They shall grow not old

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

The Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost

Themes of the Collect • God caused all holy Scripture to be written for

our learning. • We ask that we may hear, read, take careful

notice of, learn, and make the scriptures our own,

• so that we may hold fast the blessed hope of eternal life.

Lesson – Daniel 12: 1 – 4a Daniel has a vision of the end of time, when Michael the angel of Israel, who is described as a great captain, will appear and the people will be delivered. Some will wake to everlasting life and some to eternal humiliation. Daniel is to keep secret the names in the book of life until the end of the age.

Psalm 146 A song of praise to the Lord, who feeds the hungry, frees the prisoner, restores sigh to the blind, and provides for the orphan and the widow.

The Epistle – Hebrews 9: 24 - 28 Christ has not entered a sanctuary made by human hands, which is only a symbol of the reality; but heaven itself, where he appears before God on our behalf. He came once and for all to abolish sin by the sacrifice of himself. Men die once, and after death comes judgment. Christ was offered once to bear the burden of men’s sins, and will appear again to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. The Gospel - Mark 12: 38 - 44 Jesus was teaching a large crowd of eager listeners. He said, “Beware of the doctors of the law who walk about in long robes and are greeted with respect. They have the chief seats. In synagogues and the places of honour at feasts. They eat up the property of widows while they say long prayers as a pretense. They will be severely judged.” Jesus sat down opposite the temple treasury watching as people dropped money into the chest. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came by and put in two small copper coins worth a penny. He called his disciples and said, “This poor widow has given more than any of the others. They gave out of their affluence, but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had to live on.”

The Collect

O GOD, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as He is pure; that, when He comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like Him in His eternal and glorious kingdom; where He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lesson ~ I Kings 17: 8 - 16 A Reading from the Word of God written in the Seventeenth Chapter of the First Book of Kings, beginning at the eighth verse. THE WORD of the LORD came to Elijah, saying, "Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you." So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, "Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink." As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand." But she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. For thus says the LORD the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the

day that the LORD sends rain on the earth." She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 146 Lauda, anima mea PRAISE THE Lord, O my soul; while I live will I praise the Lord: yea, as long as I have any being, I will sing praises unto my God. 2. O put not your trust in princes, nor in any child of man: for there is no help in them. 3. For when the breath of man goeth forth he shall turn again to his earth: and then all his thoughts perish. 4. Blessed is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help: and whose hope is in the Lord his God; 5. Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: who keepeth his promise for ever; 6. Who helpeth them to right that suffer wrong: who feedeth the hungry. 7. The Lord looseth men out of prison: the Lord giveth sight to the blind. 8. The Lord helpeth them that are fallen: the Lord careth for the righteous. 9. The Lord careth for the strangers, he defendeth the fatherless and widow: as for the way of the ungodly, he turneth it upside down. 10. The Lord thy God, O Sion, shall be King for evermore: and throughout all generations. Glory be to the Father, and to Son and to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning

Is now and ever shall be World without end. Amen.

Epistle ~ Hebrews 9: 24 - 28

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Ninth Chapter of Paul’s letter to the Hebrews, beginning at the twenty-fourth verse. CHRIST DID not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel ~ Mark 12: 38 - 44

The Lord be with you And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to Christ Our Saviour.

TEACHING IN the temple, Jesus said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.” He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ Our Lord.

Hurricane Preparedness November is the last month of the Hurricane season. Please continue to exercise caution and be in state of readiness. Secure roofs and clear drains. Having experienced a prolonged drought, many are glad for the rains. But too much, too quickly will only make matters worse. Always make sure that you stock up on non-perishable food items. Use dry and canned goods. With canned goods make sure that you also have manual can openers. Some canned foods come with pull-tabs and these are ideal. Officials recommend that individuals be able to sustain themselves for three to seven days without power during a disaster. Items in your hurricane kit should include:

• Water - 1 gallon/ day/ person • Food - canned goods / can opener • Clothes - rain gear / warm jackets • Communication devices • Backup power supplies • Medicine / first aid • Cash • Family evacuation plan

Make sure that your cell/mobile phones are always fully charged and ensure that you have batteries for your radios and similar devices.
