St. Patrick’s is uniquely a sign of God’s loving presence. It was here when the miners left for the gold country, it served the Irish immigrants, withstood the great fire and earthquake of 1906, continued to serve the Irish, then the Spanish-speaking, now the Filipino community, the numerous tourists and conventioneers and always the business world by which it is surrounded. Now it exists in a neighborhood undergoing redevelopment. Un- changed in the midst of change, it still repeats for all the message of Him who is the resurrection and the life. Please Pray for our Holy Father’s Intentions for November General Intention: That priests who experience difficulties may find comfort in their suffering, support in their doubts, and confirmation in their fidelity. Missionary Intention: That as fruit of the continental mission, Latin American Churches may send missionaries to other Churches.

November 10, 2013 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Year C

2 Mc 7:1-2,9-14; Ps 17:1,5-6,8,15; 2 Thes 2:16-3:5; Lk 20:27-38 or 20:27,34-38 In response to an attempt to ridicule his teaching about life after death, Jesus again proclaims a resurrection from the dead (3), that life is indeed stronger than death itself (1). This is our eternal consolation and hope (2). Then will our joy be truly fulfilled (Ps).

Treasures From Our Tradition In the seventeenth century, English Catholics, many of them wealthy and well educated, looked to the American colonies as a place to regain a measure of religious freedom. In Ireland, the so-called penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the popula-tion by denying the majority political and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quak-ers, and others. There were acts forbidding “mixed marriage” or sending children “beyond the seas” for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse. In 1793 the situation began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecution would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were repealed until by 1829 freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligi-ble for honors, and until the 1920s when the Republic was formed, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all citizens.

The Resurrection of the Dead In the Apostles’ Creed we proclaim that we “believe in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.” Today’s readings invite us to explore these beliefs. The passage from Second Maccabees makes it clear that belief in the resurrection of the dead was not born in Christian-ity, but in a time preceding Jesus’ coming. The martyred broth-ers proclaim their conviction that God will raise them to new life. No threat of death can bring them to break one of their reli-gious laws. Death of their bodies is no death at all, compared to the spiritual death that would result from transgressing the law. The silly riddle about marriage put to Jesus in the Gospel gives him an opportunity to speak of the “coming age,” when no one will be given in marriage, and no one will be liable to death. Jesus too stresses how ancient is this teaching, attributing this belief to Moses, who knew that God is the God of the liv-ing.

Reflecting on God’s Word We have many hungers in life, and sometimes we can over-indulge in response to them. Still, one that never goes away is our hunger to be connected. We desperately shun living in iso-lation. For many it is marriage that feeds that hunger, but so do family or friendships or the simple attention one finds in a com-munity of faith or a collection of back yards. They all seem to feed our yearning for deep life, even when we are inattentive or preoccupied. A person of faith might even say that these com-munities are God being faithful to us. This week’s Gospel is one that turns the tables on us. It snares us in our own curiosity about what heaven will be like, and whether we will know the ones we love and be with our spouses, and what if we’ve been married seven times? And that’s just where Jesus turns the tables and says it’s about rela-tionships and not about bodies to be with; it’s about our deepest hungers to be united, even beyond marriage and friends and neighbors and communities of any sort. That’s what resurrec-tion is about, Jesus replies, and then reminds us one more time (as if we’d been deaf all the other times) that God has promised it and God is faithful. God “is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive,” is how Luke has Jesus saying it (Luke 20:38). In other words, all of our relationships of loving and caring, especially those of marriage, are but hints of real and full life, and the best is yet to come. So what you’ve found in marriage, even if you’ve been married seven times, is just the beginning.

Perspective We must often draw the comparison of time and eternity. This is the remedy of all our troubles. How small will the pre-sent moment appear when we enter that great ocean!

Breaking Bread Missal 2014 On December 1st, the First Sunday of Ad-vent, we will replace our 2013 Heritage Missals with the new 2014 Breaking Bread Missal. We would be very grateful if you could share a sac-rificial gift of $100 of your hard-earned money, especially during these difficult times. As an

acknowledgement of your generous $100 tax-deductible contri-bution, your name will be printed on a bookplate and glued to the inside front or back cover of the Missal. If $100 is not pos-sible, any amount, no matter how small, would be greatly ap-preciated. Look for envelopes in the weeks to come.

Communion in the Home Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are available to bring Communion to those who are unable to attend Mass. Please call the office at 415-421-3730 for more information.

Looking for Lay Ministers The proclamation of the Word of God at Masses and other Liturgies is one of the sources of faith, wisdom, and understanding God and Jesus have given to the Church. Because of its importance, the Church takes great care in en-suring that the Spoken Word is proclaimed with

dignity and reverence. As a parish, we try our very best to ful-fill these expectations. The source and summit of our life as a people of God are the gifts of Christ’s Body and Blood, the Eucharist, and the com-munity gathered to share in this Eucharist. Over time, the Church has seen the need for Lay Faithful to assist with the distribution of Communion at Masses and other Liturgies. As well, Eucharistic Ministers assist the parish by bringing Com-munion to people who are unable to attend Mass. If you’re looking for a way to serve your parish, or if you’ve ever wanted to be a lay minister and serve during Mass, now is your chance. Please pick up a sign-up form in the back of the church. Training will begin shortly.

Choir Members Wanted!! Liturgical music is a specialized ministry, which requires not only basic music-reading skills, listening skills and per-forming skills, but also a deep respect for the liturgy (i.e. the Mass), a willingness to grow in spiritual faith, leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate as a team. Even though this is a volunteer, non-paid position, it requires commitment, persever-ance, and a sense of responsibility and self-initiative to partici-pate successfully in the music ministry. Cooperation with the Music Coordinator and other music ministers is a must. All adults interested in joining the St. Patrick Adult Choir are encouraged to audition. Please pick up an application form in the back of the church and someone will contact you.

Calling All Young Adults!! All young adults sixteen years of age or older are invited to join the St. Patrick Young Adult Choir. Have fun and make new friends while serving your parish in this character-building ministry. Please see any of the members after Mass or call the office at 415-421-3730 during normal business hours for more information.

Sponsors Needed for the 9-Day Misa de Gallo December 16 - 24, 2012 at 6:00 a.m.

As the liturgical year winds down with Ad-vent right around the corner, we are looking for kind-hearted and generous people who would like to share some of their God-given blessings by sponsoring one of the pre-dawn Misa de Gallo Masses. Donations will go toward the festive and joyful fellowship each day featuring hot refreshments. Please bring your contribution to the office or give it to one of the parish staff by Thursday, December 12th, so your donation may be acknowledged in the Misa de Gallo program. Thank you for sharing the joy of your blessings and your Christmas spirit with your fellow parishioners!!

Living God’s Word As we go through life we’d like to know just whom we are going to spend eternity with and what it’s going to be like. The truth is that none of us knows. Maybe the best we can do at this time is love those around us now, and let God take care of our future.
