Month of the Seven Sorrows of Mary
Dear friends in the Lord:
One hundred years ago, Pope Benedict XV wished to give new impetus to the missionary call to proclaim the Gospel. To mark this occasion, Pope Francis has called for the whole Church to observe an Extraordinary Missionary Month in October, which is the World Mis-sion month. Our archdiocesan family joins our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the altar to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as missionaries. Our prayers and financial help, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith support the work of the Mission Church, its witness to Christ and service to the poor.
The theme for the Extraordinary Missionary Month is “Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World.” Pope Francis has indicated four dimensions or ways to prepare for and live out this month:
1. A personal encounter with Jesus Christ alive in His Church;
2. The witness of the Saints, the missionary Martyrs, and the Confessors of Faith;
3. Biblical, catechetical, spiritual, and theological formation regarding the mission to the world;
4. Missionary charity as a material support for the immense work of evangelization.
I echo the sentiment of our Holy Father, asking you to open your hearts as you connect the World Mission Sunday in every corner of the globe.
As I write to you today, I ask you to consider a sacrificial gift to the annual appeal for world missions. It will be collected on the weekend of October 19-20. Your generous support will help the Soci-ety for the Propagation of the Faith to continue to spread the good news to the growing faith communities of our day. May it generate within us a renewed awareness of the need to proclaim the gospel to all corners of the world.
With gratitude and prayerful best wishes, I am,
Faithfully in Christ,
+Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan
Archbishop of New York
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal ser-vice organization, founded in 1882 by Father McGivney in New Haven and named in honor of the navigator, Christopher Columbus. The K of C is
calling all Catholic men to join their brotherhood. Members from Haverstraw Council #581 will be on hand on today and on October 27 in the Narthex to recruit and answer any questions.
The Faithful Departed Remembered at St. Gregory’s—November 2 is All Soul’s Day, when we remember to pray for those who have died, and in fact, the entire month is dedicated to remembering the dead. A tradition here at St. Gregory’s, and at many parishes, is to display a photo of a Loved One who has died at Church. If there is some-one who had who is family member or friend, who has died in the last two years, please feel free to bring a framed photo, with a stand, and place it on the table that will be by the altar, next Sunday. These photos will be display for the month of November. One request however, please scotch tape a name and phone number on the back of the photo so at the end of November, if anyone forgets to pick up the picture, we can give you a call.
All Saints Day—November 1, is a Holy Day of Obliga-tion—The Mass schedule for Friday, November 1 is: Vigil Mass Thursday evening October 31st 5:30 PM and on Friday: 9:00, 12:10 and 7 PM.
