Third Sunday of Easter
WALKING WITH JESUS
In the gospel of today, we are told that two disciples of Jesus were travelling from Jerusalem to a village called, Emmaus. While they were walking and conversing with each other, Jesus joined them but they did not recognize him. Jesus explained the word of God concerning his mission, suffering, death, and resurrection to them and clarified their doubts.
They enjoyed the company of Jesus so much so that they requested him to stay the night with them. While they were at table, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. As soon as they received the bread from Jesus, they recognized him. It was a joyful moment for the disciples of Jesus. The disciples left at once for Jerusalem in order to share their encounter with Jesus on the way and at the table with the other disciples.
This encounter between Jesus and disciples after his death and resurrection on their way to Emmaus was very joyful, fulfilling and confirmed the resurrection of Jesus to them. In the same way, Peter, in the first reading, stood up and raised his voice and proclaimed that Jesus was sent by God to perform mighty deeds, wonders, and signs but he was killed by wicked people. However, to fulfil the prophecy of David that “his soul will never be abandon to the netherworld and experience corruption”, God raise him from the tomb. Peter in his speech confirmed that Jesus is the son of God, the savior of the world. And they were witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the death. In addition, the second reading confirmed the death and resurrection of Jesus by saying that we were ransomed with the precious blood of Jesus Christ, a spotless and unblemished Lamb.
We too we are in a journey like the disciples from this earthly life to eternal life in heaven. Jesus is walking with us always but, most time we do not recognized him. Sometimes we are blinded and distracted by too much work, worries, doubts, confusion, fear, and worldly desires. Before the disciples recognized Jesus at table, they expressed doubts and asked several questions regarding what happened to Jesus. We are call to ask questions about our faith journey so that we get and receive explanations that will make us know and understand, and believe in him. Let us invite Jesus to journey with us and lead us to his eternal kingdom. During this difficult time in our world let us invite Jesus to heal, comfort, to have mercy and cleanse in our world. Let us be bold like the disciples to proclaim the gospel of Christ and share the joy of Easter with people in the world.
