SAINT RITA OF CASCIA (1381-1457) May 22 If you’re ever in Philadelphia on May 22, forget parking anywhere near Saint Rita’s shrine. Cars line streets and fill medians as throngs pack a candlelight vigil and six Masses, honoring this patroness of lost causes, hopeless sit-ua ons, and—as her statue in countless churches built by twen eth-century immigrants tes fies—difficult mar-riages, troubled homes, and alienated children. Wise people warn, be careful what you pray for. “Divine Savior,” Rita prayed, “let me suffer like you!” Obedient to parents who refused her wish to become a nun, Rita married a man who returned her devo on with twenty years of abuse. When enemies murdered him, Rita’s two sons swore revenge. Pain ngs depict her poin ng the angry boys toward Christ crucified, whom she begged to restrain them. Within the year, both sons died. Alone now, Rita went to the convent but was refused. The nuns feared violence, since one of them was related to the murderer. Rita arranged peace between the families, made vows, and be-came much sought a er as a counselor and intercessor for forty years on earth—and ever since in heaven.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

We extend the hand of friendship. We're honored to share this day with you as we worship God. We hope that the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and other events posted on our website and

Facebook will touch your heart and that you experience a sense of peace. We also hope you'll continue in the knowledge that St. Mary/St. Benedict parish is a home away from home.

Deacon Randy Smith is available for all your needs and concerns. You are welcome to contact him directly: 330 323 5904.

THE INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS DURING THE MONTH OF MAY: For Deacons We pray that deacons, faithful in their service to the Word and the poor, may be an invigorating symbol for the entire Church.

As the Queen Mother, ruling and reigning with her Son, Mary is involved in the redemp on, the restora on, and the salva on of the world. If we understand who Jesus Christ is— the Messiah, the King of Israel— then we know who Mary is: the Queen Tim Staples from All Genera ons Shall Call Me Blessed

The latest reported sta s cs: The diocese acknowledges 478 households within St. Mary/St. Benedict parish family. 150 have officially par cipated or pledged. This has been calculated to equal 31% household par cipa on, with $30,143.62 total in monetary gi s.

Total commi ed toward Diocesan financial need: $3,038,763.00 of the $4 million requested

Thank you! Your gifts of time, talent and treasure allows us to extend the ministry of Jesus Christ each and every day.

1. PRAY for the success of the Bishop’s Appeal; 2. DONATE to the Appeal 3. VOLUNTEER— me and talent to any of the ministries of the Church. Please Know: We need every household, in every parish to par cipate in some way. You will need to complete a response card, as ALL responses “count” towards par cipa on goals. Visit ccdoy.org/give to learn more and make a gi .

REOPENING When the parish re-opens, we will be going to the new schedule that was agreed on at the Regional Planning Mee ng at the beginning of the year. Note: all parishes of the Diocese will be making similar changes. NEW MASS TIMES are: 8am at our St. Mary Site and 11am at our St. Benedict Site. The op on of visi ng other parishes in our area to a end Vigil Mass is, as al-ways, available to you. Note: If, and when, you visit the other churches, bring your collec on envelopes with you or mail them to our parish office. Your envelopes will be forwarded to us just as we forward envelopes to the other parishes. Direc ves and guidelines are issued for all parishes of the Diocese. They take into considera on how to best proceed under these unusual circumstances while remain-ing pastorally sensi ve to the faithful. Know that all decisions where not made lightly. FULL DETAILS ARE FORTHCOMING. DISPENSATION Understanding the desire of many to return to church, it remains important for those who are at greater risk, or are fearful of exposure, to refrain from doing so. Bishop Murry has dispensed the faithful of our diocese from the Sunday obliga on un l further no ce. If you are at high risk of becoming sick, for now, be safe and remain at home. PENTECOST The word Pentecost is Greek and it means

"50th day." Fi y days a er Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their earthly ministry to make disciples of all na ons. We, as Catholics celebrate the birth of our Church. Another way of looking at it is, we who are bap zed have a second “birthday!” We also celebrate Peter as the first pope of the Catholic Church. The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind, and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. The color of Pentecost is red and the priest wears red vestments on this day. Parishioners are also invited to wear red on this day. CCC732 ... We have seen the true Light, we have received the heavenly Spirit, we have found the true faith: we adore the indivisible Trinity, who has saved us. CCC733 "God is Love" and love is his first gi , containing all others. "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." CCC738 Thus the Church's mission is not an addi on to that of Christ and the Holy Spirit, but is its sacrament: in her whole being and in all her members, the Church is sent to announce, bear witness, make present, and spread the mystery of the communion of the Holy Trinity UPDATE PARISH RECORDS Would you please contact the parish office if you have changed addresses or phone numbers recently? We want to make sure our records remain accurate. Thank you for your con nued support and commitment to St. Mary/St. Benedict Parish Family.

