During this year we have been busy reviewing services and beginning to draft our future strategy. I am excited by this process as an opportunity to focus on enhancing services to benefit patients and families but also explore other avenues to reach out to more people. One thing is for certain; we’re not standing still.

I’m delighted to finally announce that our eleventh store is being launched and we should be opening our doors in Kempshott soon. This store has been a long-time target for us and we hope it will contribute

significant funding to support families. This is the second shop we’ve opened in the last twelve months and it’s great to see our venture in Four Marks exceeding all expectations. I must thank the local community for supporting us and making us feel so welcome.

Our fundraising events have kicked off and have been really well supported, having raised substantial amounts for the Hospice. It was a real pleasure to welcome so many of you to our Sunflower Celebration at the start of June and I appreciated meeting families returning to the Hospice.

In June it was also an honour to recognise some of our long serving volunteers, some of whom have dedicated over 25 years to support us. One highlight was to accompany Alfredo and Eileen Lavorgna to the Place to be Proud of Awards at the Haymarket Theatre in Basingstoke. It was amazing to see them recognised in the top three of Basingstoke’s volunteers of the year. Thank you once again for your continued support; through this, you make us who we are.

I am sure you will be aware of the staffing challenges facing all care providers across the country and sadly we at St. Michael’s Home Care are no exception. With 110,000 vacancies in the sector at any one time, it is a very real issue.

To tackle this, the company is undergoing some massive changes to support our staff and to ensure we are offering the highest quality care, thereby also meaning we can keep generating vital funds for the Hospice.

We are moving to an exciting new paperless system with all of the team receiving mobile phones to run the new software, and we have partnered with ‘The HR Dept,’ based near

In April, we were delighted to welcome our new Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Jason Spendelow, to our team. Since joining us, Jason has enhanced what was previously known as our bereavement service and after making some exciting changes we are proud to launch our Family Support Team. You can read more about the team on pages 19 and 20.

Jason and his team provide a range of support services to patients and family members. At St. Michael’s Hospice patients and family members will now be able to access a four-tiered system of interventions that seeks to offer the least obtrusive support, ranging from General Support (i.e. general

RetailUpdate

The first quarter of 2019 has been a time of change for us and the focus has been very much on our people.

We have recruited a manager for our Kempshott store, Gavin Page, who was Acting Store Manager in Chineham and an Assistant Manager. With three leavers to replace across Hook, Brighton Hill, and the Furniture Store, and a new manager for Chineham, we are excited to welcome some new staff to join us in our retail stores.

We have also recruited a Distribution Centre Manager, Sue Foyle, who was Manager at our Overton Store, so we are backfilling her position. I am looking forward to Sue starting in the Distribution Centre so we can improve efficiencies, quality of items and increase our income from recycling.

Our sales from eBay have been steady with approximately £1,000 additional income at the time of writing and Gift Aid has started strongly this year which is vital to help us reach our profit target.

Finally, I am very pleased to announce that we have now signed and completed on the lease for our new shop in Buckingham Parade, Kempshott and our contractors are currently on site working on the electrics, décor, flooring and more. We will be open in July and look forward to seeing you in our eleventh shop soon.

ROUND UP FOR YOUR HOSPICE?

We are always looking at ways to increase income for our Hospice

so we are asking customers if they would like to round up their payment

for items they are buying to the nearest pound. Thanks to the kind

generosity of our customers this has so far brought in over £900 and

should continue to grow as our retail teams get into the habit of asking

everyone if they would like to “round up for our Hospice”.

Eileen and Alfredo Lavorgna were nominated for the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ Award at the ‘Destination Basingstoke Place to be Proud of Awards’ held at the Haymarket Theatre and they made the shortlist of finalists! Well done to you both! Alfredo and Eileen are pictured on page 1.

Eileen and Alfredo do so much for St. Michael’s Hospice and the local community. They have volunteered for 19 years as fundraisers but their role has always gone beyond this. They grow hundreds of plants and sell them at events throughout Basingstoke with all money raised donated to the Hospice. They also do House to

House collections and organise the collecting units at local shops and organisations, however, no amount of money could be placed on how treasured they are and how much of an asset they are to the Hospice. They are well recognised amongst staff, volunteers and supporters too with their friendly and helpful attitude.

Volunteering

This year we are celebrating the 5th anniversary of the association between Odiham Cottage Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospice to provide a volunteer-led befriending service in the Odiham, Hook, Hartley Wintney and Old Basing areas.

