COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

SACRED AND SECULAR CELEBRATIONS During the Term 1 school holiday break there are two important commemorations – the Christian feast of Easter and the secular commemoration of ANZAC Day. While it may seem at first that the two are poles apart, the reality is that they have common themes around bravery in facing death, overcoming suffering, selfless sacrifice and a message of hope. Easter is the high point of the Christian calendar as we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. Hope underpins this great Christian feast. St Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:14 reminds us that Christ died for all and that He has no favourites whether we be rich or poor, male or female and so on. Easter also gives hope to those suffering pain. The physical suffering of Jesus demonstrates that he understands both physical and emotional pain. The resurrection proved his victory over pain, suffering and death and gives us the assurance of his compassion and love for each of us. Hope in the power to change ourselves and the world we live in for the better is also imbedded in the Easter message. Our belief is that Christ died so that we may no longer give way to selfishness but live with a focus on others. Christ’s command was to ‘love others as He has loved us’. This year Easter falls on the middle weekend of the Term break. As we take a break from school and work and celebrate this great Christian feast, we would do well to remember those who have lost hope because of hardship, suffering, broken relationships or emotional trauma. May we be inspired by the message of Easter to reach out to others and help them to find new hope and healing. ANZAC Day falls on the Friday of the second week of the school holiday break. Once again this year students and staff from our four secondary schools will be participating in the march and commemoration at the cenotaph in Port Macquarie. Participants are asked to assemble outside the Beau Thai restaurant on the corner of Horton and William Streets at 9.30am. Our SAPSS contingent will be led by the Drum Corp down Horton Street to the cenotaph on the Town Green for the 11.00am commemoration. This year two of our senior students have been given the exceptional honour of delivering the occasional address at these community celebrations. Michael Lutton will speak at the Dawn Service and Daniel Magnusson will speak at the 11.00am service. We look forward to seeing a large representation from our school communities at both these ceremonies on ANZAC Day. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

Congratulations Allegra

Last year, Year Ten student Allegra Trevanion's poem 'War' was selected for publication in 'Dream Big', an anthology of poems and short stories selected from students from around Australia. The poem was written as a Year Nine English class task based on the novel 'Private Peaceful' by Michael Morpurgo. Allegra has received her very own copy of 'Dream Big' with her poem in it, and her name proudly listed above our own College name.

Allegra shows much promise as a writer; and her skill and application in English make her one to watch out for in the future.

Students return in Term 2 wearing their Winter Uniform, including College tie.. (Many students have grown quite considerably over the past twelve months.) I would encourage families to ensure they are prepared for this transition.

Girls’ Skirt Length: the skirt is to the knee, this means on the knee not above it!!

Boys’ Shirts: the shirts need to have a button on the collar which is done up! Also the shirt needs to be long enough to be tucked in so it stays in!! Some shirts only just make it, and consequently come out!!

Long Pants: it is not compulsory for boys to wear long pants in winter but if they do, they need to be Midford Deluxe College Baggies please.

Boy’s Shorts: If boys choose to wear the shorts it is important that they are the Midford Deluxe College Baggies please.

ANZAC Day – Friday, 25th April 2014 Special contribution by students of St Joseph’s Regional College This year we encourage all students to represent the College Community on ANZAC Day. Not only is this a great opportunity to show respect for the men and women who served our country to help preserve our democratic way of life, but also a wonderful opportunity for students to be recognised for their citizenship and sense of loyalty to St Joseph’s Regional College. The time spent representing the College can be counted towards students’ Community Service Record and on the Principal’s Reference for Year 11 and 12 students. All students marching will meet outside Beau Thai Restaurant on the corner of Horton Street and William Street between 9.15am and 9.30 am. Students are asked to wear their full winter uniform, including the College tie and bring their school hat or cap. YEAR 7 PARENT AND STUDENT LITURGY Thank you to all the families who were able to join our celebration at St Agnes Parish Church on Tuesday evening. Working in partnership as parents, college and church communities is at the heart of our College community. The students should be congratulated on their participation and sharing their gifts in the different roles of the prayer service. Thank you, to Miss West, the Year 7 Religious Education teachers, Mrs Johnson and Mr Blackmore for their assistance with the liturgy. YEAR 11 STREET RETREAT – A PENTECOST EXPERIENCE For a number of years, the Lismore Diocese has run overnight retreat activities for Parish School Students in Years 9, 10 and 11. These gatherings aim to bring Catholic secondary students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate and meet with other young people who practice their faith.

In 2014, St Joseph’s Regional College Year 11 students will join students from each of the other diocesan secondary schools in attending a “Street Retreat.”

Participants in the Street Retreat will spend from Thursday night 19th June to Sunday evening 22nd June working with a range of social justice initiatives in Brisbane. Their participation may make a small contribution to those being served – but the event is first and foremost an exercise in faith development.