“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION There is a deligh ul character in the original Dr. Doli le Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two iden cal halves, with a head at each end. No ma er which direc on the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Ma hew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to bap ze. He also tells them, “I am with you always, un l the end of the age” (Ma hew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final des ny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory.

FACE MASKS

Are you or someone you know making masks?

Would you be willing to make them for the parish?

We would really like to have some in black plus the four liturgical colors for priests to wear during Mass. We would only need a

few of each color. Please, call the office and let us know.

VIRTUS VIRTUS is a na onal program for Child Abuse and Protec on. It focuses on how to prevent abuse and neglect and how to spot “signs” when working with children and vulnerable adults. All volunteers and staff are required to be cer fied in the VIRTUS program. In addi on to a ending the session, all will need to have updated finger print and back-ground checks. It is very important that we at St. Mary/St. Benedict stay compliant. Deacon Randy is a Facilitator of the program. (class dates and mes TBD) Most people do not want to take the me or feel that it is necessary to come to the session, but be assured, everyone learns something new. There are also some good follow-up discussions where we learn from each other. Please contact the parish office 330 453 2110 or Deacon directly 330 323 5904.

MEMORIAL DAY Memorial Day/HISTORY.COM Monday, May 25, 2020, Memorial Day is an American holiday, honor-ing the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decora on Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Amer-icans observe Memorial Day by vis-i ng cemeteries or memorials, hold-ing family gatherings and par ci-pa ng in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. Did you know? Each year on Memorial Day a na onal moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local me. A MEMORIAL DAY PRAYER: Hear Our Prayers This Day In the quiet sanctuaries of our own hearts, let each of us name and call on the One whose power over us is great and gentle, firm and forgiving, holy and healing ... You who created us, who sustain us, who call us to live in peace, hear our prayer this day. Hear our prayer for all who have died, whose hearts and hopes are known to you alone … Hear our prayer for those who put the welfare of others ahead of their own and give us hearts as generous as theirs … Hear our prayer for those who gave their lives in the service of others, and accept the gi of their sacrifice … Help us to shape and make a world where we will lay down the arms of war and turn our swords into plough-shares for a harvest of jus ce and peace … Comfort those who grieve the loss of their loved ones and let your healing be the hope in our hearts... Hear our prayer this day and in your mercy answer us in the name of all that is holy. The peace of God be with you. - Aus n Fleming

Act with gentleness and reverence toward all, so that when you are maligned those who

defame you will be the ones put to shame.

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

I The Historical and Transcendent Event Chapter Three IV THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST IN THE FULLNESS OF TIME “Rejoice, you who are full of grace…” 725) Finally, through Mary, the Holy Spirit begins to bring men, the objects of God’s merciful love, into communion with Christ. And the humble are always the first to accept him: shepherds, magi, Simeon and Anna, the bride and groom at Cana, and the first disciples. 726) At the end of this mission of the Spirit, Mary became the Woman, the New Eve (“mother of the living”) the mother of the “Whole Christ.” As such, she was present with the Twelve who “with one accord devoted themselves to prayer,” a the dawn of the “end me” which the Sprit was to inaugurate on the morning of Pentecost with the manifesta on of the Church. Christ Jesus 727) The en re mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit, in the fullness of me, is contained in this: that the Son is the one anointed by the Father’s Sprit since his Incarna on—Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. Everything in the second chap-ter of the Creed is to be read in this light. Christ’s whole work is in fact a joint mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit….

IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOST! Individuals who drink a few cups of green or black tea every day tend to get sick less than those who do not, due to the many nutri onal benefits teas provide. L-theanine, an amino acid present in both black and green tea, contributes to a boost in the immune system. Each tea is unique and has its own health benefits. Most teas fight off bacterial, fungal, and viral infec ons that cause diseases and illnesses like influenza. There a wide variety of different kinds of teas that harbor various health benefits. To further increase their immune-boos ng power add honey, lemon, ginger, or turmeric.
