ELT Frequency IssueELT Frequency Issue

• On February 1, 2009, the satellite system will discontinue monitoring the 121.5/243-MHz frequencies. The current ELTs will still be legal from the FAA's perspective but will provide extremely limited assistance in a crashes, especially in remote areas.

• AOPA opposes mandated replacement and supports the installation of these advanced ELTs on a voluntary basis. The association supports the education of pilots and aircraft owners as to the limits of 121.5/243-MHz ELTs and the benefits of 406-MHz units.

• Recommend waiting to see if Ameri-king produces a 406-MHz ELT that will replace our current Ameri-king ELT.

ADS-B ImplementationADS-B Implementation

• On August 30, the FAA awarded a contract to ITT Corp. to build and operate the ADS-B ground infrastructure and supply aircraft position data to the FAA. One month later, the FAA issued proposed rules that would require all aircraft to add ADS-B equipment by 2020 to be able to fly within Class B and C airspace and above 10,000 feet.)

• We have 14 years to comply but may want to add ADS-B capability to get weather and traffic data when service is available in St Louis Area

ADS-B ServicesADS-B Services

• ADS-B provides:– Traffic Information Services – (TIS-B)

• Broadcasts aircraft traffic data for non-ADS-B equipped aircraft

– Flight Information Services – (FIS-B)• Provides graphical National Weather Service products &

temporary flight restriction data

– ADS-B• Transmits aircraft position, heading, speed, altitude,

aircraft category, call sign to anyone with appropriate receiving equipment

Main benefit to us is free weather and traffic broadcast

GDL-90 ADS-B ReceiverGDL-90 ADS-B Receiver

• Current benefits of the GDL 90 include more extensive and tactical surveillance data for traffic and hazard avoidance. This includes the ability to receive continuous detailed weather information, as well as Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) data and TIS-B traffic/ conflict information (uplinked from ground radar). Being able to see and react to the same traffic picture that controllers are watching on their radar scopes provides an extra margin of safety in the air. And since the government plans to offer this data free of charge, the added safety comes at a real savings over similar commercial uplink services.

Currently priced at $7,000Price should go down in the future

22ndnd Aircraft? Aircraft?

• Members have expressed interest in obtaining a second, faster aircraft for cross country flights while retaining current aircraft.

• Many clubs have two aircraft, one for lower cost local flights and currency, and one for longer cross country trips– Review of 29 flying clubs shows average club has:

• 2.7 planes• 38 members (13.9 members per plane)
