Weekly Message
Today, we celebrate the feast of the baptism of Jesus by John in the river Jordan. This feast brings to an end the short but joyful season of Christmas and marks the beginning of the Church’s Ordinary Time. I truly enjoyed the Christmas season in the parish this year. The Christmas Cantata set off a beautiful tone for the season. Thanks to the choir, the musicians, instrumentalists and our choir direc-tor for a job well done! Our children who acted out the Christmas story according to the gospel of Luke were awesome at the 4PM Christmas Vigil Mass! We had a great turnout of parishioners and visitors for the season. Thank God for the safety of everyone who visited their loved ones.
The baptism of Jesus launched him into his public ministry. In the same vein, the Church invites us to begin the Ordinary Time of the Liturgical Year today with the zeal of Christ. Does Jesus need baptism? The baptism of John is for repentance. If Jesus is sinless and does not need repentance, why did he get baptized? John the Baptist did not feel that Jesus needed his baptism, as attested to by the scriptures, Matthew 3:13-14. However, Jesus received bap-tism from John so as to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:15). Through his baptism, Jesus enters into our world, identifying with our sinfulness so that he can redeem us. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus dispels the dark-ness of sin, including the sin of our forefathers, known as original sin. We will use the occasion of today’s feast to re-flect more on the sacrament of Baptism.
Before He ascended into heaven, Jesus commanded the disciples to go out and baptize all those who listen to them and believe in the gospel (Matthew 28:18-20). By this, Jesus makes Baptism the sacrament that is the fundamental gate-way to salvation. This sacrament is the ordinary way for people to enter into the mercy of God and be saved. The per-son who believes and is baptized receives mercy and then becomes a child of God, an heir to the kingdom. Baptism is necessary for salvation for those to whom the gospel has been proclaimed and who have had the possibility of asking for this sacrament. The Catholic Catechism says: “By Baptism all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins, as well as all punishment for sin. In those who have been reborn, nothing remains that would impede their entry into the Kingdom of God, neither Adam’s sin, nor personal sin, nor the consequences of sin, the gravest of which is separation from God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1263).
At the Baptism of Jesus, we experience another epiphany when God revealed his person to humanity. We read in the scriptures how the heavens opened at the baptism of Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended and the voice of the Father was heard saying of Jesus: “You are my Son, the Beloved; my favor rests on you” (Luke 3:22; Mathew 3:16-17). This is the revelation of God as Trinity. It is in this Trinitarian formula that Christians are baptized today. The Most Holy Trinity plants the seed of grace in the heart of the baptized so that the person has faith in God, hope in God and loves God. The person is also empowered to live and act under the promptings of the Holy Spirit and thus grow in goodness.
Through the grace of baptism, the Christian becomes a living stone that is being built into a spiritual house for God, to be a holy priesthood. In baptism, we share in the common priesthood of all believers. We participate also in the kingly and prophetic ministry of Christ. The baptized therefore works in communion with other Christians to bring about the Kingdom of God on Earth. Having received this sacrament of grace ourselves, every parent is called by the Church to share this gift of grace with their children, even infants. Therefore, infant baptism is actively encouraged by the Church. Preparation for the baptism of infants is often a time when parents deepen their faith in God.
Our parish has an excellent program for preparing parents for the baptism of their infants. We also have a wonderful instructional program that prepares children over seven (7) years old for the reception of baptism and other sacra-ments of initiation. If you know someone who has not yet been baptized, you will do the person a lot of good by invit-ing them to church and urging them to call the church office to begin the preparation journey that will lead to their receiving baptism and other sacraments of initiation for adults.
I wish you a very blessed 2016!!
—Fr. Felix

The Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts
On the day of Epiphany, the optional announcement of the dates of Easter and other moveable feasts of the liturgical year was pro-claimed at the principal Mass. Like the Christmas Proclamation, it is all about time, but where the Christmas Proclamation situated the birth of Christ in historic time, chromos time, this proclamation reminds us that salvation is happening here and now, kairos time. This
proclamation is fascinating and rich in meaning. It originated during a time when people did not have calendars in their homes, and it was their only way of learning the all-important date of Easter. It has a much deeper meaning as well. The liturgical year is not just a series of dates and holy days of obligation. According to the proclamation, the liturgy is the manifest presence of the Lord among us. It begins by
connecting the joy of Christmas to the glory of Easter. In a sense, everything is Easter, for when the Church celebrates the feasts of Mary, the apostles and saints, and even all souls, we are also recalling the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. The proclamations ends by
acclaiming Jesus, who is Lord of time and history—a powerful time and a fitting thing to remember at the beginning of the year.

