OUR PARISH SCHOOL
Second Sunday of Advent Page 3
One of the greatest gifts you can give is your time.
VOLUNTEER!
Dear Friends in Christ,
St. John the Baptist is reintroduced in today's gospel. The
Bible tells us that Isaiah prophesized about his coming when he
said:
"A voice of one crying out in the desert, Prepare the way of the
Lord, Make straight His paths."
The Baptist was not a typical religious leader of his time. And,
in fact, like Jesus, he confronted the established religious
leaders without mincing words:
"You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming
wrath?”
In calling the Pharisees and Sadducees vipers, John exposed
their true nature. A viper is a poison-ous snake. Its fangs, in
which its poison is stored, fold up against the roof of its mouth
when not in use. Their strike is deadly, releasing just the right
amount of venom to kill each of their prey. St. John was offering a
baptism of repentance and he was convinced that these religious
leaders had no sense they needed to repent. Like vipers, they
preyed on others instead of helping them to come to God and, in the
process, distanced themselves from the Lord.
But he also offered them a remedy for it was God's will that all
sinners come to Him. St. John told them, "Produce good fruit as
evidence of your repentance.” In others words, turn from your
predatory and self-serving ways and instead, practice works of
mercy in imitation of our heavenly Father's mercy.
In this Advent season, all of us have room to move from
self-serving to service of others. It seems easier to do this in
this traditional season of giving. Even though the season does not
last all year, that spirit of service and charity can. We can
decide to bear good fruit all year long.
Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Gregg

Confirmation Class Project for Pinellas Hope
Our Confirmation class will again be preparing personal "kit"
bags for those folks entering and residing at Pinellas Hope. We
strive to provide 200 bags containing an assortment of care items.
If you are a traveler and have a few hotel-sized items such as
shampoo, conditioner, bar soap or body wash, even complimentary
toothbrushes and/or small toothpaste tubes, any or all of these
items would be much appreciated by our students. Items can be
brought to the Cenacle on Sunday during Coffee and Donuts or
directly to our parish office during regular office hours. Our
project day will occur on Dec. 14th, so items dropped off at St.
Michael's before that date would be warmly welcomed. Thank you for
your generosity in advance.
Do you play the keyboard, piano or another instrument?
We would love to have you join us at the 9:30
Family Mass every first Sunday of
the month. We practice on Mondays from 6:00
to 7:00 in Room #4. Please prayerfully consider using your
musical talents to wor-ship the Lord at the 9:30 family mass.

interested, email Vicky O'Hara at
