BECOMING OBEDIENT . . . The words of the prophet Isaiah ring out with great clarity about the suffering of God’s anointed One: “Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled” (Isaiah 50:4, 5). To “obey” means to listen and to heed. Jesus, the Suffering Servant of Isaiah, sets his face “like flint, knowing that [he] shall not be put to shame” (Isaiah 50:7b). Relying on God, attentive and obedient to what he has heard, he submits to the worst that human beings can endure.
