PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. The key theme of this season is
repentance, and it is a time to saying sorry for all those things that have spoiled our
lives, hurt others and broken our relationship with God. Only through repentance can
friendship with God be restored and Christians be ready for the mystery and miracle
of Easter.
Some of the palm crosses from the previous year are carefully burned to create ash.
During the worship, people are signed with an ash cross on their foreheads as a sign
that they truly want to repent. In Baptism, Christians are signed with a 'water' cross on
their foreheads. That marks a new beginning in Christ. The cross of ashes on the
forehead marks a decision to say sorry for what has been done wrong and to get ready
to make a fresh start with Jesus again.

St Luke’s School acknowledges the Whadjuk people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which our school is situated.
Lenten Prayer We fast from judging others, But feast on patience We fast from apparent differences, But feast on unity of all life We fast from words that pollute, But feast on words that affirm We fast from complaining, But feast on appreciation We fast from bitterness and anger, But feast on forgiveness and mercy We fast from discouragement, But feast on hope, We fast from idle gossip But feast on purposeful silence We fast from problems that overwhelm But feast on prayer that strengthens. Congratulations to all the children who attended today’s Ash Wednesday Mass. Thank you to
Father Francisco for celebrating Mass with us and teaching us that Lent is about Prayer,
Alms-giving and Fasting (giving something up we really enjoy e.g. chocolate or ice-cream) for
Lent.
School Routines Let me congratulate all the students for their efforts last week. It was pleasing to see the children return to
school procedures and formalities with such ease. The participation and reverence displayed by the students at
our Beginning of School Year Mass and today’s Ash Wednesday Mass has highlighted this transition and was
most commendable.
Evening on the Green
It was also wonderful to see quite a number of families in attendance last Friday. I wish to sincerely thank the
following people for helping make last Friday a wonderful community event:
Rebecca Mackie for coordinating the evening with pizzazz;
Shobukan Karate - Supplying us with their bouncy castle free of
charge;
Carrissa Merton and Lauren Renshaw – for organising the amazing
raffle prizes and selling them all night;
Perth Kids Party Hire - Supplying us with all of the kids toys and
games free of charge and,
Pizza Hut, Woodvale - Delivering Pizzas at a discounted price
This representation was tremendous as it is vital that our children see the importance that Mum and Dad place
on these school celebrations. There is no doubt the students appreciate having their parents in attendance
whenever possible.
Parent Information Evenings It was fantastic to see so many parents attend the Parent Information Evenings on Monday and Tuesday. The
opportunity for parents to come together to initially hear about the Vision and Focus for 2018, and then to be
informed by their child’s class teacher about some key aspects of the particular year level is most valuable.
In talking with parents over the course of the evening there was a real sense of positivity and excitement.
Many thanks to the teachers and staff for their efforts in conducting these evenings.
School Priorities 2018 A copy of the outline of the School Priorities 2018 is now on the school website. This information was shared at
the Parent Information Nights on Monday and Tuesday.
Valentine’s Day Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1
John 4:8
Each of us who has a special story to tell; the story that reflects our
life, our journey and the people that have shared the journey with us.
On Valentine’s Day, we remember to acknowledge those around us
by simple gestures that show those we love, our appreciation each
day.
Every 14 February, we celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving flowers, chocolates and cards to those we love. We
do this in honour of Saint Valentine. But who is St Valentine?

