Great Leadership What do you consider to be the qualities of a good leader? Our readings today focus on leadership with both good and bad examples. The first reading ad-dresses Jewish priests who have compromised their rituals by offering second-rate sacrifices. In contrast, the second reading summarizes the self-giving efforts of Paul and his partners in their ministry to the church in Thessalonica. And in the Gospel, Jesus critiques the Pharisees because they have become focused on the prestige of their office instead of their service to the people and God. St. Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians offer an intimate glimpse into St. Paul’s love for the people and the powerful conversion they experienced as a community. Today’s excerpt says:
With such affection for you, we were determined to share with you
not only the gospel of God, but our very selves as well,
so dearly beloved had you become to us. We see that St. Paul’s efforts were driven by gen-uine love for the people. It wasn’t just a job or an as-signment, but a deeply internalized desire for these people to experience the love of Jesus. St. Paul’s leadership rises out of a conviction to improve the people he is leading no matter what the cost to him-self. And that is a critical difference between good leadership and bad leadership. The Gospel ends with Jesus saying:
The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled;
but whoever humbles himself will be exalted." In closing let’s challenge ourselves this week to make those around us better. Whether we are a team captain or a benchwarmer; a CEO or a mail clerk; a stay at home parent or the youngest sibling, let’s focus less on our own success and more on lov-ing those God has placed in front of us.
Sincerely, Dan Milani, Director of Adult Faith Formation
P.S. If you’re looking to go deeper as a great leader check out the book Virtuous Leadership on the book kiosk in the church vestibule.

Pope Francis has invited every parish around the world to open
its doors for 24 hours to be with the Lord so that the faithful
might encounter Jesus Christ anew in Eucharistic Adoration.
It is intended to be a time of reflection and prayer and a chance to
rediscover; or perhaps discover for the first time, the great mercy
at the heart of the Catholic Faith.
At St. Patrick Parish we will begin these 24 hours after the
12:00noon Mass on Friday December 8th.
Adoration will continue until the start of the 9:00AM Mass on
Saturday, December 9th.
We will pray, in communion with all of the Saints, asking the
Lord, “make our hearts like yours.”
