Fr. John’s Notes: Third Sunday of ordinary Time: Today we find ourselves in the middle of the Week of Christian Unity. How appropriate, then, is our second reading from Saint Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, in which he calls on the people

of Corinth to put an end to their divisions so that their focus might be on proclaiming the gospel. Let us pray for unity in our own Church as well as unity among all Christians. Anniversary of the Supreme Court Decision of Roe v Wade: Since the Supreme Court decisions in 1973 that legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy there have been few legal restrictions on abortion. Contrary to the proponents who worked hard to make it legal, abortion has not solved the problems of poverty, family breakdown, child abuse or domestic violence. Instead each year these problems seem to grow worse and our country is even more divided. Now many people have come to view abortion as a legal right rather than the ending of a human life. Since abortion is now seen as a right, another national debate has gained momentum about the right to end our lives as our choice and to make that choice for someone we deem has a poor quality of life but is unable to decide for themselves (euthanasia). We as a nation have moved down a path toward treating human beings as disposable objects without dignity and a divine soul. This week we begin to hear again about the mission and ministry of Jesus as it is narrated in Matthew’s Gospel. Jesus begins far away from Jerusalem in an area where many Jews thought most people were pagan and only a few faithful Jewish people believed in the one God. But Jesus starts there just as the prophet Isaiah proclaimed and he heals many people and calls the first apostles. Jesus offers us the same opportuni-ties today. He continues to bring God’s healing grace to us and all people and reminds us that every human life has value since we are made in the image of God. Let us pray that those who have chosen to have an abortion or who have pushed someone else to do this may seek the mercy of God. We pray that all Christians may work in a loving way to help women and nurture and protect children who are developing in the womb. We pray that we as a nation may turn down the right path to cherish each human person at all stages of life from conception to natural death. And we pray that this extends to people of all races and all areas regardless of their economic situation.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: Fr. John will be available to hear confessions from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings at St. Mary Church, Bloomington unless noted in the bulletin. Other times for reconciliation are listed on the cover of the bulletin.

St. Mary’s Redecoration Project: The work to repair and redecorate the interior of St. Mary’s Church has started. Currently, the crew from John Kaiser Co. from Dubuque, IA has been working to

repair the loose plaster in the ceiling and walls. They will be adhering a thin vinyl layer over the plaster (new technique to replace dry-walling) and painting the main church and sanctuary. This project will address the disrepair of the church interior and keep St. Mary’s Help of Christians Church both beautiful and functional for another generation. If additional funds are received, the parish council also hope to complete the follow-ing projects 1. Installing new carpet/wood flooring in

the sanctuary 2. Adding a bathroom on the main floor and new access

ramp (A grant from the Apostolate to the Handi-capped, Inc. has been received to fund most of this project.)

Third Sunday of ordinary Time January 22, 2017

Celebrate Life: The first right of the human person is his life. He has other goods and some are more precious, but this one is fundamental - the condition of all

the others. Hence it must be protected above all others. It does not belong to society, nor does it belong to public authority in any form to recognize this right for some and not for others: all discrimination is evil, whether it be founded on race, sex, color or religion. It is not recognition by another that consti-tutes this right. This right is antecedent to its recognition; it demands recognition and it is strictly unjust to refuse it.