Participants will find the activities on the street retreat challenging and possibly confronting. Many activities run either very late at night or very early in the morning. The retreat will culminate in a celebration of Sunday Eucharist.

In discerning which students might participate in this retreat experience, the diocese has recommended the following selection criteria;

• Catholic students who can demonstrate involvement in their parish. • Catholic students who have attended previous student faith leadership retreats. e.g. Festa

Christi, Shine, Ignite, SVDP. • Students who exhibit the following attributes:

- a strong sense of social justice - initiative - common sense - a mature character

A large number of students have already expressed an interest in this event. We can, however, only offer 6 places. Next term this will be presented to students at a year assembly and any student who would like to be considered will be asked to write a brief statement supporting their nomination.

NEWS FROM PARISH ADMINISTRATION School Fees Review Central to the review of school fees has been the removal of the Building Fund Levy and the establishment of one single fee. As you would be aware, school fees are a very critical factor in supporting the operating costs of all Parish schools. In the process of moving towards one single school fee in 2015, it is important that the new school fees’ model is both equitable and affordable. Discounts for early payment and having multiple children enrolled in our schools will still apply. Fee assistance for those who may be experiencing financial difficulties will still be available. It is anticipated that the new 2015 fee structure will be finalised and communicated in the coming weeks.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST- Youth Boot Camp

Michael Gilmour is the Youth Hub Coordinator and is calling for Expressions of Interest from any young people aged between 12 to 18 years to take part in a youth boot camp. The boot camp would run before school on a Tuesday morning 7am to 8am. Commencing Tuesday 29th April.

STUDENT SERVICES NEWS At the request of the Australian Government, data will be collected this year on those students who are receiving adjustments and meet the definition of disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. The handout below fully explains this process. If you DO NOT want your child included in this data collection please contact the school immediately. If you would like further clarification on this process please do not hesitate to ring me at the College on 5525 4100.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/CARERS Schools across Australia are taking part in a new national data collection on school students with disability. The data collection is being introduced in stages over three years, and started in 2013. From 2015, this information will be collected in every school across Australia, every year. All Australian governments have agreed to this. WHAT IS THE BENEFIT FOR MY CHILD? - All Australian governments agree that every child in an Australian school should have a high quality education. It shouldn’t matter what the individual child’s circumstances are – every child should have the same opportunity to succeed at school. The aim of this new data collection is to have better information about school students with disability in Australia. Better information about school students with disability will help teachers, principals and education authorities to support students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability.

WHY IS THIS DATA BEING COLLECTED?- There is nothing new about schools collecting information about students with disability – in fact, schools have had to do this by law for some time. But the type of information currently collected varies between each state and territory. With the new data collection, every school in Australia will use the same method to collect this information – that is, a government school in suburban Sydney will collect and report data in the same way as a Catholic school in country Victoria and an independent school in the Northern Territory. The information provided through this new national data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources to benefit students with disability. It will help to put the right supports in place for students with disability so that they have the same opportunities for a high quality education as students without a disability.

WHAT ARE SCHOOLS REQUIRED TO DO? -Every school in Australia is likely to have a student with disability at some point. Schools need to be able to support students with disability by removing any obstacles for them to participate in their education. By law, schools are required to make reasonable adjustments where needed to assist students with disability. These responsibilities are outlined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. This means that schools need to talk to the student and/or their parent/carer about reasonable adjustments. These are things the schools do now and this won’t change. The new data collection will record students who have been identified by a school team as meeting the definition of disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and provided with an adjustment.

WHAT IS AN ADJUSTMENT? -An adjustment is a measure or action taken to help a student with disability participate in education on the same basis as other students. Adjustments can be made across the whole school setting (like ramps into classrooms), in the classroom and at an individual student level (like extra tuition for a student with a learning difficulty).

WHAT INFORMATION WILL BE COLLECTED? - YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL WILL COLLECT AND REPORT INFORMATION EVERY YEAR ABOUT: • the level of adjustment provided • the number of students who receive each level of adjustment • where known, the student’s broad type of disability. Some students who are not provided with an adjustment at the time of the collection will meet the definition of disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and will be eligible to be included in the data collection.

WHO WILL COLLECT MY CHILD’S INFORMATION? - Teachers and other school staff from your child’s school will collect the above information based on: • consultation with parents/carers • the school team’s observations and professional judgements • any medical diagnosis • other relevant information. School principals are responsible for making sure that the information collected about each student is accurate.

HOW WILL MY CHILD’S PRIVACY BE PROTECTED? - Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all children and their families is very important. With the new data collection, this will be done in the following ways: • Personal or confidential information will not be given to anyone not authorised to see it. • When the information is sent by your child’s school to the local or federal education authority for combination with information from other

schools, it will be by school only – student names will not be recorded as part of the data collection. • When the information is reported from 2016 onwards, it will be by school only – student names will not be recorded as part of the data

collection. WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE DATA BE AVAILABLE? - When all Australian schools are taking part in the new data collection, the information will be reported on the My School website from 2016 onwards. It will be by school only – no student names are recorded as part of the data collection.

