St. Mary Parish Marion, Ohio FROM THE PASTOR: During the past week, I met with the Parish Pastoral Council and in the week to come I will join the Parish Finance Council for its quarterly meeting. On Saturday, January 19, children from our parish who are preparing for their First Holy Communion had their first opportunity to meet the forgiving Christ in the Sacrament of Penance. In 2002, Pope St. John Paul II issued an Apostolic Letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae (The Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary). In the letter, the Pope noted that, while the Rosary is associated with Mary and the events of her life, it is at heart a Christ-centered prayer. To make this more evident, he proposed an additional five mysteries, called “Luminous Mysteries” or “mysteries of light,” that would “include the mysteries of Christ’s public ministry between His Baptism and His Passion.” In the traditional mysteries of the Rosary, there was a gap between the childhood of Jesus that is meditated upon during the Joyful Mysteries and the suffering and death of Jesus that is meditated upon during the Sorrowful Mysteries. This year, the first two Luminous Mysteries are featured in the Gospel readings on January 13 and January 20: the Baptism of the Lord and the Wedding Feast of Cana. In devising the Luminous Mysteries, St. John Paul II may well have been influenced by St. George Preca, a Carmelite priest from Malta, whom John Paul had canonized in 2001. Preca, in 1957, suggested the use of five ‘Mysteries of Light’ for the private recitation of the Rosary. Preca’s list is very close to that later proposed by the Pope: 1) After Jesus was baptized in the Jordan, He was taken to the desert. 2) Jesus reveals Himself as true God by word and miracles. 3) Jesus teaches the Beatitudes on the mountain. 4) Jesus is transfigured on the mountain. 5) Jesus takes His last supper with the Apostles. I hope that the Rosary continues to be your companion in 2019 and helps you be drawn more deeply into the mysteries of Christ and His Mother. Sincerely Yours, in Christ, Fr. FROM THE PASTOR:

During the past week, I met with the Parish Pastoral Council and in the week to come I will join the Parish Finance Council for its quarterly meeting.

Preca’s list is very close to that later proposed by the Pope:

I hope that the Rosary continues to be your companion in 2019 and helps you be drawn more deeply into the mysteries of Christ and His Mother.
