RCIA – Exploring the History of Our Faith Next up for the RCIA – a look back into our history as a people of faith. Topics on the calendar include a look at our Jewish roots and ancestors and an overview of key moments in the history of the Catholic Church. Throughout the Old Testament, we see God’s ever-constant presence with and protection of the people of God. We also see a consistent struggle in our ancestors between faith and fear, between faithfulness to our God and our desire for things of this world. Those struggles continues to factor in our Catholic history, as our past includes events we are both proud and not-so-proud of. Our discussion will include an overview of the role of various Councils and their impact on our faith and traditions. The RCIA team invites all our parishioners and guests to continue praying for Jessica and Hannah – our Catechumen and Candidate, and for Peyton – our Inquirer; we also encourage prayers for our neighbors who are being called back to the Church, and all those who are seeking to better understand their relationship with God. Individuals who would like to know more about the Catholic Faith can connect with someone on our RCIA team for basic information or to set up an appointment to discuss specific questions or goals; contact Maureen Evers (847-362-1005 or [email protected]) or Mark Zwolski (847-644-7073 or [email protected]).

ASH WEDNESDAY—FEBRUARY 26, 2020 Masses with Ashes: 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 7 p.m.

Prayer Services with Ashes: 12 Noon and 4:00 p.m.

LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if neces-sary to maintain strength according to one’s needs; but eating solid foods be-tween meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encour-aged for Holy Saturday. “Lent is ordered to preparing for the cele-bration of Easter, since the Lenten liturgy prepares for celebration of the Paschal Mystery both catechumens, by the various stages of Christian Initiation, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance.”

(Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, #27)

DAILY MASS DURING LENT We encourage the practice of Daily Mass during Lent. Even if you can-not attend every day, perhaps you can join us once or twice a week. The Mass schedule is as follows:

7:00 a.m.—Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:00 a.m.—Tuesday & Thursday

8:30 a.m.—Saturday Morning

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Stations are an old tradition in the Church, especially during Lent. The devotion began in the Middle Ages when Christians longed to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but found this impossible. Instead we trace the journey of Jesus along the Way of the Cross to Calvary and Resur-rection in our own church by prayer and meditation. Stations will be on

Friday evenings at 4:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. in the Church

SMV THURSDAY DAY OF PRAYER This Week – Fourth Thursday—February 27

Morning Prayer (Lauds) 9:30-10:00 a.m., following the 9:00 a.m. Mass in the Church

“Lauds” is Latin for Praise. We begin the day by acknowledging that God is God, we are creation, and God is most worthy of our praise. For more information, contact Margie Chua Lee at [email protected]

Page 3: St. Mary of Vernon Catholic Church...2020/02/23  · Dear Parishioners, I am again asking for your prayerful discernment regarding becoming a Minister of Care at St. Mary of Vernon.

Dear Parishioners,

I am again asking for your prayerful discernment regarding becoming a Minister of Care at St. Mary of Vernon. We are in need of additional assistance since some of our Ministers of Care have either moved away or retired from the ministry because of age and inability to minister in this capacity any longer. Our Ministers of Care feel blessed that they have the privilege of bringing the Eucharist to those who are unable to attend our Sunday Mass. If you feel like this might be something God is calling you to, please contact me at the parish of-fice, 847-362-1005, so we can talk further. The next Minister of Care training is scheduled for March 7th and March 14th. Please see the details below. I look forward to hearing from you.

God Bless,

Sr. Mary Barbara Director of Care Ministry St. Mary of Vernon

HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION LENTEN ALMSGIVING

2020 Our Catholic tradition encourages us to observe Lent through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Almsgiving is the act of helping the poor and performing acts of charity and mercy. The Human Concerns Commission is offering an opportunity for all parishioners to contribute to a specific charity over the six weeks of Lent. Each week a worthy charity will be highlighted and specific requests for donations will be listed. You can participate as often as you like by placing your donations in the blue box on the table in the center of the narthex. The six charities that were selected this year represent a cross section of needs in our local community; namely, sup-port for mothers and children, and at-risk children in our community and around the world. We hope that this opportuni-ty to reach out to the poor and vulnerable and those in need will serve to bring you closer to the full observance of Lent.

