Fr. Jerry’s Corner – November 3, 2019 – Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Bishop Hartmayer will be with us in two weeks to dedicate our beautifully renovated worship space. I am so very grateful for all your positive feedback on the work. You may not believe this but in the past, I’ve always been somewhat conservative, somewhat hesitant when it comes to spending money. Being a good steward of the financial resources entrusted to the faith community has always been important to me. But even more important than spending our money wisely, more important than a having a beautiful Church, is having a vibrant faith community that gathers in the beautiful Church for the purpose of building up God’s Kingdom.

To be the spiritual leader of such a vibrant faith community has truly been a blessing for me. I am so very grateful to all of you who make this blessing a reality. However, now that the physical plant looks so good, I think it is time to focus more on the spiritual growth and renewal that should be an ongoing part of the life of any Christian. It is this spiritual growth that is essential to our parish. I mean, the most beautiful worship space in the world is of little value, if it is not a home base for disciples who are filled with the love of Jesus Christ.

Being a good steward of the spiritual resources of our faith community is even more a priority than the responsible use of our financial resources. So, I am asking you to consider these three areas of being a good steward and how they might be reflected in your life:

Time: How much time each week do you commit to growing your relationship with Christ by spending time in prayer? I am always happy to give you some direction in your prayer life.

Talent: How are you using your talents, skills, abilities and knowledge to benefit our faith community? I am always happy to help individuals with this discernment.

Treasure: Have you prayerfully decided and committed to giving God a percentage of your income or is your offering to the Church more haphazard? The Biblical norm that many Protestants follow is the tithe – giving the first 10% of your “fruits” back to God.

God is the origin of all our gifts. A good steward receives God’s gifts gratefully, tends to them in a responsible and accountable manner, and shares them by actively using all their gifts as a disciple to build the Kingdom of God here and now.

11th Annual Red Mass

The 11TH Annual Red Mass will be held in St. Mary’s Chapel at the Pastoral

Center, 2170 E. Victory Drive, Friday, November 8th at noon. A reception will

follow in Boland Hall.

This event is open to all attorneys, judges, clerks, law students and others

engaged in the legal profession. One does not need to be a member of the Guild,

nor Catholic to attend.

The Red Mass is celebrated annually in the Catholic Church for judges, lawyers, law school professors,

law students, and government officials. The Mass requests guidance from the Holy Spirit for all who seek

justice, and offers the opportunity to reflect on what Catholics believe is the God-given power and

responsibility of all in the legal profession.

Originating in Paris in 1215, the Mass is referred to as the “Red” Mass referring to the color of the vestments worn. Red is chosen to symbolize tongues of fire (the Holy Spirit) that descended on the 12 Apostles on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

Dear Friend in Christ,

The next National Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), is scheduled for the weekeud of 10 November 2019 {unless an alternate date has been selected by a particular diocese). The AMS receives no funding from the U.S. Government or the U.S. Military, has no parishes for a ,veekly in-pevv collection, and rnust rely principally on private donations to fund an annual opPrating budget of over $8.2 million.

Established by Saint John Paul II in 1985, the AMS is responsible for providing the full range of pastoral ministries available in all other U.S. dioceses to those serving in the United States Armed Services, enrolled in U.S. fVlilitary Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and for the families of these populations. In other words, the AtvfS is responsible for the pastoral care of men, women, and children from all U.S. dioceses, who hail from all 50 States and U.S. Territories - including members of your mvn parish.

Tam grateful to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for its approval of the National Collection taken in most dioceses every three years, the first in November 20'13, and again in 2016. Funds received from the 2013 and 2016 National Collections provided the means necessary for this Archdiocese to continue to provide the same pastoral care readily available to the almost 1.8 million AfvfS faithful spread across the~ globe who Sl• rvc~ and who face constant transition and uncertainty. The funds also made possible several new and important initiatives, including the first-ever Catholic military marriage enrichment retreat and widespread certification of catechists at their installations; to begin to build an endovvment \Vith a long-term goal oi' assuring a self-sustaining source of funding; and to continue to underwrite the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program which provides priests to serve in dioceses across the U.S., and to serve as full-time Catholic military chaplains.

Please help me continue to provide priests for the Church and the military chaplaincy and to minister to the Catholic military men and women, and Lheir families, who are part of this global Archdiocese- parishioners andjamiliesfrom your diocese- vvith a donation to the 2019 Triennial National Collection for the AMS,

With simtiments of unwavering gratitude, I remain

Sincerely in Christ,

~)q~ (The Most Reverend) Timothy P. Broglio, .J.C.D. Archbishop for the Military Services. USA
