A world united in love?
Parents who have several children will often remark at how different their children can be from one another. Within the same family there can be such a variety of personalities and preferences. Perhaps that fact could serve as a microcosm of the human family. Diversity seems to be part of the human condition. We are male or female; black, white, Hispanic, Asian, or “other”; Republican, Democrat, or “independent”; Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, or any one of several other religious traditions; rich, poor, or middle class. We might come from this or that country, or, as is so often the case with Americans, even a single person may be a blend of several nationalities or ethnic backgrounds.
Sometimes all this diversity is celebrated as a marvelous gift and a great blessing. We can learn from those who are different from us. Our perspective of the world and our understanding of daily living can be broadened when we come to know how other people deal with the challenges of life. It is even possible to appreciate life more when we see it through the eyes and experience of someone who comes from a different background. Diversity can enrich us.
Unfortunately, our differences can also become a source of division and conflict within and among the human family. An all too common weakness among us human beings is that we can easily fall into distrusting others who think or act differently than we do. We can become suspicious, judgmental, and at times, threatened by those who espouse a way of life that is at odds with our own. We can be tempted to look down on those who we perceive as strange or unfamiliar. Worse still, the diversity in the human family can lead to groups of people being set against one another. We need only to look at the daily headlines about politics, religious issues, or international relations to see how our differences cause stress and conflict, how they keep us apart, and inhibit the Christian ideal of love of neighbor.
Given all this, is it even possible to imagine a world free of all acrimony, dissension, and distrust of one another? Is it possible for the whole human family to be at peace with one another, united in love rather than divided by whatever makes us “different” from each other? The message of today’s feast of Pentecost offers a resounding YES to this question. God sends his Spirit to break down the walls of sin and division. Regardless of how far we may be from one another, the message of Jesus’ Resurrection and the power of his Spirit, who came to the Apostles on the first Pentecost, is a message of unity, healing, and hope. Today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles speaks of a crowd of over a dozen different nationalities being together in Jerusalem on the first Pentecost. When the Holy Spirit came, they were “astounded” because each person was able to hear the message of the Apostles in his or her “own language.”
One of the expressions we use to describe a person who thinks or believes differently than we do is to say that he or she is speaking a “different language.” In a news report this past week, the mayor of New York City mentioned that there are over 200 languages spoken in the city. But language is more than just speech. Our “language” can refer to the way we deal with life spiritually, politically, and personally. Pentecost tells us that because God’s love “speaks” to every human heart, we can always find common ground with one another. In today’s Gospel, when Jesus says, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” followed by “whose sins you forgive are forgiven them…,” he is teaching us that the work of the Spirit is to reconcile, to heal, and to unite the human family in love. In addition to the forgiveness of sin, perhaps we must also have a forgiving attitude about that which makes us different from one another or those things that divide us. How might the Holy Spirit be prompting me to be more patient and forgiving, or to take a risk to love where I haven’t loved before, or to accept someone who is very different than I? The Spirit of Pentecost stands for the love that can break down all kinds of walls and barriers. It’s a spirit that can touch our hearts. Its effect can bring unity and peace to our families, to our Church, and to our hungry world.

A Message from Sister Lisa
Each week we continue to welcome new families needing assistance. Some of these have received help from us in the past, then stabilized their circumstances, then find themselves struggling again. Once such family, headed by “Mimi,” returned in March because her husband had decided to leave her and their two adult sons. She could no longer afford the rent, even though she is working 65 hours a week at her two jobs. “Mimi” was in panic mode; she was desperate for a new apartment and a way to meet all her family’s expenses. We were able to help her identify appropriate housing, and to persuade her to have her sons contribute their fair share of the household expenses. We were also able to provide the security deposit on her new place. “Mimi” came in this past week for a check-in; she and her sons are managing well, meeting all expenses and even paying down the credit card debt. The sons are happy to be of support to the household, and have increased their hours of working. Because of your compassionate generosity we could help this family, in a relatively short time, achieve stability. We are grateful for the ways you live the Gospel mandate of Love. As we continue our journey to the end of this Easter season, may we be come even more a source of God’s transformative love for our needy and broken world. Know that you are blessing, for which I give God glad thanks.

