A little note for you…

Hi, here’s the St George’s Day Pack. I´ve had lots of fun creating this for you and I know

the kids will love these activities and games.

The pack is split into two sections “Activities and Games”. Underneath each heading you

will notice that it says who it is suitable for i.e. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers.

Take a look at all the activities and games because you may feel there are some activities

and/or games which may be suitable for your section.

PRINTING HELP

IMPORTANT - If you are not intending to print in colour make sure you set your printer

to greyscale (this can be found in the Print Dialog box).

Because the entire pack is in one document you will need to print specific pages for the

activity you want to do. To do this you need to type the number of the page you want

printed in your print dialog box.

Have fun

Samantha

An Overview Of St George’s Day For You & The Children…

Note to leader… If the children are new to St. George’s Day and the stories that

surround it true or mythical then it’s best for you to read this to them so that the

crafts and games have some meaning.

----------------------------------------------------

St George's Day is celebrated on the 23rd of April. Saint George is the Patron Saint of

England and also the Patron Saint of all Scouts around the world. He was born in

Turkey.

His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the

British flag. St George's emblem was adopted by Richard The Lion Heart and brought

to England in the 12th century.

The Legend of St George

St George was a brave Roman soldier who left the army to travel to the palace of the

Emperor, Diocletian, to plead with him to stop his cruel persecution of Christians. As

he rode on his horse through Sylene (in present-day Libya), he found that one of the

cities was plagued by an evil dragon that lurked in a swamp. This terrifying creature

could only be pacified by feeding it with human bodies, and every day one of the

citizens was chosen by drawing lots and was sacrificed.

The King's own daughter, Cleolinda, was going to be the victim on the day that

George arrived. He hurried to help her, even though his only weapon was a spear.

With awesome courage he charged on his horse, knowing that he had only one shot

at killing the fire-breathing dragon. He succeeded and saved the princess's life.

After talking to George, the grateful King, the princess, and many of the people

decided to become Christians. George continued to the Emperor's palace, but

Diocletian had him put to death on 23rd April AD303 for his Christian faith.

Baden Powell chose St George to be the movements Patron Saint because he had the

qualities that reflect good Scouting.

On St George’s Day a traditional custom is to fly the St George’s flag and wear a red

rose. The hymn ‘Jerusalem’ is also sung on or the nearest Sunday to that date, in

churches across the nation.

If you want to learn a little more about St. George and England play the win, lose draw

game at the end of this pack

Activity No. 1 – “Easy St. George Dragon”

Suitable for Beavers, Cubs & Scouts

Materials Needed

Thin card or very thick paper

Green paints

Directions

1. Print the dragon template on the following pages and cut it out. If you can put thin card

through your printer that would be great if not cut out a couple of dragons for the kids to draw round then cut out themselves

2. Using scissors cut slits along the lines of the dragon’s body one for the wings and two

smaller ones for the legs

3. Get the kids to decorate as they wish with paint, pencils, felts or a bit of both

4. Once the wings and legs are also painted fold them in half and push through the slots

5. If you have used card the dragon should stand up – you may need to make a tiny fold at the bottom of the feet

6. OR you can punch a hole in the top of the body to thread string to hang the dragon’s up

Activity No. 9 – “The London

Taxi”

Suitable for Cubs, Scouts & Explorers

One of the universally recognised British symbols is the

London Taxi.

This is a great craft for the kids and although fun for

Beavers the cutting and folding may be too difficult.

This craft requires patience and precision when cutting out the model. It’s not to be

rushed if you want a good result.

Materials Needed

Paper glue with a fine applicator

The taxi template found on the next page printing on thin card

Black paint and a little gold, and silver

Although this can be printed on paper if you want to colour in it’s best to use thin

card.