March 1 Misericordia Supporting children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. March 8 Catholic Charities Diaper Bank Provides disposable diapers of all sizes to food pantries in Lake County, including our Sharing Hands. March 15 Veteran’s Closet Provides assistance for homeless Veterans who are setting up new households. LENTEN ALMSGIVING FOR FEBRUARY 29/MARCH 1—MISERICORDIA Misericordia offers a community of care that maximizes potential for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities, many of whom are also physically challenged. By serving society’s most vulnerable citizens, Misericordia also serves the families who want the best for them, yet cannot provide it at home. Through a spectrum of residential options on its 31-acre Chicago campus and in the community, and with a wide va-riety of programs, Misericordia currently serves more than 600 children and adults from diverse racial, religious and so-cio-economic backgrounds. While funds from the State of Illinois cover basic room and board costs for the residents, they cover only a small portion of the expenses for programs that enhance their lives, such as physical therapists, occu-pational therapists, and speech therapists; workshops, recreational activities, spiritual guidance, & psychological support.

Cash and checks made out to St. Mary of Vernon can be placed in the blue metal collection box.

SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEK Church in Central & Eastern Europe (CCEE)

Proceeds from this collection fund poverty outreach, education, formation & evangelization, scholarships, communications programs, construction. For exam-ple, in the Lithuanian capitol of Vilnius, Crisis Preg-nancy Center has provided a wide range of long-term help to hundreds of women: psychological counseling, job search assistance, training in infant care, life skills such as budget management, and group therapy for women who have experienced miscarriages and lost babies. Where few government resources are available to support these kinds of ser-vices, local organizations, with the help of CCEE, are accompanying the most vulnerable women and helping them to choose life, even in their time of greatest need. Your contributions to the CCEE help to train staff and further grow this pregnancy center, helping to build a culture of life, solidarity, and sup-port for women and children. More information about the CCEE and the projects it supports can be found at www.usccb.org/ccee.

The Unemployment Line

What Recruiters and Robots Look for on a Resume (continued) When involved in a job search, positioning yourself correctly from the start is critical, and that means getting your re-sume right. Among things you can do with your resume to help advance beyond an initial screening or review by auto-mated systems:

File type and formatting

Unfortunately, PDFs are not always bot friendly, so while a PDF would maintain the formatting of your resume, it might not pass through the ATS. Follow the instructions for file format if they are given in the job posting; if not, play it safe and submit a resume as a Word document. While charts, images, and logos are appealing to a human reviewer, bots have a hard time translating them. Clean and straightforward formatting is preferred, such as solid circles for bullet points.

The purpose of our Wellspring Employment Resource Community (WERC) ministry is to provide a safe and effective forum for sharing work search tools and techniques which can enable unemployed parishioners in their search for mean-ingful and rewarding work.

Upcoming “WERC” Events

WERC GROUP MEETINGS are currently held on the 4th Monday of each month. All meetings are held in the Rev. John P. Finnegan Parish Center Next Meeting – Monday, February 24th at 7:30 PM – Monthly WERC Support Group Session

WERC members and guests will have the opportunity to meet to network, share success stories and advice, and discuss some of the challenges of the job search. All are welcome! Questions? Contact the WERC team at [email protected].

Around the Corner – At St. Joseph’s Parish in Libertyville March 4, 2020: Creating an Effective Handbill. One of the most effective job networking tools is the “handbill” or networking brief, yet too many job seekers and career changers are just not familiar with this simple variant of your re-sume. A well-designed handbill can substantially shorten your transition time. At our next meeting, Dan Barber, ca-reer transition expert, will present a talk entitled: Network into Target Companies Using Your Handbill. Bonus: Intro to Networking - James Warda, communications professional and former job seeker, knows what it's like to tense up when you hear "networking", thinking it basically means cold-calling people and asking for a job. But he looks at networking differently: simply building authentic relationships where both can help each other. James will show us how to approach others in person and online, build trust, and tap into the power of these relationships to help both people get what they want. The St Joseph Employment Ministry meets from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Formation Center (112 N Milwaukee, Liber-tyville, 60048), Room C. Please enter from the rear of the building. All are welcome, the sessions are free.

SHARING HANDS FOOD PANTRY ITEM FOR FEBRUARY:

Spaghetti Sauce & Salsa Please bring your donations to Mass or to the Sharing Hands drop-off door on the side of the Parish Center (call for the daily code). We will see that the items get to needy families. Please ensure that food items are not past their expiration date. We must dispose of them if they are.
