IMPORTANT DATES

Well the “Village” certainly has been active again: school photos, parent teacher interviews, Dad’s Day, new Reception students transitioning, staff attending professional development opportunities, JP students attending a performance in the Barossa, School Board meeting, Road Safety presentation here at school, cricket carnival, pupil free day (staff working on Assessment & Reporting) and, finally, Sporting Colours Day. All that in a 2 week period!!

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWSFirstly, I would like to thank the staff for the time they spent preparing for Parent Teacher Interviews and, secondly, for the time they commit to the evenings. I trust you were able to celebrate the successes of your child or set learning/social goals to enable them to be more successful.

Unfortunately some parents missed notes about the Parent Teacher Interviews, missed set interview times, or sent interview time requests in well after the cut-off time.

I have reviewed our processes here:

• dates were published in the calendar which was sent home in Week 1.

• invitation for Parent Teacher Interview was sent home with newsletter Week 3.

• confirmation of interviews were sent home in Week 6.

All of this information was also on our website (apart from the last point). I’m not sure what more we can do to improve this process. Communication needs to be a two-way process.

NAPLANLast week the Year 3, 5 & 7 NAPLAN results were sent home with students. Once again our results were significantly higher than the state and national average. NAPLAN is a one-off snapshot of the Literacy & Numeracy of these children. The teaching staff will review the results and look for areas of strength or areas which need attention. If you would like to discuss your child’s results, please contact either the class teacher or myself.

DAD’S DAYOnce again our Dad’s Day was extremely well supported. We are currently reviewing the feedback for the event and will use this to inform actions for future Dads’ Days. Special thanks to those who catered for the lunch.

PROGRAM ACHIEVE

THANK YOU to all our dads and other significant males who contributed so enthusiastically to the resounding success of Dad’s Day 2014. It was very impressive to see over 140 dads and other significant males, interacting so positively with their children, staff and each other. The day was a strong affirmation to the children that you care and are interested and involved in their education.

The feedback from staff and students echoed the views of the dads as to the importance of having such opportunities to engage dads with their children’s learning.

We will look to ways to use the positive momentum that the day generated and continue to build on the partnership with parents.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU also to the dedicated team of mums who took up the not insignificant task of providing a delicious lunch for 400 PLUS people!

The Staff St Joseph’s School.

Confidence(continued)

In our last newsletter wenoted that a good way to promote confidence in our children is to teach them that the way we think about what we are doing will influence how confident we feel, and our ultimate degree of success.

Positive habits of the mind (e.g. accepting myself and taking risks) help build confidence while negative habits of the mind (e.g. self-downing, needing to be perfect) act as blockers or barriers to success. Other positive habits of the mind that help to build confidence include:

BeingIndependentv Needing Constant Approval

• Encourage them to speak their own opinions and try new things (have a go) and not worry too much what others think.

• Ask them to check with their catastrophe scales how bad it really is when someone puts them down or laughs at their attempts at something new.

• Explain the motto ‘sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me’.

• Carefully explain that while it is important to be liked, no one needs to be liked all the time by everyone.

• For dependent children who are overly concerned about making mistakes and constantly ask questions or seek reassurance, use the Praise, Prompt and Leave approach.

Praise them for knowing something about the topic/ problem at hand. Provide the next step for them and then leave them to it, reassuring them that they can do the rest.

I Can Do It v I Can’t Do It

• Discuss the difference between Optimistic and Pessimistic ways of thinking. Explain that optimism involves forecasting success even when the task may seem too hard. Pessimists predict failure at these times.

• I Can Do It thinkers remind themselves of other work where they have been successful when they are not successful at something. I Can’t Do It thinkers tend to think they are totally bad at everything when they have difficulty with their work.

• Allow children to Stretch, Struggle and Succeed. They need to have a go, persevere and know that although teachers and parents will always help them if they have to, completing their work independently is their responsibility. Do not protect them from work that is hard.

AROUND THE SCHOOLT20 CRICKET BLASTWell done to the students who participated in the T20 Cricket Blast last Thursday at the Clare High School. This was a regional T20 cricket competition (8 players per side) for all the local schools. St Joseph’s entered a Yr 6 and a Yr 7 boys’ team and two Yr 6/7 girls’ teams.