Last Wednesday, May 16th, was the Feast day of St. John Nepomucene. John was born Jan Wolflin in the little village of Nepomuk, Bohemia, (in present Czechoslovakia ) in 1330, and in spite of poverty, his parents succeeded in providing him with the good education that his talents deserved. He pursued his studies with great distinction at Prague and became a doctor of theology and canon law before he was ordained. His preaching soon won him renown among university students and others, and his charity endeared him to the poor. He was appointed a canon of the cathedral, and finally vicar general.
A fearless holiness was certainly John’s chief quality, for he had the courage to defend the rights of the Church against Wenceslaus, who was an extraordinarily brutal and irresponsible king. This debauched monarch, (his subjects called him “the drunkard”) had originally invited John to the royal court, having heard of his praises, to give a series of Lenten sermons. It seems that the powerful preaching of the saint frightened the king into a brief period of decent living, which ended when the king became angered at John. One tradition holds that John was the queen’s confessor and that the king, who doubted his wife’s (Queen Sophie) fidelity, unsuccessfully tried to make the saint reveal the contents of her confessions (thus the image of St. John holding his fingers against his mouth in the symbol of “Shhhhh”). Other sources say that the trouble began when John and the archbishop of Prague frustrated an attempt by the king to rob a monastery of it’s lands and revenue. Wenceslaus, at any rate, became enraged at the saint, with his troublesome goodness, and resolved to do away with him. One night Wenceslaus had his soldiers bring John to the royal palace, where the king tried to torture him into compliance with his own plans. When such procedures as holding burning torches to John’s sides filed to weaken his resolve, the king had the saint bound, gagged, and thrown from a bridge into the Moldau River. Although the dark of night hid the crime, legend has it that a cluster of lights resembling seven flames or stars hovered above the water where his body was dumped, and in the morning the body was found washed up on the banks of the river. This occurred in 1393. John’s body quickly became an object of veneration for the people of Prague and is still preserved in the cathedral there. John Nepomucene came to be widely regarded as martyr for the faith, and in the course of time was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1729, with May 16th chosen as his feast day. Traditionally, St. John has been revered as the “Patron saint of the seal of the confessional.” Although he was said to have refused to divulge the contents of Queen’ Sophie’s confession to Wencesalus, there is no evidence to support this story. The dubious character of the “confession story” was recognized by the Vatican in 1961, when the Sacred Congregation of Rites removed Nepomuk’s feast day from the calendar of the Universal Church. On the 250th anniversary of his canonization in 1979, Pope John Paul II saluted St. John Nepomucene as a “champion of human rights, especially of religious liberty.” The Holy Father went on to mention that, “The great figure of St. John holds an example for us all.” St. John’s symbol in art is a cluster of seven stars against the backdrop of a bridge. He is the patron saint of Bohemia, of bridges and bridge builders, and for help in making a good confession.

Ac�on Alert: Support the New Mother Cabrini Health Founda�on
Last week Cardinal Timothy Dolan and the Catholic Diocesan Bishops of New York State announced the forma�on of the Mother Cabrini Health Founda�on, which will be one of the largest in the United States, and the largest focused solely on improving the health and well-being of poor and underserved New Yorkers across all parts of the state. The founda�on will result from the sale of assets from Fidelis Care (a Catholic-sponsored non-profit health insurer) to Centene Corpora�on. So far, the transac�on has been approved by the New York Department of Health and the New York Depart-ment of Financial Services. Our last step on the way to approval is the office of the New York A�orney General. Can you take a minute to send a le�er of support to the A�orney General's office, so the Mother Cabrini Health Founda�on can get started provid-ing up to $150 million annually in grants to serve New Yorkers in need? July 9 for opening mass, and they will depart Friday morning with a send off mass.

That time of year has come when we reach out to our volunteers to ensure that they are interested in continuing their important ministries with us.
Letters and phone calls will be going out to those volunteers for whom we are missing some of the documentation for the “Safe Environment” information that the Diocese of Rockville Centre mandates. The VIRTUS Program (the approved Child Protection Program), the background check information, and the signing the Code of Conduct are all necessary to help keep our children and parish safe. If you receive a notice, please try and get the information to us as quickly as possible. You may submit any paperwork in person or via mail to the Parish Office, and/or please sign up for a VIRTUS class as soon as possible.
NOTE: Some paperwork has come back without all signatures and/or information filled out, ie: social security number. This information is the most helpful for conducting a background check. It is difficult to complete the Diocesan requirements without your social security number, but there are alternatives To discuss these alternatives, please contact Father Joe or Donna Bellucci at the office at 631-589-0540.
At this time, St. John Nepomucene is completing the training for new Facilitators of the VIRTUS program and as such, no sessions are scheduled here right now. If you need a VIRTUS session, there are several available at locations near St. John’s. Three of the several that are available: ST. SYLVESTER’S, 68 OHIO AV, MEDFORD: THURSDAY, MAY 31, 7:00 PM. ST, ELIZABETH, 181 WOLF HILL RD, MELVILLE: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 at 7:00 PM. ST. Today is Pentecost. Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. The Jews celebrated this day fifty days after the Passover. Today we celebrate how Jesus sent his Holy Spirit to the disciples, just as he had promised. Imagine how the disciples must have felt sitting quietly together in a room when Jesus appeared to them? The Spirit changed the disciples by allowing them to understand others even if they did not speak the same language. He filled them with courage and power that they could stand up before the crowds and preach and work miracles in God’s name. The Spirit brought seven gifts to the disciples: joy, love, patience, kindness, understanding, reverence (respect), and courage. These gifts helped the disciples and us go out and spread the message of Jesus. The gifts of the Spirit help us to follow the right path on our journey through life towards heaven, and they fill us with God’s goodness. Through our Baptism and then we are refreshed at our Confirmation we receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Questions: 1. How did the Spirit change the

when Jesus appeared? 3. What gifts did the Spirit give
to the disciples and us? 4. What 2 Sacraments do we
receive the Spirit?

provide all necessary materials. One requirement is to take the
VIRTUS course which is the Diocese Child Abuse Prevention Workshop.
We will direct you on how to do that. (See page 12)
Please let us know if you are interested in teaching a class this year. The more catechists we have early on, the easier it is to set up
classes. You are more than welcome to teach your own child’s class.
We also always need desk helpers during class time.
Teenagers who have received Confirmation are welcome to become
catechists with a partner. We will train them and provide all materials. They will also be
given Community Service for their prep time and teaching time.