Since the introduction of the service, our volunteers have made over 4,500 visits to patients who are lonely or isolated as well as being unwell. Befrienders make an enormous difference in people’s lives but the relationship goes both ways with both sides gaining so much from the experience. To celebrate the anniversary of the Befriending Service we held an anniversary party at Odiham Cottage Hospital on Monday 1st July and look forward to sharing with you pictures from the event in our next issue of InFormation.

The amazing volunteers who support St. Michael’s Hospice.

National Volunteering Week is the ideal time for St. Michael’s Hospice to once again thank the amazing team of people who support the Hospice in so many ways through volunteering.

762 volunteers give their time within the Hospice, in our Retail Stores, out in the community as Befrienders, and at our Fundraising activities and events. Their hard-work and commitment really does underpin all the services the Hospice provides to patients, families and supporters.

We held our 2019 Long Service Awards in June at the Hospice, presenting 32 amazing volunteers with their certificate and their badge and afterwards enjoying an afternoon tea.

What a lovely afternoon it was celebrating their commitment and loyalty to the Hospice. Thank you from all the staff for your continuing contribution in making this Hospice a wonderful place for our patients and families. This year, awards went to:

Our SupportersMany of the runners at this year’s Basingstoke Run were happy to tell us why they were out supporting the Hospice. We thought you might enjoy some of their comments.

By T, Hospice volunteer, aged 15

If I had more time, maybe I’d appreciate things more. The smell of the air after it’s

rained; the sound of the birds waking up in the morning, or the taste of cold water on a hot day. If I weren’t so hurried, trying my best to rush through life to the next thing,

maybe I’d be happier. Time is so obscure. If you had to explain time to somebody who had never heard of it, what would you say? How would you explain that you only had so many seconds in a day, but you never

stop to think that, as each one passes, you’ll never see it again? How would you

explain that you always seem to be wishing time away, looking forward to something

or other, and never stop to appreciate the time that you have right now?

If I had more time, maybe I’d appreciate things more. Or maybe I’d appreciate them less. If I had an unlimited amount

of time, I would never stop to think about what’s happening in the moment, because

there would always be other moments.

There will never be more moments. I have to love all of them as they pass.

Trusts Update

Fundraising Update

Trusts and other grant making institutions remain an important source of income for St. Michael’s Hospice (North Hampshire). We currently enjoy the support of a number of charitable trusts. Some of our benefactors have been helping us since the beginning, others have donated more recently.

The last few months have been very busy thanks to all our amazing supporters and over the next few pages your fundraising team are delighted to recognise some of the fundraising activities that have been happening across our community, with our corporate partners and our Hospice events.

We are currently looking for funds to purchase a Bladder Scanner and an ECG Machine for our In-Patient Unit, to ensure that we keep our patients as comfortable as possible during their stay here at the Hospice. If you are a trustee or representative of a Trust and feel you would able to contribute to these pieces of equipment, or would like to find out more about our work, please contact Emma Knill on 01256 848849 or email [email protected]

We are extremely privileged to have such wonderful support and on behalf of all here at the Hospice, our patients, their families and carers, thank you so much for all you do for us, we simply could not continue to provide the care and support we do without you.

This is YOUR fundraising team and we are here to assist and support you in whatever way we can. We love getting involved so if you have an event

Over the past quarter, we have received a total of two donations from KatCanDo and the Linbury Trust;

FARLEIGH WALLOP WOODLAND WALKWoodland Walk, our first event of the year, was held within the grounds of the prestigious Portsmouth Estate and saw over 500 people walking with friends, family and work colleagues in memory of someone special and to raise vital funds for the Hospice. Walkers were greeted back at Home Farm Barn with a well-deserved cream tea and hot drink, kindly donated by Lavazza. We are delighted to inform you that we have exceeded our target by £3,000, raising over £17,000 to date.

BASINGSTOKE RUN The sun was shining on Down Grange as over 700 runners gathered for this year’s Basingstoke Run. Runners of all ages and experiences took part in both our 5 and 10K routes, with a fantastic turnout from local running clubs and businesses, along with families and friends. To date, we have raised over £19,000, however, if you haven’t already done so, please don’t forget to send in your remaining sponsorship money as soon as possible.