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE ...continued
Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. There was an emperor at that time by the name of
Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those who were married. With this
thought in mind, he outlawed marriage for young men in the hopes of building a stronger military base. Valentine
decided this decree just wasn’t fair and chose to marry young couples secretly.
Too often, St Valentine’s Day is a rush to buy gifts rather than a time to thank God for love in one’s own life.
The following prayer for St Valentine’s Day offers an opportunity to invite God into St Valentine’s Day:
God of love,
Thank you for those who I love.
Let Your compassion, generosity and power continue to shine
in my life long after the flowers and chocolates are gone,
that I and all who I love might remember
that You love us, now and always.
Amen.
Did You Know……?As part of Making Jesus Real in our school and community, I wish to acknowledge and
highlight the brilliance of three St Luke’s students, Xavier, Jayden and Oliver who have very different sets of
gifts and talents to celebrate:
Xavier Collins and some of his training/swim club buddies from St Hildas Swim
Club, competed in the Busselton Jetty Swim in the 4 person teams event. This was an
open ages race and their team of 11 year olds came in first, completing the race in
55mins. The only team to crack the 1 hour barrier. Beating all adult and teenager teams.
Xavier has swum competitively since he was 9 years old and currently swims for St
Hilda’s Swim Club, training 5 days a week.
Over the last 2 years Xavier has competed in both the short and long course state
championships winning medals in multiple events. Xavier has won Gold medals in:
• 50m and 100m Freestyle and in the process breaking a 9 year old state record for 50m
freestyle, becoming the only 10 year old boy in Western Australia to break the 30
second barrier.
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in
50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke
Xavier (right) with his brother Kai • 50m and 100m Butterfly
Last year in December, Xavier competed in the Pan Pacific School games in Adelaide representing Western Australia,
where he swam against competitors from all over Australia and the Pacific regions. Xavier swam in multiple events and
made the national final in 50m butterfly, 50m and 100m freestyle. Missing out on a medal in the 100m final by 0.2 of a
second.
He then went onto Victoria a week later to swim in the Victorian State Age Championships, making the finals once
again. Xavier is hoping to be selected to swim for WA again this year in July/August in Tasmania.
Jayden Tatasciore spent the last two weeks of the school holidays in America. He was
invited as an artist to perform at The NAMM Show, (National Association of Music
Merchants), which is the world’s largest trade event for the music industry. He enjoyed
playing at the many booths, sampling and exhibiting guitars and equipment.
Whilst in America, one if his Facebook videos achieved 5.6 million views.
From this, Jayden was contacted by Channel 7’s Today Tonight program for a story that
will air this Thursday night 6:30pm.
Jayden regularly makes a cameo appearance with a local ACDC tribute band. He also will
be performing on Saturday night for Bonfest Freo with Angry Anderson, Bob Spencer
(from the Angels) and Mark Evans (former ACDC bass player).

Oliver Vrebac is travelling to Tasmania on the 22nd of February 2018 on behalf of
the P2P Academy to represent a WA select team against the select teams of all the
other states. Oliver is the only 2007 born player to be selected for this team as the rest
of the selection is 2006 born. So that makes him the youngest player in the tournament.
He is very proud of that and comes as a great reward for his efforts. He trains really
hard almost every day of the week and is in love with the sport. Oliver is currently
playing for Joondalup United. He was also selected to go play in Spain and Portugal
last year. A month prior to flying out to Spain he broke his arm at school and wasn't
able to participate which left him heart broken for a long time.
He has been playing soccer since he was 5 years old. In the last few years he has been
playing at a very high level; 2or 3 years above his age group. But this year he decided
to play only one age group above, as his injuries were quite serious in those years. He
lives to play soccer, that's all he ever wants to do and he has a ball with him everywhere
he goes. Oliver even sleeps with all his soccer ball under his bed.
Congratulations Xavier, Jayden and Oliver. Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with us.

Project Compassion - Caritas Ash Wednesday today marks the beginning of Lent, and also the beginning of Project Compassion. Caritas
Australia’s annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal, Project Compassion brings thousands of
Australians together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.
As part of Lent, we are encouraged to pray, fast and give alms. Caritas Australia's Project Compassion provides an
avenue for us to give alms in the form of donations to assist those with less than us. Today, each child from Year
1-6 will bring home a money box to fill over the Lenten period. Children and families are encouraged to give as
much as they can afford to support this fantastic Catholic organisation. In class, children will be watching and
learning more about the stories from the Project Compassion website, to give them a better understanding of where
the money raised goes.
