Fr. Tom’s Reflection for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The issue in the three readings today is evil. In the First Reading,

Jeremiah is put in a well, very deep down, cut off from the light, up to his

elbows in mud because he fought in his town against injustice, evil and sin.

In the Second Reading we are asked not to cling to sin, but to stick to

goodness, to fight the battle until the end. And, in the Gospel, Jesus says:

AAAAI have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze

were ignited! I have a baptism to receive. What anguish I feel

till it====s over! Do you think I have come to establish peace on the

earth? I assure you the contrary is true; I have come for

division@@@@ (Luke 12:49-50). This text jolts our image of Jesus as always a

gentle man. The warning He gives us today is clear. Jesus came not to

bring an Aeasy@ peace. Yes, He did come to bring peace but not at the

expense of pulling the wool over our eyes in order to miss the misery in

this world. Jesus did not come to pull a blanket over all the coldness of

human relations so that the shivering will no longer be felt. He came to

battle, to struggle and to undo all the evil in the world. And He asks us to join Him in that battle. We can

join Him first by going to confession and asking for sacramental forgiveness in order to overcome personal

sin. We can join Him by educating our children well, by teaching them to tell the truth. We can join Jesus

by insisting on honesty and fair treatment with everyone. When we join Jesus in this battle, we are facing a

great and necessary mission to overcome the suffering in the world that is rooted in sin.

Alone, we can do nothing, but together, with the fire He brought - the fire of the Holy Spirit - we can purify

our whole world.

Jesus= words are filled with urgency. The sleeping must wake up, the uncommitted must finally name what

they believe in, those obsessed with possessions must turn to God for security.

This is the time for taking a stand. No longer is it appropriate to follow the example of others. There is no

time to waste. The fire is almost upon us. Do Jesus= words make us uncomfortable today? Or do they strike

fire in our hearts? May His challenge ignite us to embrace His Good News more fully, proclaim it more

boldly and live it with greater conviction.

How can the Prince of Peace, the Preacher of the message of non-violence that we hear in the Sermon on the

Mount, speak the hard words of today=s Gospel? AAAADo you think I have come to establish peace on the

earth? I assure you, the contrary is true; I have come for division.@@@@ Then Jesus proceeds to

promise the most painful kinds of division: within households, even between parents and children. Can

these sayings be reconciled? They can, when we recognize that those words of division do not describe Jesus= mission but rather some of the side-effects of that mission.

That the mission may have divisive results should not surprise us. Recall the prediction of Simeon at the

Presentation: AAAABehold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a

sign that will be contradicted...@@@@ (Lk. 2:34). And such, indeed, was the effect of Jesus= public life, from

the rejection at the synagogue of Nazareth to the divided response of the bandits crucified on either side of

Him.

The creation of the new family of the church would continue to provoke as much rejection as acceptance -

even to the splitting of households and families. But, at the same time, today=s readings confront us with

this hard picture of the prophetic mission constantly rejected, from Jeremiah, through Jesus, down to us,

the bit from the Letter to the Hebrews is there to console us.
