REFLECT Grace and sin, belief and unbelief, good and evil all exist together. While we wrestle with these two dimensions of reality inwardly, they are also witnessed in the actions and words of others. Many, all too often, beat themselves up because of their sin. We are also all too quick to pass judgment on others whom we perceive to be in error and walking down a wrong path. God does not make rash judgments, nor should we. Patience is the order of the day as is an understanding that God is ultimately the caller of the shots.

Our faith tells us that while God allows the wheat and the weeds to coexist, the wheat will always triumph. As long as we can cultivate even a little faith and a small measure of desire for God, He can produce abundant blessings and good things. Even when the weeds seem to have triumphed, there still may be a small measure of faith remaining that can be cultivated and grown. It doesn’t take much! Unless a person totally allows the weeds to reign, there is always to be found at least a small measure of faith, good, light, and love. With even this small portion, God can produce abundant growth.

Admittedly, it is easy to give into the weeds, and they grow very quickly. Any gardener knows this to be true. Sometimes, the weeds even seem more attractive and vibrant. Dealing with weeds can quickly become a losing battle, and they can look healthier and grow faster than the very plants we are trying to protect. It’s easy to give into them and let them win. While God will deal with all things in due time, we are responsible for keeping things in check in the short term. It is our task to keep our eyes fixed on God’s presence and mercy. We are asked to avoid judgment. And, it is not our responsibility to deal with the weeds in someone else’s garden, only our own. One garden is enough responsibility for anyone.

Weeds have power. We have to realize this. While they can appear attractive and healthy, they can quickly choke us off from God’s presence. Our task is one of maintenance and cultivating a desire for God. Even the smallest kernel of faith can grow into something wonderful. In God’s time, the eternal harvest will come, and we will no longer have to worry about the weeds.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION Religious Education Registration for the School Year 2020-21 is still underway. We are asking all students that plan to attend our program in the Fall to please register. We are making decisions on class size due to the directives from the State of Connecticut and the Archdiocese of Hartford. It is important to know how many students will be in each class, as there will be a cap imposed due to these directives.

Please contact the Religious Education Office at 860-973-1717 ext. 118 to register your students. If you have any questions please call Pat Keck, Coordinator of Religious Education, ext. 117.

FROM FR. GOLAS Since the merger of the two churches into St. Jeanne Jugan Parish in June 2017, I have tried as much as possible to maintain and develop the existing parish schedule, programs, and organizations. In some cases, no changes were made. In other cases, efforts and programs were combined or changed to strengthen their viability. With respect to the weekend Mass schedule, there were no changes made. I have received comments since about the limitations of our present schedule. In addition, the Archdiocese is planning more consolidation of parishes with fewer priests responsible for more parishes or churches. I have not heard of any plan for Enfield yet, but this process is underway in other parts of our diocese. I have a major concern as Pastor that our present Mass schedule could not be handled by one priest if something unexpected happens. I have consulted the Parish Council this past year and after a study by Deacon Vince Motto and Claire Bronson, a parish Trustee which recommended this new schedule, the Parish Council accepted and approved a new Mass schedule. Due to the restrictions of the pandemic, there was no opportunity to have a more broadly based discussion of it. We are planning to implement this schedule in September 2020 to coincide with the opening of the Mass book for intentions at that time.

The new Mass schedule will be in effect beginning Labor Day weekend, September 5th/6th.

The new Mass Schedule is as follows:

Confessions will be on Saturdays at 3 pm at Holy Family Church and at 4 pm at St. Bernard Church. If only one priest is available that weekend, these times will have to be to adjusted.

I hope that you understand the reason for these changes. I am trying to serve the best interest of our parish of St. Jeanne Jugan. I appreciate the support you all show for our parish, for Fr. Mathew and myself, and for each other. You are what makes St. Jeanne Jugan Parish a wonderful and faithful parish.

Finally, with the reopening of the Churches for Sunday Masses and the new guidelines and directives, I want to express my appreciation for the cooperation of those attending. Everyone is following the new guidelines of registering to keep the proper limit of 100, using hand sanitizer, observing the six foot distance from others, following the floor markings, and wearing masks to help keep us all safe. As I understand it, the proper way to wear the mask effectively is to have the mask cover both your nose and mouth. This is a different time for all of us and we are trying to do the best we can to promote procedures for everyone’s health. Thank you for helping us keep everyone healthy and safe so we can continue to celebrate Mass together in our churches.

MARRIAGE Sometimes marriages need a little massage and not a full override. The Office of Family Life is happy to offer marriage enrichment

programs that do just that—massage your working marriage. The Office of Family Life offers a Marriage Enrichment retreat, Marriage

Encounter, and Retrouvaille retreat.