CAN I DECIDE WHETHER MY CHILD’S INFORMATION IS INCLUDED IN THE NATIONAL DATA COLLECTION? - It’s your decision about whether you want your child’s information to be included in the national reporting or not. Including every school child who is being provided with an adjustment because of disability in this new national data collection each year will help schools, education authorities and governments to better meet students’ needs. Your school will tell you what you need to do if you don’t want to have your child’s information included in the national data collection. Even if your child’s information is not included in the national data collection, your school is still required to provide support to your child with disability and any adjustments that may be needed to help him/her participate at school.

MUSIC NEWS DARWIN MUSIC TOUR All members who are attending the Music Tour to Darwin will be rehearsing after school on Wednesdays next term from 4.00pm – 5.00pm. We only have 8 weeks before we leave for Darwin so these rehearsals are really important. If you haven't received your last note about these and the 2 Sunday rehearsals please email me ASAP On Wednesday, week 2, 7th May, rehearsal will be extended until 6.00pm. This will be followed by a parent meeting for all people who are participating in this tour. We will be handing out final itineraries and answering any queries that people might have. This meeting will be held in the PAC. JOHN MORRISON WORSHOP Last Wednesday, the music students had a wonderful treat when John Morrison and his jazz-singing wife, Jacki Cooper, led the students in some wonderful music making. They worked with the College Jazz Band and Vocal Group and also the year 10 Music Elective Class. John also gave some private drum lessons and Jacki some singing lessons. These workshops were preparing the students for the upcoming Darwin Music Tour and the Big Band Blast, which is being held in town on the weekend of May 30th.

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS BARDS & MINSTRELS- Classical Music and Shakespeare Performance evening Parents and friends were well entertained on Wednesday evening in ‘ye olde’ bard & minstrel style.

Year 10 ‘Music Minstrels” performed an array of instruments in the classical repertoire. While our Year 9 & 10 ‘Drama Bards’ entertained the audience with traditional Shakespearean performances from ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’ as well as presenting ‘contemporary’ interpretations of ‘Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet and the Taming of the Shrew’. It was a fitting way to celebrate the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare.

Congratulations to all our talented performers and thank you to family and friends who were able to attend.

LIBRARY NEWS Term 1 Photography Competition – My Town In 2013, we conducted three separate photography competitions across the year, and they were all very popular and attracted some exceptional entries. This term, our photography competition is themed ‘My Town’, and we already have some great, artistic entries. All of these are displayed in a gallery in the Library, and uploaded to the St Joseph’s Regional College Library FaceBook page. The competition closes on Friday 11 April (the last day of term), and the judges then start on the difficult task of selecting a winner. First prize will be a canvas print of the first-placegetter’s photograph, and there will also be minor prizes. This week, we showcase Amelia Stennett’s glorious view at Wauchope. A New Face This week, and in the first week of Term 2, we have the pleasure of Mrs Michelle Lawler’s company in the Library. She is a teacher at St Peter’s Primary School in Port Macquarie, and is undertaking a practicum with us as she completes her Masters in Education (Teacher Librarianship) with Charles Sturt University. It has been both exciting and affirming having Michelle working with us as she is ‘newly minted’, and not only does she have great ideas to share with us, but confirms that the philosophies, practices and tools adopted by us at our College Library are up to the mark and cutting edge. Students at St Joseph’s Regional College are very fortunate to have access to the depth and breadth of resources and technologies that they do. The College is in receipt of NSW School Pupil Identification Cards which are issued to students who have reached 16 years of age and over. These cards permit students to travel at the discounted rate of fare on all CityRail trains, State Transit buses and government ferries for journeys to and from sport, evening, weekend and vacation travel. Concession cards will also be available for country and interstate rail journeys on Countrylink services.

Cards are available from the College office and are valid to 31st March 2015. Students under 16 do not require a concession card.

CANTEEN NEWS CHANGES TO MENU At the start of Term 2, the canteen will no longer be selling Large Flavoured Milks. This has been a Food Services Committee decision in conjunction with the College due to the concern of the high sugar content in this product. Success for Paige Leonhardt Paige Leonhardt participated in the Australian Swimming Championships in QLD. She achieved 11 personal best times (pbs) from 12 races. Two 6th place finishes and four top 4th spots. Paige continued her success late into the night coming 3rd in the 50 breast. Paige is now 2.6 seconds off the world record in the 50 breast. Congratulations on your bronze medal, Paige. The Athlete’s Foot- Back to School Program We would sincerely like to thank The Athlete’s Foot who has donated $90.00 to our College from their ‘Back-to-School’ program.
