COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

WITNESS TO GRATITUDE The apostle Paul is a great role model when it comes to witnessing to and expressing gratitude. Despite the hardships he endured and years of imprisonment bound in chains, he constantly expressed his gratitude to God and to the people he ministered to and reminded them to ”Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks” (Thessalonians 5.18).

We have so much for which to be thankful. We live in a beautiful town, have the opportunity to attend great schools and enjoy a standard of living that places us among the best countries in the world to live in. Despite this, we can be tempted to focus only on the extra things we may want and compare ourselves with others who may appear to be better off, better looking, better at sport or school. Eric Hoffer, philosopher and author, reminds us that ‘the hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings”.

Gratitude is one of the first things we teach our children. How often do you hear parents reminding a toddler to ‘say ta!’. Despite this, we often forget this basic lesson we teach our infant children.

There are also some very good reasons to practice gratitude from a health and wellbeing perspective. Positive psychology research shows the following:

• Cultivating gratitude generates increased levels of well-being and happiness; • Gratitude is associated with increased energy levels, optimism and empathy; • Gratitude honours others and enables us to ‘walk humbly’; and • Gratitude makes us look outwards and become less self centred.

A true Christian community must have gratitude as one of its foundational values. The challenge is for each of us to look for opportunities to be thankful for all the blessings we have received and to strengthen the culture of gratitude in our families and within our school communities.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Inaugural College Mass On Thursday, the College community gathered with Fr. James to celebrate our Inaugural College Mass. The theme for our Mass drew upon our College theme of “Witness”. In his homily, Fr. James reminded everyone in the College community that we are called to witness our faith each day in many different ways. Fr. James affirmed the College community for the tremendous sense of service shown by staff and students here at St Joseph’s Regional College.

I would like to thank Fr. James, Year 11 Coordinator, Mr David Lewis, our Leader of Evangelisation and Catechesis, Ms Swain and Assistant Coordinator Mrs Helen Gilbert, Stephanie Figgins, Mrs Wendy Welsh and all staff for their wonderful organisation on the day. Once again, Mrs Johnson and Mr Blackmore ensured that our musicians once again did a fantastic job.

Thank you to our Senior Leaders who were actively involved in the Mass through Gospel readings and Prayers of Intercession. To our altar servers, musicians, thank you. Congratulations to the whole student community for their positive involvement in the Mass.

Next week, we will gather for our Ash Wednesday Liturgy and the Launch of Project Compassion.

God Bless Jim Dempsey College Principal

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MESSAGE

Compulsory School Attendance - Information for Parents

All children from six years of age and under the minimum school leaving age of 17 years are legally required to attend school. All New South Wales students must complete Year 10. After Year 10 and until they turn 17 years of age students must be in a school or registered for home schooling, or full-time in

− further education and training (e.g. TAFE, traineeship, apprenticeship); − full-time, paid employment of an average 25 hours per week; or − a combination of both of the above.

Did you know, that if a student misses as little as eight days in a school term, by the end of primary school they will have missed over a year of education?

Must I send my child every day? YES. Children are expected to attend all school activities, on time. Regular attendance

− helps your child develop the skills needed to access the world of work and other opportunities

− helps your child to learn the importance of punctuality and routine − ensures your child can make and keep friendships.

What if my child has to stay away from school? If your child has to be absent from school, you must tell the school and provide a reason for your child’s absence. To explain an absence parents and carers may

− send a note, fax or email to the school, or − telephone the school, or − visit the school.

A small number of absences may be accepted by the principal. For example, if your child has to − go to a special religious ceremony − is required to attend to a serious and/or urgent family situation (e.g. a funeral) − is too sick to go to school or has an infectious illness.

Absences of 10 days or more If a student is to be away for a period of 10 days or more (e.g. surgery, holiday, student exchange) parents must complete an ”Application for Exemption from Attendance at School” form which is available from the school. The Principal will consider your application and decide whether to grant a ‘Certificate of Exemption from Attendance at School’. Principals can grant exemptions from school attendance for 100 days or less in a 12 month period. However if the request for absence from school is over 101 days the application must go through the Catholic Schools Office to the Minister. Parents intending to seek an exemption must give the Principal at least a full term’s notice of the request.

What are school Principals responsible for? Principals help to ensure the safety, welfare and wellbeing of your child. Principals have to keep accurate records of student attendance and the reasons for any absences. Principals are responsible for accepting or not accepting a parent’s explanations for their child’s absences. Principals can request medical certificates or other documentation for long or frequent absences even where they are explained by parents as being due to illness. When absences are unexplained by parents, or the explanations are not accepted by the principal, schools work together with parents to help address the issue. The main aim is to sort out what is preventing the child from getting to school and putting strategies in place to help. Sometimes, the school will ask regional support staff and other agencies to assist.

YEAR 8 - 12 PARENT-TEACHER NIGHT

Year 8-12 Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held over two nights, both from 4.00pm – 7.30pm on: • Monday, 10th March surnames A-L only • Monday, 24th March for surnames M-Z only

If you are unavailable on your set date please book on the alternate date

All parents are encouraged to attend these interviews as they are a critical contributor to your child’s success and happiness at school.

The evening provides the opportunity to meet with your child’s Pastoral Care (PC) Teacher as well as all subject teachers. It will also give you the opportunity to give teachers a brief insight into your child and their learning. Teachers will use the opportunity to let you know how your child has settled in to the 2014 school year and show you ways your child will be learning in their classroom, including how you can check their work and assist with homework and assignments.

In order to book your interviews (5 minutes per teacher) please go to the College website www.pmreglism.catholic.edu.au and click on the Parent-Teacher interviews link.

Bookings will close 9.00am on interview day.

You will need to have a copy of your child’s timetable (in their diary) with subjects and teachers names for each subject. Enter the School Event Code from the box below and then follow steps 1, 2 and 3. Please BE CAREFUL to book interviews for the correct date.

Parents that do not have access to the internet at home, at work, at a friend’s house or on their phones, may send a note to school with the approximate times they require, or phone the College on 02) 5525 4100.
