Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners, When a Catholic is buried, the priest ends the pray-ers at the grave using the dialogue here below. I put the words here because many people don’t know what they are supposed to say when the burial rites are going on. Here are the words:

Priest: Eternal rest, grant unto him/her O Lord. People: And let perpetual light shine upon him/her.

Priest: May she/he rest in peace. People: Amen.

Priest: May his/her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. People: Amen. Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

Now that the time is right, we are excited to share the plan and continue moving forward!

The presentations will be held in the school gym using the new projector system. Hope to see you all there.

Inner calm is our intercom with God

From the Archives

Fr. Benedict Moellers, OFM, gave a Parish Mission 78 years ago. Here is the back of the holy card given to the parishioners. Thanks Judy Barbee for this find!

Remember Our Dead

Nearby the St. Joseph statue at St. Joe Church, we have placed the Book of Remembrance and a floral arrangement. Please feel free to write the names of your loved ones in the book there and they will be remembered in our Masses during November, which is All Souls Month.

You will also see the banner listing all our members who have gone to their reward since last Nov- ember 1st. Please keep them in your prayers.

To be Catholic is to be connected -- even to those who have gone before us. The dead are not forgot-ten. Their graves are signs of hope. They remain with us.

St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

My Dear Parishioner,

The message of this weekend’s Gospel reading is so familiar to us that I think we might miss it. We’ve heard “Love God and love your neighbor” so many times, but have we put it on our hearts? It would be good if we would imitate our Jewish friends and pray this prayer each morning and evening: The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. After these words, Moses added: “And these words that I command you today shall be in your heart. And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall speak them when you sit at home, and when you walk along the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up”. How strong these words are. A basis for life.

In the Gospel, Jesus adds, “and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” God has always loved all people in the world. So, if you are close to God, your love must spill over to other people.

I often wonder how much I really love God. My criterion is: how much I love the person I love the least, is how much I love God. How much do you love God? Think about it.

Know Someone Who’s Homebound?

Fr. Mike spends the first Friday of every month doing visits to the homebound members of our parishes. If you know someone who is homebound, in a nursing home or an assisted living community, please let the office know, St. Joseph - 317-398-8227 or St. Vincent -317-398-4028 so that Father can visit everyone who needs a visit. Often people assume we know about their loved ones who are homebound, but we do not.

Foundations!

“Therefore, [Jesus] is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:25). Dear Friends,

This coming week we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints (November 1st) and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (November 2nd).

Each time we proclaim the Creed we declare we believe in the communion of saints. This is the time of year we specifically and intentionally call to mind our family and friends who have passed from this life to the next life and call to mind those who have served as examples of strong faith for us. Our faith and faith Traditions are built upon their shoulders!

Our connection—our communion—with the saints is a marvelous relationship to participate in and to ponder. The relationships thrive on prayer—our prayers for the saints (both upper case “S”aints and lower case “s”aints) and their prayers for us. Essen-tially, we intercede for each other as the Body of Christ.

Just as we ask the Blessed Virgin Mary or St. Joseph to pray for us, we can ask our deceased family mem-bers and friends to pray for us. While asking for their prayers and support, we pray for and support them. Think about that prayer energy! The Church on earth and the Church in Heaven are in constant interces-sion for each other! How marvelous is that!!

During this very special week, as individuals and as domestic churches, take time to sit down and write down the names of family members and friends who have passed on who influenced and influence your faith. Ponder how their faith strengthens your faith foundation. Make a little shrine for the list. Each day of this week at the shrine light a candle (or as many as you wish) and spend time praying for them—be in communion with them. By doing so, you will be building up your foundation of faith.

Blessings and Peace, Dn. Tom

St. Antony of the Desert by St. Athanasius

Here is a great piece of spiritual advice: if you are having trouble finding your way to heaven, follow the saints. Better yet, follow a saint that you love and can relate to. St. Antony of the Desert might be a tough choice though. According to his biography, he lived an astoundingly holy life that involved living alone in a desert cave, fasting, praying, and being tormented by demons. However, the history of the Church teaches us that his life of ascetic sacrifice marked the beginning of Christian monasticism. My favorite chapter occurs in the middle of the book when the devil himself knocks on St. Antony’s door. Tired and angry, he confesses unwillingly under the force of God that he is now powerless because the “desert is now filled with Christian monks.”

When we read the lives of saints, we learn two things: how great they were because of their faith and obedience to God, and how great we can be if we faithfully obey God. We all contribute to the Church by living out our unique gifts, and we become saints when we do this with heroic virtue. In a time where so few have the heroic virtue of the saints and hardly any have the zeal of St. Antony, we all can benefit from reading about his life, whether we feel called to follow his ways or not, because it is quite possible (*cough cough*) that some of us are called to monasticism!

We need the following hours filled:

Sun. at 2:00am & 4:00am Mon. at 8:00am Sat. at 2:00pm & 5:00pm

Can you take an hour? Call Jim at 317-850-5248.

A Loving Note from Fr. Mike: One day, we will knock on Heaven’s door and ask to spend eternity with Jesus. Pray God he won’t have reason to say, “Really? You didn’t even spend one hour a week with me while you were on earth.”

A Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, Eternal Priest, keep Thy priests within the shelter of Thy Sacred Heart, where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Thy Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with Thy Precious Blood. Keep pure and unworldly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood. Let Thy Holy Love surround them from the world's contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit, and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation here and their everlasting crown hereafter. Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us: obtain for us numerous and holy priests. Amen!
