19th Sunday in Ordinary Time Readings: 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-13a, Rom 9: 1-5;

Mt. 14:22-33

Theme: Prayer in Days of Affliction. Hu-man life is a remarkable mixture of that fa-mous “smile and a tear.” We all have our ups and downs in life. We attend both wed-dings and funerals. Parents witness gradua-tions and sometimes the failures of their chil-dren as well. Married life can be like the smell of roses and turn into a nightmare. Young people are successful today and can be turned down tomorrow. Friends may dis-appoint us and we may witness infidelity not only in our government but even in our Church. All this may leave us confused and downcast. What are we to do? Are we to give up our faith in God? Queen Jezebel threatened the life of Elijah. He went to a cave in search of God; he prayed and encountered God in “a tiny whis-pering sound,” as the beautiful, idyllic tradi-tion of the first reading of this weekend has it. Jesus’ best friend, John the Baptist, was beheaded in jail and “Jesus went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When it was evening He was there alone.” That night, Jesus’ disciples were in serious trouble, their boat being tossed about in the waves. Lack of faith made them desperate and perhaps Peter, becoming frightened, would have drowned if he had not cried out: “Lord, save me!” God’s word to everyone tossed about on the waves of life is: Find a quiet moment for yourself, search for God, pray with faith: “Lord, save me!”

Vocation Viewpoint: Do not be afraid; have faith and trust the Lord’s call. Consider be-ing a priest or religious brother or sister. (Matthew 14: 22-23)

Why do Catholics ***believe Mary was assumed into Heaven? The idea that a person may be bodily assumed into Heaven is from Scripture. Enoch, Elijah, and those who came out of the tomb at the death of Jesus were all assumed into Heaven (Matthew 27:52-53). Christians believe that one day we will all be raised (1 Thes 4:17). Mary played a significant part in Jesus’ saving work and it makes sense that she would attain its full fruit. She received early the blessing we will all share.

***light votive prayer candles in church? A person can only pray for so long. Lighting a candle serves to pro-long that prayer beyond our presence in the church. The candle remains behind and symbolizes the desire for the prayer to continue. So when we light candles in prayer, our intentions remain present even when we are gone. Next time you pass a can-dle rack help prolong others’ prayers by offering one for the intentions of the people who lit them.

***priests wear different colored vestments throughout the year? The colors of the vestments help bring to mind the sacred mysteries we celebrate throughout the liturgical year. Each color highlights a particular aspect of the season or a specific mystery of the faith. For example, white and gold symbolize rejoicing and purity of soul. They are worn during Christmas and Easter seasons. Red calls to mind Christ’s blood and is worn on Good Friday and to commemorate those saints who were martyred for our faith. Red also signifies the burning fire of God’s love. Thus red vestments are worn on Pentecost. Purple symbolizes repentance and atonement and so are worn during the seasons of Advent and Lent. Some advo-cate wearing blue vestments during Advent to differentiate from the season of Lent; so far this has not been formally accepted by the Church. Finally, green symbolizes fresh-ness and hope and so green vestments are worn during Ordinary Time.

***call our priests “Father?” In the early Church, those who gave special witness to the faith were called “Father.” In fact, St. Paul said, “For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.” (1 Cor 4:15-16.) The practice of addressing priests this way was brought to the U.S. in the 19th century by Irish immigrants who called their priests “Father.” Today this title reminds us that we are all united as family under Christ, His Gospel, His Church, and His representatives on earth.

***baptize babies? “Truly I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5). Baptism is the gateway to life in the Spirit, the Church, and the other sacraments. So it makes sense that it be conveyed as early as possible. While a child obviously can’t consciously choose Bap-tism, his/her parents can choose for them. In so doing they accept for him/her the priceless gift of becoming a child of God.

Choose Life: The argument that the government should not be involved in such a personal decision as abortion is fatally flawed. The government got “too involved” in abor-tion when it claimed (through the Supreme Court) to have the authority to deprive some human beings of their right to life. Also, when someone’s “choice” destroys someone else’s life, that choice is no longer merely a personal, pri-vate matter. -(Fr. Frank Pavone)

Knights of Columbus Celebrate Family Week….

Summer is a time for family activities and the Knights

of Columbus as a family organization is hosting a

potluck family picnic during Knights of Columbus

Family Week August 10-17. Campion Council 1840

of Prairie du Chien will host a picnic with games and

prizes for the kids on Tuesday, August 12th, 2008.

The picnic will be held on St. Feriole Island at a shel-

ter from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Bring a dish to pass and

enjoy the company. At 6:30 pm there will be kids

games and prizes. All are invited to this picnic, not

just K of C members. Watch for signs on the island to

direct you to the shelter.

St. John’s Fall Bazaar will be here before we know it. This year the Bazaar is on Sunday, Sep-tember 21st. Upcoming planning meetings will be held on August 11th, August 25th and Sep-

tember 15th. All Unit Chairpeople should try to attend these meetings as well as anyone else with new ideas or suggestions or anyone who would like to volunteer to help.

To Parishioners of both Parishes…….

Any members of St.. Gabriel’s & St. John’s Par-

ishes, male or female (couples would be great), inter-

ested in being involved on a committee that assesses

the needs of our parishes in family matters, spiritual

growth, welcoming new parishioners, programs for

the elderly and youth please consider joining the

Family Life Committee. There are so many areas to

touch in a positive way, however, the current com-

mittee needs your involvement to successfully put

plans into action. We cannot do all of the above but

choose programs that are available and fit in to make

a difference where the need exists. It is rewarding

and an opportunity for spiritual growth as a commit-

tee, as we pray, work, play, support in friendship,

and grow together as a group. Plan on attending the

next meeting on the third Wednesday in August to

check it out. Meetings are just once a month on the

3rd Wednesday at 7:00 pm in St. John’s Church Hall.

No meetings are held in June and July. If the 3rd

Wednesday is bad for you, please check it out any-

way as meeting night could be negotiable

Kindergarten through 5th grade are get-

ting a new reading series. It will cost an aver-

age of $130.00 per student for this program. If you

would like to contribute to the “Reading Series

Fund,” please mark an envelope with your contribu-

tion inside and put it in the Sunday collection. Thank

you for your support of Prairie Catholic.