SUNFLOWER CELEBRATIONThis year saw hundreds of our supporters visiting the Hospice gardens to attend our newly formatted Sunflower Celebration. We unveiled our supporters’ field of bright, dedicated sunflowers in the beaming sunshine, poignant symbols of remembrance. Our supporters listened to music sung by Ooh Mama Ladies Choir, browsed around our Hospice stalls, and enjoyed a range of delicious cakes and cream tea. Overall, the Sunflower Appeal and Celebration has currently raised over £17,000.

THANK YOU TO...

• KatCanDo have given us a wonderful donation of £1,991 to purchase a new defibrillator for in our In-Patient Unit.

Thank you so much to everyone who invited us to come to your local community group so we could talk to you more about the Hospice and its services. It has been lovely meeting so many new faces over the last few months and sharing our knowledge about the Hospice. Here are some of the wonderful ways you have all been fundraising on our behalf.

Thank you to Alton Choral Society for a lovely evening on Good Friday with your Easter Concert and for the generosity during the retiring collection for the Hospice. In total £686 was collected, a truly wonderful sum.

We had a great day on Friday 31st May both in The Malls and The Chineham Shopping Centre for our Yellow Day. The sun nearly appeared and fun was had by everyone who took part in the exciting games we had. On the day we raised the fantastic amount of £874, we would like to thank everyone who came along to support us.

Alison’s Wonderland very kindly ran another raffle in support of the Hospice which raised £100.

Rosie & Rosemarie organised a fantastic evening when they held their Quiz Night in April. It was great to see the venue packed, people excitingly bidding during the auction and so many winners on the raffle! In total £1,764 was raised for St. Michael’s Hospice and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

A big thank you to Hazel Feighery who organised a Karaoke Competition which was hosted at the Kestrel, the King of Wessex and the Winkle in Basingstoke. The total raised was £2,305 for the Hospice!

Bastion Gaming Club held a delicious Curry Night in May and raised £200 for the Hospice, thank you so much everyone and we hope you enjoyed your meal!

Kingsclere Coffee Morning had another hugely successful event, raising over £500 in just a couple of hours. Plenty of stalls were browsed and lots of tea and coffee was enjoyed by the residents of Kingsclere.

During the month of June, our wonderful volunteers were walking the streets of North Hampshire collecting money for the Hospice with our House to House collection. The total raised this year is still being calculated, but we would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign and gave so generously.

We had a lovely day at the Hartley Wintney Festival once again this year on Saturday 8th June. Thank you so much to the Rotary Club of Hart for selecting the Hospice as the charity to benefit from the proceeds of the day. In addition to their donation, we also raised £352 through our own stalls!

Thank you to everyone who has been dropping off their milk bottle tops to Christ Church in Chineham, who have kindly

been recycling them on our behalf. We received a donation of £306 from the recycled tops, which is brilliant!

A massive thank you and congratulations to our London Marathon runners this year, Darren Chilcott, Nicky Dale and Keith Day, who between them have raised over £6,160 which is fantastic.

We have had some very brave supporters take on a skydive for the Hospice this year and would like to thank them all for their fantastic support. Lisa Rickman took on a skydive in memory of her mum, Jacqueline. Tracy, Carly and Frankie jumped to mark the 20th anniversary of Jim Skillet's passing. Lastly Emma, Charlie, Alex and Hollie took on the challenge in memory of Matt Edgson. All together they have raised £5000, which is amazing.

As part of their charity badge at 1st Sherfield Brownies, Jessica and Megan decided to fundraise for the Hospice with a bake sale. Together they baked up a tasty selection of goodies to sell to their friends, parents and leaders

at Brownies, the cakes went down very well and they raised an amazing £62. Well done, girls!

We received a generous donation from Steventon Parochial Church Council of £1,470 raised from the opening of Garden House to the public for a coffee morning and opportunity to see the beautiful bluebells in the woods. Thank you to Mr Pilcher to allowing this to take place.

We would like to announce the formation of our family Support Team which replaces the former bereavement service.

Our services include social work, Complementary Therapy, Chaplaincy as well as Counselling and Clinical Psychology. The new family support team, led by Clinical Psychologist Jason Spendelow, offers care to all Hospice patients, their family members and carers. It brings together existing staff members into one team and will enable us to provide more comprehensive and joined up care to our community. The team is supported by Hayleigh McGill, the Family Support Administrator.

