and our Catholic Tradition, and will deepen your understanding of prayer.
Tuesday, March 8 — “God’s Will and Decision Making” We don’t so much follow a master blueprint that God has for our lives. Instead, God gives us free will and we have to learn to make good decisions. We’ll explore some spiritual principles that can guide us in this area of our lives.
Tuesday, March 15 — “The Challenge of Forgiveness” As we have been forgiven, so we are challenged to forgive each other. We’ll dig into Fr. Albert’s seven points about forgiveness.

and We Need Your Support!
We are medical missionaries from St. Patrick, St. John Neuman, and St Michael’s Parishes. Last year, guided by the Holy Spirit, we saw 900 patients in 4 days. This year we are expanding our impact with primary care, dental, optometry , and physical therapy. We partner
with our brothers and sisters of San Antonio de Padua Parish in rural Central America to provide essential medical services.
But we can’t do it alone…. we need your prayers, volunteers, and financial support.
