ANOINTING OF THE SICK

OCTOBER 22 AND 23

A communal Anointing of the Sick will be

celebrated this weekend, October 22 and 23 during Mass.

This sacrament is intended for the strengthening and healing

of those who are ill, elderly or about to undergo a surgery. It

is a normal part of Catholic life and not just for those who

are dying. If you would like to take part in this Sacrament of

Healing please take the pin being offered by our greeters and

have a seat that is toward the middle aisle of the pew. Shawl

Ministry members will be handing out pins. They will also

be available after mass to distribute prayers shawls to those

who wish to receive them.

OCTOBER 23, 2016

FROM FR. FRAN

This weekend we will celebrate

the Sacrament of the Sick at our

Masses. From the beginnings of the

church, communities have gathered

around those who are ill and, with a

priest to lead, they have lifted up

prayer for the sick, invoked the

presence of the Holy Spirit and

anointed them with the blessed oil. In

this sacramental encounter we

believe that God has showered grace

and strength on the sick person.

The point of this anointing is not for the person to

receive a miraculous recovery, (although if God chooses

to do so, it is an incredible gift) rather, it is to unite the

sick person, the community and Christ together in asking

the Creator to be gracious and close to the sick person.

It is up to each individual to discern if a sharing in

this sacrament would be a helpful and comforting

experience during a time of illness – physical, emotional

or spiritual. Also, those who will be having surgery or

testing in the next weeks are invited to the sacrament as

well as those feeling the effects of aging. The gift of the

sacrament is to strengthen the sick person and to instill

God’s inner peace and healing. If your physical,

emotional or spiritual condition is such that this moment

would bring strength and comfort, we invite you to

partake of the Sacrament of the Sick.

Many thanks to all who worked to make our

Parish Yard Sale a success. A number of faithful

parishioners came together to give many hours in

preparing, hosting and cleaning up after the Yard Sale.

We also had some great food provided by our parish

baking ministry and our “grilling” ministry. Please see

the flyer in today’s bulletin for a list of all who were so

generous with their time. Of course, we couldn’t have a

Yard Sale without those parishioners who donated the

many items that made for great bargains. Thanks, also to

those who put up Yard Sale signs on their front lawns. It

was great to go around the neighborhood and see a bit of

publicity for our community.

This weekend we begin our 2017 Grand Annual

Collection. If you are on the parish mailing list you

should have received a letter and pledge card in the mail.

Packets are also available in the baskets at the doors of

the church. St. Matthias Grand Annual Collection is our

most important fundraiser of the year. All of your

donations go directly into our operating budget. I am

very grateful for whatever you are able to give to keep

our parish in good fiscal shape.

Just a reminder. Please do not park your car in

front of the church. This is a fire lane which we need to

keep clear at all times. If you are dropping off or picking

up someone from Mass, please use the fire lane

cautiously. Thanks for understanding.

May they live forever in the arms of God. A

number of our parishioners have recently experienced the

death of a loved one. As a parish, let us pray for all those

grieving the loss of a parent, sibling, relative or friend.

During this difficult time, please know that your parish

family is here to support you. May your loved one be

surrounded by our prayers and the light of Christ’s

unending love.

You are encouraged to pray these readings at home during

the week as you reflect on this Sunday’s Word and prepare

to celebrate next week’s Eucharist.

PARISH FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL AT ST. MATTHIAS

The Society Of St. Vincent DePaul is dedicated to feeding,

clothing, housing and healing individuals and families in our

community who have nowhere else to turn for help. As

important, the Society provides meaningful opportunities for

volunteers to help their neighbors in need with love and

compassion. It provides help for people's physical, mental and

spiritual needs. In doing this the volunteers show those in need

that they matter and they are children of God.

On October 29 and 30, our parish will be hosting a

Ministry Fair after both masses. If you would like a little

more information about the St. Vincent dePaul Society, please

stop by the table and talk to a parishioner about what is needed

and expected. Please take a few minutes between now and the

Fair to give some honest thought: is this a vocation that God is

calling you to? If the answer is yes and you want to come on

this journey with other parishioners, there will be a meeting on

Monday, November 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the parish hall to start

establishing a Conference at St. Matthias. Please call Dale

Dolesh (248-240-3615) for more information.

ST. FRANCIS HOUSE

CLOTHING DRIVE

Our annual St. Francis House Clothing Drive is being

held this weekend. St. Francis House is the largest day

shelter in New England, serving over 800 poor and

homeless men and women each day. This year, St. Francis

House has asked us to focus on men’s clothing, specifically:

· Men’s Footwear new - sizes 9-14

· Men’s Pants (especially jeans) and Shirts

· Men’s Coats, Jackets, Sweater, Sweatshirts/hoodies

· Men’s Hats, Gloves, and Scarves

· Men’s Socks & Underwear & Undershirts

(only NEW undergarments accepted)

Clothing may be dropped off following mass at the

portico in the back of the building, across from the parish

hall kitchen door. If you have items to donate that you

did not bring today they may be dropped off at the office

through Tuesday. Thank you so much for your

generosity.

PARISH DIRECTORY UPDATE

Thank you for your participation in our effort to update

your parish information. Our goal is to improve

communication so that we can serve you more effectively.

As of October 24, 111 households have completed the

directory cards provided to you. Forms are also available

on the St. Matthias web site, www.stmattpar.org for your

convenience.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN (VIRTUS©)

In compliance with the Archdiocese of Boston mandate

regarding the protection of children and others Saint

Matthias will provide the required training for all volunteers

who have the possibility of interacting with children and

other vulnerable persons (sick, elderly) on Saturday,

November 19 from 5:00 - 7:15 pm. A light collation will

be provided. Registration is required. Please contact the

parish office at 508-460-9255. Facilitators for this training

are April Lowe and Theresa Salafia. These facilitators have

received training certification from the Archdiocese of

Boston Child Advocacy Office.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE

NOVEMBER 13, 2016

T h e a n n u a l “ M a s s o f

Remembrance” will be celebrated on

Sunday, November 13, 2016. This

annual celebration provides us with

the opportunity to join with all our

fellow parishioners who have lost a loved one in the past

year, to remind them that we continue to care for them and

walk with them. The Art and Environment Committee will

be busy creating a proper and dignified pictorial memorial

which will be located in the foyer of the church starting

November until the first Sunday of Advent. It will display

pictures of all of those whose funerals were celebrated here

at St. Matthias in the past year. Additionally we also include

parishioners whose loved ones died this past year and their

funerals were celebrated outside of St. Matthias.

As we have in the past, we want to display these

pictures as part of the memorial and include them in the

book of the dead and roll of names to be read aloud at the

“Mass of Remembrance” on November 13. If you have lost

a loved one since last November and the funeral was

celebrated outside St. Matthias, please be sure to contact

Deacon Doug as early as possible at 508-460-9255 with the

information. We ask that all photos be submitted by

October 28 to allow the Art and Environment Team ample

time to plan and put the display together.