One of the ways the Family Support Team provides assistance to bereaved families is through our talking therapies service. We have trained counsellors available to support families through the grieving process. Our counsellors are registered with the appropriate

professional bodies and will work with families in a confidential setting. To

make an appointment, family members simply need to request a referral to the Family Support Team service. We are

supported by listening volunteers.

The Chaplaincy Service offers listening, emotional and spiritual support for

patients and their families and friends on the In-Patient Unit and in the community. We are there to explore questions that arise at a time of terminal illness, or just to have a chat about things that matter to our patients and their families. We are

available in a totally non-judgmental way for people of all beliefs.

The Complementary Therapy team offer treatments to patients on the In-Patient Unit and treatments may also be offered to support family

members. Complementary Therapy clinics are run from the Turner Centre

where appointments are also provided for outpatients, their carers and for

bereaved carers. Treatments offered include Massage, Aromatherapy,

Reflexology, Reiki, Acupuncture, Indian Head Massage, and Deep Relaxation.

Social Workers offer support to patients, their families and friends during their stay at the Hospice. This can include support with accessing benefits, signposting to other agencies and supporting referrals to statutory services. If a patient is being discharged from the Hospice we can, alongside the patient, their family and our multi-disciplinary team colleagues,

assess their needs for discharge. We regularly visit patients after their

discharge from the Hospice and provide ongoing support in the community.

An Inspiration...

It was November 2007. My brother James, at the very young age of 33, was first diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. With this devastating news and weeks of disbelief, James had to be brave and stay strong, not only for himself but for us and his three boys Jack, Billy and Charlie who were only 11, 10 and 9 years of age.

Treatments

James had to travel to Southampton for the start of his six week programme of radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy sessions. He was also under the care of the palliative team at the Basingstoke Hospice who were very supportive with James and the family as a whole.

Throughout his treatment, James used to say on a regular basis that he would never go into St. Michael’s Hospice as once that you’re in there, you know you’re going to die, albeit he did used to attend the Turner Centre on many occasions for their complementary treatments. Aromatherapy and Reiki treatments helped James to relax and help him take his mind off of the stress and pressures of dealing with his illness. He really enjoyed these and it also helped having staff that were very caring and supportive for James and his family.

2008-14This roller-coaster time period seemed to have a lot more downs than ups but with the persistence of the further treatments, plus shunts and the support of all, James managed to surpass the time frame life expectancy given to him by another three years. In this time, James got to see his three boys turn into fine young men and also to become a grandfather to a beautiful little girl called Willow. He got to fly a plane at Popham airfield on his 40th birthday and had an invitation to attend his last game in the Stretford End at his beloved Manchester United. Emma Austen

St. Michael’s Hospice

In May 2014, James became very ill, losing his speech and the use of the right hand side of his body. He was living at home with his parents caring for his every need when he took a turn for the worse and had a massive seizure. He was admitted into St. Michael’s Hospice. As a family we were really concerned, scared, and all had the same thoughts as James; we just presumed that the Hospice would be a morbid, horrible place to die.

How Wrong We Were...The Hospice was amazing and we just felt at ease straight away. James was so relaxed as it was more like a hotel than a hospital. The staff were exceptional and the care was second to none. They catered to his every need, even taking James out into the gardens in the sunshine with all his family to celebrate my birthday. The chef had even baked me a cake, the staff had got me a bottle of wine and James had a couple of cheeky Bacardi and Cokes! To spend it with my brother, my hero, was the best birthday I will ever have. James was in the Hospice from May through to July and, after having another seizure, he sadly passed away peacefully in his sleep not long after with his Mum, Auntie Helen and myself by his side. I always remember sitting with James and saying “one day, I’m going to work here" and here I am today, a proud member of staff at St. Michael’s Hospice. I really love my job and get to put back in what we had received for James and to work with fantastic, amazing staff, families and patients.

CopingThe Hospice have really helped me cope with the loss of my brother and I’m sure that every day he’s looking over me and feeling very proud. It has been five years since James passed away, it is still very hard and emotional to come to terms with on certain occasions but we stay strong.

James's boys have grown into very handsome, respectful young men with great futures in front of them. They always acknowledge how, if it wasn’t for their dad James, they wouldn’t be the men they are today.

We also get great comfort in seeing the uncanny resemblance, and sometimes annoying characteristics, of James in my eldest son Jacob.
