Yet if we could actually test all the crosses we think are lighter than ours, we would never find one better suited for us than our own. J. R. Miller From the Pastor LIFELONG LEARNERS "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey every- thing that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." - Matthew 28:19-20 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ in the power of the life-giving Holy Spirit. The closing words of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew, known as the Great Commission, are his powerful parting words to his disciples. We are to be a com- munity of faith through baptism. We are named, claimed and commissioned in the name of the Triune God for the purpose of growing this community of followers of Jesus Christ. We are, first and foremost, as disciples, lifelong learners gathered together in the presence of Jesus Christ. We are students of Jesus. Jesus is our teacher. Together we learn from Jesus and help teach one another in this com- munity of faith. Why does Jesus emphasize teaching the faith in the Great Commission? If we are to believe in Jesus, trust him with our lives, claim his promise of new and eternal life in his kingdom, and live our lives grounded in him and the values of his kingdom, then it stands to reason that we must sit at the feet of the master and come to know him. We come to know Jesus, his words and deeds, through the study of God's Word, especially the Gospels. We are formed as disciples of Je- sus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit as we engage God's Word. I invite and encourage you to avail yourselves of the opportunities to hear and study God's Word through worship and the educational ministries of the con- gregation. Hear and study at home as individuals. Hear and study at Saint Jacob in community. Individual study at home and corporate study in community go to- gether. The good people of your parish education team are working hard to cre- ate opportunities for learning the faith and growing as disciples of Jesus Christ. These opportunities for learning and growing will cover all ages. You are invited to have your life changed by Jesus. I know there are many wonderful things that you can be doing with your time. I know your salvation does not depend on your perfect attendance in Sun- day school. I know cultural trends tell us that Christian education is not important to the majority of Christians. But I also know that as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ we are not lemmings of a marginal faith. We know we are called to be life- long learners as his followers. We are called to be formed in the faith for the pur- pose of growing the community of Christ where others are formed as disciples. We, who have been saved by grace through faith in Christ on the cross, have been set free to joyfully gather in community in the presence of Christ to learn, to love, to grow, to share. The Lord bless you and keep you and lead you to life everlasting. Yours in Christ, Pastor David Eidson

Mission Interpreter News “There are no young people here” is a com-

mon refrain as some worry about the future of the church. But young adults are indeed active across the ELCA and have powerful faith stories to share. College students are preparing to enter a society that has growing religious diversity and a rising number of attacks on places of worship moti-vated by religious hate. The duality of this context can make for a daunting entry into a religiously and culturally pluralistic world, and it’s one ELCA colleges and universities hope to help students navigate. Leaders at ELCA-affiliated schools believe graduates should have some interreligious knowledge and experience. This work is needed because the world desperately longs for more people who can cultivate hope instead of hate, reconciliation instead of division, and cooperation instead of conflict.

Half of the ELCA’s 26 colleges and universities are connected with the Interreligious Coordinating Committee. Interreligious engage-ment on these campuses ranges widely in academic and cocurricular settings. Capital University in Columbus, Ohio has created opportuni-ties for interreligious understanding for students outside of the class-room. Capital have opened dedicated spaces for interfaith prayer and meditation. “If we’re going to be committed to an interfaith experience, we must provide these spaces so these students can fully live their tradi-tion,” said Drew Tucker, campus pastor of Capital. Students who par-ticipate in the interreligious programs say they experience benefits in both their education and personal growth. Student say interreligious programming also makes them feel more equipped to interact and build relationships in a pluralistic world. Andrew Thompson, another recent Capital graduate, agreed: “Through interfaith partnerships, celebrations and dialogue together, I have been able to build deep relationships with folks from variety of religions traditions. Through this common ground built upon mutual affirmation and dialogue, I feel much more equipped to continue build-ing bridges between my spiritual context and other religious tradi-tions.” St. Jacob Mission Interpreter Nancy Martin
