WORSHIP THE CROSS OF JESUS

The perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sponsor a New Church Paver

The construction of our new church is well underway and is expected to be completed in late 2021. A portion of the side-walk leading up to the new church has been set aside for spe-cial engraved pavers where parishioners and friends of our parish can create a lasting memory of their support for our new church.

4” x 8” and 8” x 8” pavers are available for purchase for you to have your special prayer, your family name, or other message engraved including religious artwork. Orders can be placed online at our parish website, www.st-mattihas.net, or using the order form available in the narthex and online.

If you plan to purchase multiple pavers, please use a separate order form for each paver or order online where all pavers can be grouped under a single order.

If you are interested in ordering multiple pavers with text that spans across them, please contact Tom Mayhew at [email protected].

Our deep gratitude to parishioners and visitors for

your continue support to the ongoing work of Christ at St. Matthias.

OUR NEW CHURCH As of late August, our general contractor, Westfall, continues to make good progress on construction of our

new church, St. Vincent de Paul building, and pavilion. They have made great progress on erecting the steel structure for the building and have started to erect the steel for the SVdP building. The main emphasis for the church now is the completion of the overhead steel work and the installation of the roof joists. Father and the Building Committee have a meeting with the stained glass window company this week to review the designs and make any final updates prior to starting production. Once the designs are complete, we will receive prints for display. Your support to help KEEP EVERYONE SAFE during construction is very important and much appreciated. DO NOT ENTER THE CONSTRUCTION AREA including any of the cleared areas of our site. This is for your safety!! While we did meet our financial goals for our campaign, thanks to the generous support of many parishioners, our parish will be taking on a sizable monthly payment. If you are still making payments on a pledge, please continue to do so until fulfilled. Any additional gifts to our campaign will also be appreciated. If you would like to sponsor an element of our new church, we have an updated list of items that are available in the narthex. The requested donations for items range from $2,500 to $100,000. Please contact the parish office for more information. Please pray for the safe construction of our new church and for minimal weather delays. Contact our campaign team through Tom Condon at 281- 382- 8097 for more information about the campaign or Jerry Strenk at 936-449-6686 with Building Committee questions.

DIOCESAN SERVICES FUND 2020

The 2020 Archdiocesan DSF campaign is underway in the Archdiocese with this year’s theme of "Bring Your Greatest Gifts to the

Lord". The Cardinal has set our parishes goal for this year at $65,000. As of July 16, our parish has contributed $44,616.99 toward pledges of $56,641.99. Your pledge can be dropped in the collection box, inside the church office or mailed directly to the Archdiocese. Please confirm that your pledge card indicates our parish name. Please pray about how you can support this important campaign that benefits so many needy in the Galveston - Houston area.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus say to us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” The challenge is to let go so God can lead us.

We gratefully thank St. Matthias for their generosity in helping us carry out our mission in serving the less fortunate. Monthly needed items: canned sweet potatoes, ham, sugar, coffee, bar soap, rice

CCE REGISTRATION CCE registration is open for the upcoming 2020-2021 year. Forms can be found on the website as well as the narthex, church office and RE office. Our priority first and foremost is the safety of our children, parents and catechist. We would like all to stay active in their faith while practicing social distancing. With that in mind, it has been decided that this year our K-12 Faith For-mation & Youth Ministry will be remote learning with online access to books. If you do not have computer access to receive material online, packets and books will be availa-ble the beginning of October with lesson plans.

FIRST COMMUNION Congratulations to the children that

made their First Communion on Saturday, August 29.

Ignacio Albarrán Christopher Lazo Leslie Albarrán Sophia Loredo Elissa Balderas Javier Manjarrez Danna Barrios Lillian Manjarrez Osvaldo Becerra Yaritza Manjarrez Diego Flores Raul Meléndez Jasmine Flores Saul Meléndez Messi Gallegos Marianna Meléndez Christian García Jayleen Núñez Hugo García Janet Núñez Monica García Jasmine Querol Ángel González Valeria Quintero Jeidy Jiménez Kareena Sunsesara May they always stay close to Jesus as on their First Communion day. There will be two more Communion Masses: September 12 and September 19. We are happy that they will finally be able to come to the Lord’s table. These Masses are following the same protocol as the weekend Masses. The Masses will be livestreamed because spacing is limited.

We are praying for you and your families.

Comfort us, O Lord, for we are like your disciples on the storm-tossed seas, unsettled by what lies ahead.

We turn to You, our Healer and Guide, to still our hearts in our time of need and hear our prayer:

Heal those who are sick with the coronavirus and protect the elderly and most vulnerable.

Give strength to all who tend to our health and wisdom to researchers who work toward a cure.

Open our eyes and hearts, as you did during Hurricane Harvey, that we may look beyond our immediate needs to care for others who need help.

Through the Holy Spirit, guide our leaders to make wise decisions for the welfare of all the people they serve.

Grant eternal rest to those who have died from the virus.

May Mary, Our Mother, who has heard our pleas in the storms of our lives, intercede to her Son, that we may find healing and a prompt end to this illness.

Mary, Star of the Sea, pray for us.

Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior, heal us. Amen.

PRAYER FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS

God of everlasting goodness, you sent your Son among us to bring healing, peace, and reconciliation to our weary world.

Be with all health care workers and their assistants in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic.

As they continue Jesus’ ministry of care, renew them in mind, body, and spirit. Keep them safe from infection and illness, and may Christ’s healing presence flow through them as they serve those entrusted to their care.

We ask this in his name, Christ the healer, who is Lord forever and ever. Amen. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

In order for your student to receive credit for the 2020-2021 CCE year, they will be required to turn in all assignments that are given to the RE office. Please make sure we always have your current contact information. Most of the communication will be done through email.

Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself

wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