Directions

1. Print out the template onto thin card. If you can’t put this through your printer

you will have to cut out a template and the get the kids to draw round it

2. Carefully cut out the template

3. Make folds where it is indicated including the tabs

4. Take your time to apply glue to the tabs and stick them into position. Have a trial

run before you start adding the glue

5. Once the model is complete use a fine brush to gently paint your taxi, trying not to

paint over the lines which give it definition

Different green and black paints

Directions

1. Paint the peg in one green colour and let it dry

2. Paint a pattern on the peg in a different colour using the picture to help you and let dry

this may not be the same size as the peg you are using so you might need to draw your own or cut it to size

4. Glue the eye to the top at the clamp end

5. Get the children to design and draw their own dragons tongue onto red and yellow card or felt material cut out and glue on the bottom of the clamp end of the peg

Game No. 2 – “Bash St. George’s Castle”

Suitable for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers

This game is only suitable for a small group. And only possible if you have a large beam in your room or tree outside to hang rope. The principle of the game is to put a football in a net and tie rope to it, then hang the rope over the tree branch. Then place large plastic bottles weighed down with sand or small stones on the floor in a square shape pretending these are the castle walls. The children are the dragon and have to pull the rope back to let the ball swing to try to knock down the walls to St. George’s castle

Materials Needed

You need at least five plastic bottles filled at the bottom with sand to weigh down. These will be the corners of the castle and the one in the middle. If you have more place them between the corners

1 Football a net to put the ball into

A rope long enough to tie the ball to and hang over the tree

branch

Directions

1. Explain that this is St. George’s castle and you are the dragon trying to knock down the

walls to get to St. George

2. Get all the children to stand in a queue and each have a go at swinging the ball to try to

knock down the walls to the castle

3. The child who knocks the most down wins a prize

©www.easierscouting.com | Game No. 3 – “Slay the Dragon Pinata” 37

Game No. 3 – “Slay the Dragon

Pinata”

Suitable for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers

Materials Needed

Buy a big piñata - do some fundraising or something for

this because it’s well worth it – Make sure that the piñata that you buy can be hung from something and it’s a sturdy one (ask the seller)

I’ve seen some on some Ebay and the above is from Amazon.co.uk for £14

A big stick

Lots of sweets, small chocolates to fill it. If it’s for Beavers

and Cubs you can add some cheap small toys

Instructions

1. I was lucky when I did this because we had a huge beam to hang it from so this may not be suitable for your building - Anyway you need to hang it from somewhere quite sturdy you could always hang it from a tree

2. Get all the children to sit around the piñata but for safety reasons make sure they are

well away from it

3. Get the first child to bash the piñata with a stick only once again make sure the other children are well back and stay back

4. You can make this more difficult for Scouts by blindfolding them

5. Then get the second child and so on to bash it working your way around the circle

6. If you buy a strong one it should take quite a while until the sweets finally drop out which will build the anticipation and fun

7. Once the candy drops everyone can run to the middle and claim them

Game No. 4 – “Quoits”

Quoits was a game that was played in ancient times.

Suitable for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers

Materials Needed

A pole put into the ground one for each team of six

Three rings per team you can buy rubber rings from amazon for about £3.50 for four or you may be able to get them from a pet shop

How to Play

1. Mention to the children that this game was played by St. George in ancient times

2. Split your group into teams of six depending on your group size these can be smaller

3. The children are going to toss the ring onto the pole. Depending on which section you are will depend on how far away the children are from the pole. So use one of the your kids to do a little test before you start

4. The first child in each team toss their three rings into the pole

5. The leader adds up how many each child managed to toss onto the pole

6. Now the next child in each team has their turn once everyone has had a go the leader

will add up the total amount of points for each team and declare the winner

7. Play again if they are enjoying it

Game No. 6 – “Catch the Dragon’s Tail”

Suitable for Beavers, Cub, Scouts & Explorers

This is an old one but I thought I would add it in case you’ve never

played it before. It’s probably better to play this outside.

How to Play

1. Get all the children to stand in a line behind each other with their hands on one another’s shoulders.

2. The first person in line is the head of the dragon, and the last is the tail

3. The head tries to catch the tail by manoeuvring the line around so that she/he can tag the end player. The line

must not break

4. All the other players do their best to keep the head from catching the dragon’s tail

5. When the head catches the tail, the end player moves up to become the new head, all other players move backward one position and the player who was in front as the head now becomes the tail

Note: If you have a large group it may be best to split it into more than one Dragon

Preparation

1. Print & cut the Win, Lose, Draw Cards found on the following pages

6. If they still can’t answer then the other team gets a chance to answer for ½ a point

7. Now the leader gives the first child in the second team a card

8. When you get back to the first group you give the card to the second child and so on…
