A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Pax et Bonum!
Hello! Welcome to St. Maria Goretti on the Third Sunday of our 2015 season of Lent!
We welcome all of you to our Masses this weekend! In a special way we welcome all of our
guests and visitors who join us at the Altar of the Lord! It is great to have you with us!
Today at our 10:00 AM Mass we are celebrating with our Elect, our Catechumens and
Candidates for full-membership in our Church in this year’s RCIA, the First Scrutiny of this
Lenten season. Today the Church prays for and prays over all of those who are going to be Baptized, Confirmed, and
received into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. These ancient prayers include prayers of exorcism, prayers of
support, and modified prayers of petition specifically for the Elect. The First Scrutiny takes place immediately after the
Homily today. Next weekend, the Second Scrutiny will be celebrated at the RCIA Retreat in Ferdinand, Indiana, at a
special Mass next Saturday afternoon. The Third and final Scrutiny will be celebrated back here at our 10:00 AM
Mass on March 22nd. A reminder to all of our RCIA sponsors that they should accompany their Catechumen or
Candidate for all three of the Scrutinies. The RCIA sponsor is to place his or her right hand on the right shoulder of the
Catechumen or Candidate, throughout the prayers of the scrutiny. Let us keep our brothers and sisters in the final
stages of the RCIA in our prayers during these last few weeks of their preparations!
This weekend is also our 30th Men’s Christ Renews His Parish weekend. We pray for both the men of Team
#29 and the men of Team #30. For fifteen years now, the Christ Renews His Parish program has been making a
substantial difference in our Parish family! By this point, hundreds of individuals, both men and women, have already
made a Christ Renews His Parish weekend. And it has made major differences in this Parish community! I sincerely
hope that every person will eventually be able to make one of the Christ Renews weekend sometime soon! The next
women’s weekend is September 12th & 13th, and the next men’s weekend is September 26th & 27th. Mark your
calendars today!
I have had several conversations recently about an old, St. Maria Goretti problem, that seems to keep coming
back. The concern is about the number of children who are leaving Mass to go to the bathroom unaccompanied by an
adult, multiple times during the course of a Sunday Mass. The concern is that this is a distraction to the rest of the
community that is trying to pray. I would add that from my view it is not always just our kids that are doing this.
Perhaps, we should all be grateful to God that so many of us have been blessed with healthy bladders and kidneys.
More likely, we should all try to go to the bathroom before Mass starts or wait to go to the bathroom until after Mass is
over, and we should encourage, challenge, and even I dare say, teach, our children to do the same. Of course, there
can always be those times when we are not feeling well, or when any of us can have an “emergency” situation, and
obviously we need to leave. But that shouldn’t be happening to the same person, no matter how old or young they
are, every week. Let’s work together to get better at this! It can be a distraction to others. Let’s work together to help
one another to pray our very best together at Mass!
This coming Friday evening, March 13th, at 7:00 PM in church, our TRUTH High School Youth Group will once
again be performing their “Living Stations of the Cross”. This event is always a favorite on our Lenten calendar. The
Stations are such a beautiful and powerful devotion that have inspired millions of Catholics down through the ages.
And the version that our high school folks perform is particularly moving. I thank our youth group TRUTH for once
again doing this for our entire Parish community. I know that the high school folks put a lot of work and effort into
this. And I hope that each one of you can join us this Friday for this special event!
There’s a lot going on! We are very blessed! Make the most out of this week of Lent!
In Christ,
Fr. Kevin
Life is short. Wear comfortable shoes!
Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with
everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our
Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin

STEWARDSHIP DISCIPLESHIP
What is Fruitful Harvest? And how does it impact SMG? The Fruitful Harvest campaign helps fund the programs and outreach missions of the Lafayette Diocese. Here at SMG, we are running a “dovetail campaign.” This means that 100% of the monies collected in excess of our diocesan obligation comes back to SMG to benefit our Parish Family.
Have we met our Diocesan obligation for the campaign? Yes
So, now all additional monies pledged and collected will
directly help here at SMG? Yes
Fruitful Harvest is the primary way our Parish Family cares for debt reduction...or mortgage payments. We have a little less than $1.8 million debt remaining from the con-struction of our church facility. Weekly tithing funds are not
dedicated to this purpose...only Fruitful Harvest funds.
How many families have responded to the pledge cam-
paign? 41%
Can we still pledge? YES! Please visit SMG’s Website (smgonline.org) and look for the Fruitful Harvest Pledge Opportunity on the slideshow.
“You shall not covet” is perhaps one of the most difficult
commandments to keep in our consumer society.
As Christian stewards, we know we are recipients and
caretakers of God’s many gifts. May this understanding
help us be less resentful of the gifts of others.
SHEPHERD’S GATE FOOD PANTRY
March’s items of the month: boxed potatoes or pasta
Please drop off your donations in one of the collection boxes at the Church, School, or Parish Office entrances.
Landscape Committee News
Nice weather is on its way, and SMG will be getting ready for Easter before we know it! Mulch, flowers, etc! If you can help, please drop me a note so we can begin the planning! I would love to hear from you!
Hello Families of St. Maria Goretti, As co-chairs of Spring Fling 2015 “An Evening in Wine Country,” our planning is well underway! Do you own your own business? Would you like to be a sponsor? Do you have something you could donate? We are looking for all types of donations, not only tangible goods, but also unique and exclusive experiences. Original and personal ideas are welcome! We also are in need of many, many volunteers to make this event happen! If you are a new to our Parish Family, this would be a great way to “jump in” and meet new people! Please help us make this event something special for our Parish Family Please contact us, [email protected], with any questions!

