Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,,

We continue to solicit your donations for our Grotto project behind the Parish Life Center. Please take note of the sketch in the main church, and sample brick inscriptions in our Memorial Brick Campaign. Please use one of the forms at the exits of the church to record your information and return it with payment to the rectory. I hope many of you will want to be part of this historic project to provide some beautiful and functional outdoor meditation space in honor of our Blessed Mother and some of the saints. This could make a meaningful Christmas gift in certain circumstances. I am happy to tell you that Fr. Dedert will be returning to St. John’s for his Christmas Break from his studies in Pamplona, Spain. He expects to arrive in the late afternoon of December 21st and return earlier in the day on January 10th. I remind you of our Advent Penance Service tomorrow evening at 7:30pm at St. Mary’s Church in Dumont. Priests from St. John’s, St. Mary’s, Ascension, and St. Joseph’s in Bogota will be available for confessions in English and in Spanish after the Service. See Page 2 for the full schedule of Advent Confessions and Christmas Masses. Our Filipino Community’s annual 9-day Simbang Gabi celebration begins this Tuesday, December 16th, at 5am in the Church, followed by a light breakfast in Conlon Hall Cafeteria, each day through December 24th, except next Saturday, December 20th, when the annual evening Mass will be celebrated instead of the Spanish Mass. This year, our Filipino Choir has prepared a Christmas Concert to precede the Saturday Mass, starting at 6:45pm. Please see the flyer in today’s bulletin with the entire week’s schedule. Principal celebrants are: Dec. 16—Msgr. Richard Arnhols; Dec. 17—Fr. Ernesto Tibay, Dec. 18—Fr. Jonathan Perez; Dec. 19—Fr. Timothy Graff (St. Joseph-Bogota); Dec. 20—Msgr. Richard Arnhols; Dec. 21—Fr. Gustavo Alfaro; Dec. 22nd—Fr. Raymond Filipski; Dec. 23rd, Fr. Dedert Duarte, assisted by Deacon Jim; Dec. 24th—Fr. Dedert Duarte.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

On this Sunday, traditionally known as Advent’s joyful Sunday, the scripture readings are filled with talk about rejoicing; indeed, in places they seem quite insistent that we rejoice. Paul tells the Thessalonians not only that they must rejoice, but also that they must “rejoice always” and give thanks in all circumstances. This seems like a tall order. After all, isn’t joy an emotion that is beyond anyone’s power to command? But perhaps the joy spoken about in the scriptures is not simply the emotion that arises unbidden in us, but rather a disposition that we cultivate deliberately by acknowledging God’s goodness in all the circumstances of our lives. The twentieth-century Catholic social activist Dorothy Day wrote that when we act lovingly we begin to feel loving. So certainly acting joyfully brings joy to others—this in turn makes us feel joyful. She believed we are called to the “duty of delight.” When we bring joy to others, even and perhaps especially when we do not feel particularly joyful ourselves, we are like a mirror that reflects God’s joy in Creation. Like John the Baptist, we are not the light, but bear witness to the light. Yet even as we bear witness to God’s joy, we come to share in it ourselves, caught up in what we reflect. “God of joy, fill our hearts. Let our lives reflect your light to the world to bring joy to those in darkness. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances;

for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I Thessalonians 5: 16-18

This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations.

Our Sunday Offering: Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014—$17,851.98 Nov. 17, 2013—$18,619.70

Thank you!

‘Tis the Season of Peace, Joy, and Celebration! Last Monday, December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Transfiguration held our Traditional Marian Day. While others take this day as a holiday, we devote it to the Blessed Mother, beginning with Mass and ending with the entire school gathering for the Rosary. Celebrating our Blessed Mother being born without original sin, and therefore the perfect individual to be the Mother of our Savior, is a great way to prepare for the coming of her son, on Christmas Day! May the Blessed Mother continue to help and protect us all from all harm, mental, physical and spiritual, now and throughout our lives.
