The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15--
celebrates the infallible dogma of the Assumption promulgated by Pope Pius XII
which states that the Blessed Virgin Mary, by a singular participation in her Son’s
Resurrection, was taken body and soul into heavenly glory when the course of her
earthly life was completed. Mary, immaculately conceived and preserved from all
stain of original sin, is exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things so that she
might be more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death. The
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians, who body
and soul, will one day live forever in the eternity of heaven.
I have to admit not understanding this infallible definition for a long time. But, when I studied it and saw
its beautiful connection with God’s plan for Mary’s life, the work of salvation by her Son and through
exploring the scripture and Tradition of the Church which addresses this Truth, I came to understand and
appreciate its beauty, and indeed, this is now one of my favorite Marian feasts. Mary, full of grace, blessed
among women and all humanity, who carried Jesus as the fruit of her womb, participated fully in the
graces of her Son’s life. It is a complete participation which goes beyond the grave to the glory of heaven.
As she led us to her Son on earth, so she leads us to his resurrection, pointing the way to him and eternal
life. “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen!”
Masses for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation--

Thursday, August 15th, the Mass of the Day at 7:30 AM
Violence in El Paso and Dayton—the horrific shootings with mass casualties in El Paso, TX, and Dayton,
OH, are tragedies that seem to be occurring all too frequently. The wounded or deceased were innocent
victims of the perpetrators, who for malevolent purposes, tragically affected the lives of the victims and all
who loved them. The causes of such massacres can be many and it is important to understand why they
occur. These are examples of times that we stare evil in the face and feel its dark, cold enmity to life and to
God. The availability of certain types of weapons, the mental state of the perpetrators and the dark
ideologies they embrace have all been offered as a plethora of reasons why such tragedies occur. They are
part of the conversation, but this is a complex problem which needs to be traced to its core. Why is it that
people kill? Why is the taking of innocent life is so appealing? Why is it that people are used as pawns to
promulgate a manifesto of ideas that ring with injustice and hate? Violence against others, whether it be
through the instrumentation of guns, physical assault, calumny or revenge, to name a few examples, are
terrible symptoms of the core issue we have regarding how our society and the West understands the
human person in a highly subjective and narcissistic way. The human person is a “me,” rather than being
understood as created in the image and likeness of God. We are losing or have lost the sense of
community and the responsibility we have towards one another. Above all, society has and is attempting
to take God out of life and our civilization. Is it possible for us to address these deeper realities to help
curb the violence?
Let us pray for the victims of the shootings, their families and friends. Because we follow Jesus, our
prayers include the perpetrators as well. May our prayers be fervent as we ask God for the graces to
address violence in our society and the world. Let us be led by God to talk with one another, leaving the
partisan bickering behind, and work with God to restore what has been lost by humanity.