What is National Catholic Schools Week?
National Catholic Schools Week is the annual cele-bration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2016 is January 31st - February 6th. The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2016 is
“Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Schools typically observe
the annual celebration week with Masses, open hous-es and other activities for students, families, parish-
ioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our
church, our communities and our nation.

Going By Another Way
Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.
Matthew 2:12 This sentence concluded our gospel reading from last Sunday. Like the Magi, sometimes the circumstances of our lives take us on a route other than the one we had planned. Many of us can relate to this situation; we are certainly not alone in that we have many examples from the lives of famous people:
Moses escaped Egypt after killing a man, hoping to go live a quiet life somewhere and be forgotten. God called him to
go back and deliver his people from slavery (Exodus 2:12ff).
St. Joseph was undoubtedly expecting to have a “normal” Jewish family when he was called by God to be the caregiver of the Holy Family (Matthew 1:20).
Saul was a highly educated, very zealous Jew who was breathing murderous threats against Christians and received
orders to bring them back to Jerusalem in chains. Christ himself appeared to him, and, after changing his name to Paul, he sacrificed everything to convert people to the Christianity that he had been vigorously persecuting (Acts 9).
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton happily married the handsome and wealthy man whom she adored. He suddenly became ill
and died young, leaving her with four small children. She could have become lost in self-pity and given up; instead, she accepted the kind help of friends who helped her through that sorrowful and difficult time. Through trust and faith, she
became one of the greatest saints of the Americas.
Do you have a similar example from your own life or the life of someone you know? As for me, it was not my origi-nal intention to be a pastoral minister in the Church; I did not know such a thing existed. When I was growing up, every-one told me that I should be an artist. Not knowing what else to do, I first pursued art as a career. God eventually showed me another way, but not before facing the confusion and uncertainty of my future without being what everyone always told me I should be. In time, I found myself teaching and ministering when I never thought I could speak in front of a group of people. Our life journey can lead us down sudden and unwelcome paths, such as chronic or sudden illness; the death of a spouse or other loved one; loss of a cherished friendship; moving far from home; underemployment or loss of a job; or an unexpected pregnancy. While it is appropriate to make plans for the future, it is important to trust in the Lord and know that, even if our plans don’t turn out as we had hoped because “We know that all things work for good for those who love God,* who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). Our God has counted every hair of our heads (Luke 12:7) and cares about all that happens to us. While trials and crises can be unpleasant, it can also be an invitation for growth and an opportunity for blessing in ways we had not foreseen or expected. Some ways to cope might include: 1. Allow yourself to experience the shock, sadness, fear and sense of loss. It’s okay to grieve and to feel sorry for what
we no longer have, and the uncertainty of not knowing exactly what will be next. 2. Offer all things in prayer, handing over the situation to God and trusting that he will provide our every need. Worship
him as the God of your life who loves you and cares for you. 3. Cultivate a regular prayer life. Offer all things to God on a daily basis in order to build a foundation that will make
trusting in God easier in difficult moments. 4. Set aside some pride, allowing others to help. In doing so, we allow others to be a blessing and stop trying to do
everything by ourselves. 5. Learn to be okay with not having all of the answers. Sometimes we must “live into the answer.” Some things are a
mystery that we will never completely understand in this life. 6. Accept weakness and vulnerability. We are not bulletproof, and that’s okay. 7. Know that change isn’t always a bad thing. Often we resist change because we are much more comfortable with
what is familiar. Exploring new territory may be a little scary, but it can also bring us to growth and new life. 8. Consider what opportunities may await you if you step forward in faith. One of my wise college professors used to say, “Make plans; then make plans to change your plans.” God’s plan for us is that we enter into eternal life. Any path that leads to our salvation is the right one, no matter what route we take. What are your plans for this year and beyond? Are you prepared to accept any unexpected turns? Can you trust God with your plans? I invite you to share your story! Email: [email protected].

—Padre Felix
