SPIRIT OF SHARING GIFT COLLECTION FOR LAWRENCE To be sure, we
will miss gathering with fellow St. John-St. Paul parishioners up
in Lawrence this year to help parents or caretakers select presents
for their children. Kindly consider selecting one or more gifts
from Spirit of Sharing's first-ever online registry for Lawrence's
severely at-risk infants, children and teens:
https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3682JKY7ABCIB?ref_=wl_share
Your gifts will be shipped directly to Rev. Paul O'Brien,
Pastor, St. Patrick Parish, who will deliver them personally to
chil-dren's homes by Christmas Eve. If you would prefer to donate
funds that Father Paul's staff would use to purchase gifts for
these children on your behalf, go to:
www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=TSH647QEESBXE According to
Fr. Paul, “In the best of times, life here in Lawrence is difficult
for many. Lawrence is consistently the economically poorest city in
MA, and residents deal daily with a galaxy of social issues. These
are not the best of times in Lawrence. At least 150 residents have
died from the coronavirus and more than 5,000 have been confirmed
positive. Since many people here work in front-line service jobs
and live in crowded housing, Lawrence is and remains deeply in the
COVID-19 red zone, with now over a 62.4 average daily incidence
rate per 100,000 residents [vs. 15.3/100k statewide]. Lawrence’s
unemployment rate hovers at about 33.1 % [vs. 9.6 % statewide], and
questions about possible shifts in the rental eviction ban have
left many families particularly on edge. I do believe all children
should receive Christmas gifts. Past Spirit of Sharing
contributions have transformed the experience of Christmas for
thousands of children here in Lawrence.”

CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME, LAUDATO SI`
The season of Advent is full of hope. Pope Francis states: “Hope
speaks to us of a thirst, an aspiration, a longing for a life of
fulfillment... Hope is bold; it can look beyond per-sonal
convenience, the petty securities and compensations which limit our
horizon, and it can open us up to grand ideals that can make life
more beautiful and worthwhile.” (Fratelli Tutti, #55)
In this time where news about the environment and climate change
is not always the most hopeful, we want-ed to bring to you a
message of hope: Good news!! Converse, the sneaker company, is
spanning the globe to create eco-friendly murals in large cities.
They call these cityscapes “City Forests.” The paint used on these
murals is photocatalytic. What on earth is that?! It’s a
technology that uses light energy to break down air pollutants
and convert them into harmless substances. In other words, these
paintings have the same impact on cleaning our air as do our
forests. Currently, these City Forests represent the air-cleaning
power of 4,894 trees! So this week, take a moment to give thanks to
God for all of those creative people throughout our planet who are
giving us hope as they nurture and protect our common home. After
all, we are a people of hope and we carry this hope in our hearts
wherever we go.
In today's Gospel John the Baptist urges us to "Prepare the way
of the Lord." We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by
making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts,
in our family, and to reach out to those in need. Is there a family
you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor
to celebrate Christmas.
The St. John-St. Paul Conference of the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul is available to help those in our community in need of
emergency assistance, especially during this current crisis. If you
or someone you know needs help with food, rent or mortgage
assistance, or help with a utility bill, please reach out to us.
All information received is kept completely confidential. Please
stay safe and healthy, and may God bless you!