• The Marriage Enrichment retreat is a one-day retreat for married couples. During this one-day retreat, married couples will be

given ideas on how to edify their marriage using Dr. Gottman’s, “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.”

• Marriage Encounter is a weekend retreat freeing married couples from distractions so they focus on their marriage. Marriage

Encounter is considered the first marriage enrichment program offered to married couples originally presented in Barcelona by Fr.

Gabriel Calvo in 1962. The decades of trial and error has made Marriage Encounter the premiere Catholic couples retreat worldwide.

• Retrouvaille is for couples considering separation, separated, or divorced wanting to repair their marriage by reviving their

relationship. Retrouvaille is a three-phase program with each phase offering opportunities to heal your marriage.

To learn more about any of these marriage enrichment programs, contact 860-242-5573 or [email protected].

severely restricted. In March around the Feast of St. Joseph,

the Archbishop awards an Archdiocesan Medal of

Appreciation to parishioners who generously volunteer

their time in service to their parish and community. The 2020 medal recipient from St. Jeanne Jugan Parish is

Mrs. Andrea Krajewski who has been involved in the altar

decorations, care of the sacristy and the vestments, is

a member of the choir of St. Bernard Church, and has helped out at the carnival.

She kept the French fry booth supplied!

Andrea will receive the medal at the 10:30 am Mass on

Sunday, July 26th at St Bernard Church.

Congratulations to Andrea, her husband Rich and her family. St. Jeanne Jugan

Parish appreciates you and everything you do!

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION Although public Masses have resumed, some are unable to attend or feel uneasy about attending. Archbishop Leonard P. Blair has granted a dispensation from the Sunday obligation to all Catholics of the Archdiocese of Hartford through September 6th. Those who are not attending Sunday Mass are not able to physically receive Holy Eucharist but may receive by an Act of Spiritual Communion.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the

Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I

cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace

you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be

separated from you. Amen.

REOPENING OF CHURCHES FOR WEEKEND MASSES IN

THE ARCHDIOCESE OF HARTFORD As of Saturday, July 4, 2020, parishes were able to reopen for the public celebration

of weekend Masses, provided that no more than a total of 100 socially distanced

persons are present at a given Mass in keeping with the limitation currently set by

the State of Connecticut. All previously set requirements for weekday Masses will

still be observed during weekend Masses. This includes the wearing of masks while in church and the limitation on singing, which may be done by a cantor but will not

include participation by the congregation.

In an effort to maintain no more than 100 people at each Mass, you will need to call the rectory during office hours to register for Mass.

Holy Family Church office hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm

and St. Bernard Church office hours are Monday through Thursday from

9 am to 3 pm and Fridays from 9 am to noon.

The dispensation from the Sunday obligation granted to all Catholics of the

Archdiocese of Hartford by Archbishop Leonard P. Blair has been extended through Sunday, September 6. The elderly, the sick, those who care for someone who is

vulnerable, or those who are fearful or anxious are encouraged not to attend or feel obligated to attend at this time.

Live-streamed Masses, both daily and weekend, will continue on our website (sjjenfield.org) so that those who cannot attend will be able to participate and remain

connected with the parish.

If you decide to attend Mass, please be charitable by protecting others and yourself. Please read and follow the guidelines below.

• If you or someone in your household is ill, especially with fever or flu-like

symptoms or conjunctivitis, please do not enter the church.

• At all times, including entering and exiting the church, practice social distancing

by staying at least 6 feet from people who do not live in your household.

• You must wear a face mask or cloth face covering. The proper way to wear the mask effectively is to have the mask cover both your nose and mouth.

• Do not shake hands with others.

• Use hand sanitizers.

• Do not congregate to socialize before or after Mass.

AS WE WELCOME YOU BACK AND RESUME PUBLIC LITURGIES TOGETHER, PLEASE TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO STAY SAFE.

MISSION COOPERATIVE APPEAL

(July 18th and 19th)

This weekend we are collecting monetary donations for the

benefit of the Maranatha Caring Mission in Nigeria through the

annual Mission Cooperative Appeal Collection. The missionaries

are unable to join us in person because of the coronavirus

pandemic; nonetheless, we seek to assist them with our prayer

and financial support toward the provision of cataract surgery

for people who do not have the resources to obtain that medical

care; Maranatha offers the hope of restoring their sight.

We ask your generous response, especially in these difficult

times. Like the parables of the mustard seed and the yeast in

this week’s gospel, our compassionate sharing furthers the

Reign of God.

Checks may be made out to The Catholic Mission Aid Office.

Please place your donations in the Offertory Collection boxes

which can be found in each church.

On behalf of the Maranatha Caring Mission, thank you in

advance for your caring and generous donations and prayers.