The boys’ teams both had successful days, neither losing a game. The Yr 7 boys’ team won the day and now have the opportunity to compete in Adelaide in Term 4 at the State Carnival. The girls’ teams had mixed results but enjoyed the opportunity to play some cricket.

A big thank you to Mark Sims, Annie Pitt, Roger Graham and Tim Grigg who looked after the teams on the day.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

After School Table Tennis Monday night was the last session of table tennis for Term 3 so it was fitting to hold a Championship Night. Each of the 16 players was given a ranking and then placed into a knockout draw. The stakes were high and the quality of table tennis was exceptional.

No. 7 seed, Riley Treloar, had the hardest first round opponent coming up against top seed, Henry Hawker. It was a tense game and both players had their chances but in the end Henry won 11-7. Tom Kelly was in good form early on beating Kelsie MacDonald in his first round and then taking care of the dangerous Declan O'Dea in the second.

After two rounds we had four players undefeated and it was semi-final time. In the first semi-final we had the top seed, Henry 'Mr Consistent' Hawker, against third seed, Tom 'Leftie' Kelly. The scores were neck and neck until Henry belted two winners in a row to seal the game 12-10. In the second semi-final No. 2 seed, Patrick 'The Gifted' Nugent, went up against the 15th seed, Harry 'The Rampaging' Redden. Harry had been in blistering form during the earlier rounds and this game was going to be a cracker. Patrick got the jump in the game and held on for a hard fought win (11-5).

Now it was grand final time and the top two seeds had made it through to the championship play-off. The boys both looked nervous and the crowd was sitting on the edge of their seats. The game had everything, super defence by both players and when they had the chance they both showed the killer instinct. However, in the end there can be only one winner and that was Patrick Nugent who won 21-18. Congratulations Patty!

Well done to all students who participated in table tennis this term. I was super impressed by your enthusiasm to learn and, more importantly, the manner in which you conducted yourself throughout Championship Night; the sportsmanship was brilliant. From Mr Slattery.

LUNCH BOXES

Packing a healthy lunch your children will enjoy day in and day out certainly isn’t an easy task. It’s hard to keep coming up with fresh ideas for packed lunches for the 20 or so school days there are in a month. No wonder we often rely on the same old lunch recipe favourites. Here are a few ideas. I’m sure you’ve heard some of them before but I’m hoping you’ll find a few new ideas to inspire you.

Change The Bread

For a change from everyday sandwich use soft tortillas for wraps, bagels, English muffins, pita pockets or fresh baked rolls.

Create Your Own Snack Mix

Use a selection of small flavourful crackers, cereal, dried fruit or pretzels. Just about anything goes. Experiment with different mixes and pre-package in individual zip lock bags.

Try Different Sandwich Fillings Alter the sandwich fillings. Consider combinations like diced chicken and corn, ham and avocado, grated carrot and cheddar cheese, or cream cheese.

Don't Forget The Veggies To ensure your child gets their daily requirement of vegetables cut up a selection of carrot sticks and celery sticks. Consider also other veggies like cucumber, ears of baby corn, cherry tomatoes, and zucchini. Pack a small container of dip.

Fruit Cubes and Cheesy Bites Cut up different pieces of fruit and package in a plastic container. Use fruit or vanilla yogurt as a tasty dip. Cheese cubes and grapes make a nice snack or lunch dessert. Pineapple and apple slices dipped in lemon juice also go well with cheese. Mini Muffins Kids love things that come in small packages. So think ‘mini’ – small muffins and bagels. Vary flavours to avoid boredom.

Thoughts from Home Leave cookie cutter impressions on your child’s sandwich. A love heart from home could make their day. Occasionally pack something extra special in your child’s lunch box like a note saying I love you or even a simple smiley face.

Beyond Sandwiches If your child is tired of bread in any form, consider crackers. Pack a few crackers in your child’s lunch box along with a side of cheese and ham slices. Kind of like a homemade lunch, only healthier. Be sure to package the crackers, cheese and meat separately.