REFLECTION FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT
In the Gospel we hear of Jesus driving out the money-changers from the temple. He is upset with the injustice and exploitation of the faith-ful in the name of God. Who or what in today’s world are
the “money-changers”? What do you need to drive out of your life? PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEEDS A TEACHER
Do you feel a calling to share your faith with others, particularly those of middle-school age? PRE is still looking for a 7th/8th grade teacher for Monday afternoons, 4-5:15 pm. If you are interested, contact Katie Barbour.
This Lenten Season, all adults are invited to join in a parish-wide book initiative: First: Pick up your copy of the free book, Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody after all Masses (one book per family). PRE and School families should have received a copy through their child’s class. Second: Read the book at your pace. The entire Parish Family will be doing the same! Third: Reflect upon the questions at the end of each chap-ter. Share answers with at least one other person. Ques-tions? Contact Connie Anderson, [email protected]. A DEEPER LOOK INTO THEOLOGY OF THE BODY
Want to learn more about God’s plan for your life? Then join Fa-ther Travis, Justin and Katie Svec, and Jenny Sergio as they take a deeper look at Saint John Paul II’s teaching known as The-
ology of the Body. The next ses-sion will be held March 12, 7-9 pm, in the St. Augustine Meeting Room (end of the main school hallway). Ques-tions? Call Connie Anderson, 867-3213, ext. 1203.
TRUTH LIVING STATIONS
Hopefully this season of Lent has brought you closer as a family and helped you fall more in love with our Savior. The Youth Ministry wants to aide you this season with the LIVING STATIONS. That’s right! On Friday, March 13, at 7 pm, you can join us as we reenact the Via Dolorosa of our Lord live in His Sanctuary. Come support our ministry and our youth with your presence and pray the stations with us.
ATTENTION GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS!
Two scholarship opportunities are available for 2015 graduating seniors. The Christopher Warner Memorial Schol-
arship is given in memory of Christopher Warner from St. Patrick’s Parish in Kokomo who died at the age of 19. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to recognize a high school senior in the Local Church of Lafayette-in-Indiana who demonstrates his/her Catholic faith and identity through commitment and service to his/her commitment to par-ish, school, and committee. The $1,000 Diocesan Leadership Scholarship is awarded to recognize a high school senior in the Local Church who demonstrates active participation and Catholic leadership in his/her parish and parish youth ministry program. More information and an application can be found on the Diocesan Website, www.dol-in.org.
THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS APRIL 7.

SCHOOL ENROLLMENT
St. Maria Goretti School currently has one student opening in Kinder-garten for the 2015/2016 school year. If you or someone you know is interested, contact Michelle Hanlin at [email protected].
IMMUNIZATION NOTICE FOR KINDERGARTEN
AND 5TH GRADE PARENTS
Students entering kindergarten in Indiana are now required to receive two Hepatitis A vaccines given at least six months apart. This is a new requirement as of 2014. Parents please schedule your kindergarten doc-tor appointments early so your child receives these two vaccines by the first day of school in August.
Eleven-year-olds entering 6th grade in Indiana are now required to receive the meningitis vaccine and an up-dated tetnus/pertussis vaccine known as “Tdap.” The “tetnus booster” cannot be received until after the 10th or 11th birthday (depending on the drug manufac-turer). This vaccine has dramatically lowered the num-ber of pertussis cases in middle school and high school students in Indiana. Make sure BOTH vaccines are received before entering 6th grade.
Parents please ask your health care provider for a copy of the immunization record to bring to school. We must have documentation of the vaccine. Ques-tions? Call the school nurse, 896-5582, press 2, or send an e-mail to [email protected].
