Meal Prep & Distribution

Work Camp 2020 was not one that we expected, however, God works in mysterious ways, and we were able to make the most out of the circumstances we were presented with.

Since Work Camp transitioned from a Diocesan effort to a parish effort, we were left to brainstorm ideas of projects that were safe & effective, given the new restrictions due to COVID-19.

A large portion of our efforts went to meal distribution, which we determined was safe, effective, and practical. Our teens prepped, cooked, and packaged over 900 meals to give to United Communities and other local food pantries in the area.

Picnic Table Construction

For our second project, our teens constructed and donated picnic tables to Bishop Ireton High School, in order to replace their old and broken tables behind their football fields.

Thanks to our skilled contractors (Stephen Clement. Larry Ferguson) they were able to instruct the teens on how to properly measure, cut, and sand the wood into the necessary pieces, that were then assembled into the final product.

Deck Demolition and Reconstruction

This was the largest of our projects, and it involved the complete demolition of an existing deck, which had been rendered unstable due to rotting wood.

Once the existing deck was demolished, concrete was laid down and the teens began work on a brand new deck.

Similar to how ants distribute their work among their many hands, the teens had an assembly line mentality, and were able to accomplish tasks quickly and effectively.

This deck project was the most visible representation of the original mission of Work Camp; members of the young Church coming together to serve the needs of members in their community.

Thank you for your prayers…

Through heat, sweat, and masks, these teens carried out the mission of the Church by serving those in our local communities, which would not have been possible without your help.

We would like to extend a very big thank you to all those who have chosen to support our efforts through your thoughts, prayers, and donations.

Dear Friends,

In the document entitled “Sacrosanctum Concilium” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Vatican Council II, 1963), it states: "Let pastors of souls take care that the primary Hours, especially Vespers, be celebrated communally in the church on Sundays and more solemn feasts. It is also to be commended that the laity themselves recite the Divine Office, whether with priests, or gathered among themselves, or even each one alone.”

The Liturgy of the Hours is comprised of five “hours” (Office of Readings, Lauds, Daytime Prayer, Vespers, and Night Prayer). Priests and Consecrated Religious pray these hours as part of their religious vocation. But the Liturgy of the Hours is also available to the laity as a means of sanctifying the day.

Evening Prayer, or “Vespers,” is especially highlighted in the passage cited above. And so I am very happy to inform you that “Solemn Vespers” will now become part of our weekly schedule! EVERY FRIDAY (beginning August 21) we will have “Solemn Vespers” from 7pm to 7:30pm, with organ and cantor. Vespers consists of an opening hymn, 3 psalms, a brief reading, a brief homily, silent meditation, petitions, Our Father, and Benediction with the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Mark your calendars! Solemn Vespers offers a reverent, meditative, and beautiful experience of prayer!

Please note that our patronal feast day will be celebrated the weekend of August 22 and August 23. (It is permitted to transfer the patronal feast day, which is August 25, to the nearest weekend.) The prayer and readings for the Masses that weekend will be taken from the Memorial of St. Louis, King of France.

A special word of congratulations to the Poor Clares who celebrate their patronal feast day on Tuesday, August 11. St. Clare, pray for us!

Prayer for the Homebound

Lord, you have a special love for those who are weak, infirm, and dependent. Bless the homebound parishioners of our parish as they carry their daily crosses. May our prayers bring them strength and consolation, and the

Sacraments sanctify and inspire them. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

This week we pray especially for the following homebound parishioners: Francisca Leynes, Helen Machonis, Virginia Masse, Douglas McCollum, Abbie Moore, and Pascal Munyampara.
